My son is going to St. Thomas this fall. Does anyone know how many JV games they usually play? Someone told me 3 but that doesn't sound like enough to develop young talent. Jim

Minnesota guy. My son played for Delano. It will be interesting to see how he transitions this fall after being the MAN on his high school team to being just "average" among a whole team of men. He has always pushed himself to stand out in the past and it will be exiting to see what he can do with college coaching and training. Jim

Welcome Jim, and good luck to your son at UST!

My info on JV games is probably over a year old at this point, but I don't think they'll have more than one or two planned, if any.  I know in '14 they had a JV game planned w/ Bethel but it was cancelled, and that was the only one on the schedule.  What UST will do is have live scrimmages on Fridays after the main practice, for the frosh/soph guys.  These are essentially JV games and with such a huge roster size, they're quite competitive and spirited.  As I recall they have about 5-7 of these over the course of the season.

Welcome! Don't forget about the opportunities for overseas play while touring Italy, Germany, Canada, etc. You'll find these F.A.M.I.L.Y. vacations generate plenty of discussion and, for those of a certain persuasion, ire on this board.

Ahh.... The Wright County Conference, the toughest 3A/4A football conference  in the state of Minnesota. Funny thing, Delano,Annandale,Rockford & Dassel-Cokato are the only schools from Wright county remaining. As the county exploded in the 94 corridor enrollments in Monticello & STMA out grew the 3A/4A size limits. Glencoe-Silver Lake, Hutchinson, New London-Spicer, Orono are nice pick ups but there something about days gone by when Monticello and STMA were on the schedule or the rivalry games like Dassel-Cokato vs Howard Lake-Waverley-Winsted.

STMA will be in the big school district in 2017, right up there with Eden Prairie, Wayzata, Maple Grove, CDH and all the big boys. They are ready, I have attended the Rogers/STMA game for many years and watched as both programs have evolved. STMA has a slightly larger enrollment but Rogers is not far behind and I assume it will grow to a similar size. Rogers has been named the fastest growing community in MN so it's right around the corner. I know Delano has produced some good players. I have not watched them play but you see many kids move on to play in college. The Auggies have one coming in this year as well. Nate Triplett was a Delano product and played for the Gophers,  I am sure Section 105 saw him on the grid iron back in his day. Who was that other Delano guy that played for Brewster a few years ago? I saw him run back an interception at TCF but I can't recall his name.

Welcome Jim.  Congrats to you and your son.

It was an entertaining game at Port Adelaide for Hawthorn (particularly since the Hawks won).  The Port Adelaide crowd is very into every game and always bring a great atmosphere. Doubly so when it is a hard scrap like last night's affair. There were a number of Hawthorn villains getting resounding boos every time the got near the ball.

It was also full of great plays like this mark.

Because of the changes in the rural economies, the farm towns that were once the centerpiece of the Wright County Conference have either exploded as with Monticello or STMA or have dwindled as with Howard Lake-Waverley-Winsted (even with Winsted added they can not compete numbers wise). Maple Lake & Kimball also used to be part of the WCC. The core of the original schools like Delano,Annandale,Dassel-Cokato and Rockford have agriculture, light manufacturing and are close enough to the western suburbs that commuting to a higher play job is feasible. However, now with the expansion of conference schools all the teams must travel an excessive number of miles to play schools with similar enrollment. Example New London-Spicer (Kandiyohi county) can play New Prague (which straddles the county line of Scott and Le Sueur counties) which according to Google Maps is 2 hours 15 minutes and 141 miles for a conference game.

Maple Lake,Kimball and Howard Lake-Waverley-Winsted are now part of The Centrl Minnesota Conference and mostly compete in Class 1A with the like of St. John's Prep,Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa and Paynesville.

The times, they are a changin' ;)

So, incoming freshmen are you attending captains practices and if so how do you like it?  My son has attended one so far (will probably go this Sunday) at Gustavus and got a good workout in with his fellow defensive linemen.  It's nice to start hitting people again.  All told there were probably 10-12 incoming freshman there

It's pretty much us old guys here. "Has beens or never was" so to say. Unwritten rule by the propriter of this site,Pat Coleman, no active players posting. It's a good rule in my opinion and most coaching staffs have similar rules regarding social media sites.

BTW, football is just a small part of what we discuss,if you haven't noticed. We particularly like beer, fishing, hunting (guns & ammo) and rodeo bucking bulls  ;)
