Apparently when Mac first joined the MIAC they were worried about the competition for their football team so they had a clause built into their membership contract allowing for football to leave and their other sports to remain.  Kudos to them, it seems to have worked out well so far: one conference championship that they never would've gotten if they were still in the MIAC.
They must be smarter at Macalester, heck of a clause to put into their MIAC contract.

Yeah, that's pretty damned smart, betting on your own failure.

On the topic of St. Thomas, athletic dominance, and enrollment figures, I've been doing some research into what actually constitutes as a competitive advantage in D3FB. Here's a plot of relative 2015 enrollment figures for every football-playing D3 school versus their average rating in my system over the last 16 seasons. Compared to cost of attendance, acceptance rate, graduation rate, and pretty much every other quantitative stat you can find on D3 schools, enrollment has by far the strongest correlation to on-field success.

D3 is not D1; size does matter, but it's not as simple as "going into the cafeteria and finding the best football players." Cherry-picking UW-Eau Claire's (recent) or other large schools competitive struggles as anecdotes for why it doesn't matter isn't a fair argument (commenters on the Star Tribune article may not be as informed as posters here).
Interesting matrix.
Here's the only matrix that makes any sense to me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKWmFWRVLlU

Actually, if they were betting on failure, they would have kept the football team out in the first place.  I'd say it was pretty smart to leave an out in the likelihood that their obstacles to football success proved insurmountable.

"Smart to leave out football in the likelihood that obstacles prove insurmountable" is merely using more syllables when saying "betting on failure."

What MAC did was ethically no different than an NBA team tanking games to get the number one draft choice. The NBA introduced the lottery because of that base motive.

Now, now, don't pull a JT and misquote me! ;D

If they had left football out when they first joined, they would have bet on failure.  Since they initially joined with football, but left AN out just in case, they tried, but failed, to be competitive.  NO relationship whatsoever to tanking games to get the #1 pick, since A) there is no draft in college recruiting, and B) losing did not automatically relegate them to a less competitive conference (to mix metaphors of NBA and soccer :D).  I'll assume they TRIED to be competitive (perhaps not hard enough), but they failed.  I doubt they TRIED to fail.

Not sure if this was already posted, but the QB battle for UST just got a little more interesting.

Southern Mississippi QB Gabe Green is transferring to UST next fall. Green seems like quite the athlete. Rivals lists him as a 2-Star QB. In 2014, Green was Named the Gatorade Player of the Year for Illinois.

National Champion! SJU's Bugler Wins Division III Steeplechase Title

Way to go Ryan!
According to the article that Oz attached, Bulger is what is referred to as a "dark horse" in Steeplechase lingo, broke out from the middle of the pack with two laps to go and sprinted to a fairly comfortable victory.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Coming from a school called American Heritage Academy you think he might have a decent haircut and have learned to tuck his shirt in.    ;D
