Well, it must be getting close to fall camp.  A couple boxes of GAC swag for my son (some for mom and dad too) arrived at the house today.  Mom says it looks like the house is being invaded by bumble bees.

That's what $40K+ per annum gets you nowadays: learning, living, and lots of swag...

$40K?  Who pays that?  And the swag isn't paid by the school (this isn't D1-FBS).

Last year the average tuition + fees at Gustavus rose to just over $42K. As for swag, when my siblings went to Gustavus they were handed free Gustie t-shirts, banners, key chains, school supplies, etc. at college events all of the time. I had a similar experience at UST, but we were also given a bottle of port from the university cellars upon arrival. ;) Maybe things have changed...
Actually, cost of attendance is over $50K ($53K at UST, $54K at Gustavus) at the MIAC schools.  Most family's don't pay anywhere near that though.  After grants and scholarships my son's GAC bill is less than the U of M would be.  As for swag, I was talking about football team swag (practice shorts, practice shirts, cleats, traveling fleece pants and jackets, etc), not the junkets you normally receive - we have lots and lots of that stuff from a bunch of D1, D2, and D3 schools (Sewanee football T-shirt anyone).  The MIAC shirts will be great to drape over a tire for doing Macebell drills.
Maybe things have changed, but that's somewhat surprising to me that you had to pay for all of the football team swag.  Did you at least get a pretty good discount?

I'm seeing people walking around town doing this all the time now.

I had a good chuckle on this one and showed it to the other half.  She and her friends had been all over this pic already.  Sigh.  I'm so yesterday.

Pretty good.  The required "player pack" was very inexpensive, the other items were a good discount, the grass cleats he got (for the few odd places that still have grass) we're an exceptional deal.  It's just that Under Armour tends to be rather pricey even if you get a good discount on it.  I'm not surprised though, budgets for D3 football are going to be significantly less that a D1-FBS Power 5 conference team.  I remember being at a D1-FBS big man camp a few years ago and one of the "campers" (high school kid) was doing the pro-agility shuttle and the sole plate of one of his Nike's sheared off.  Something duct tape isn't really going to fix.  Well, the kid was rather devastated. No problem though, the trainer takes a look and asks the kid what size shoes he wears then he has an assistant go to the equipment room and gives the kid a new pair to use.  At the end of the camp I see the kid wanting to return them and the trainer says their yours we can't use the since their used.  Now, that's a budget.

So does the required "player pack" include a Gustie chastity ring and an invite to appear on The Bachelorette for when the whole football thing doesn't work out?

sowilson, let me translate for The Rev. If it wasn't true, it's would be a really great folk tail...but it's frickin' true.

The guy actually has his own Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryan_Hoag

Read the part about being on The Bachelorette

The Wikipedia page doesn't tell is all the trash talk Hoag used to do on the field, only to get past a CB and drop certain TD passes. Again, I remind you, if it wasn't all true it would be a heck of a folk tail. :D
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Does this Hoag guy play now?  no.  Is he relevant? No.  So what does he have to do with anything? Nothing.  Sorry, but I don't give a crap about 15 year old inside jokes.  I'm much more interested in what's happening now or the recent past.

One of just a few D-III players drafted at least makes him fodder for conversation, whether he was relevant or Mr. Irrelevant.

So with your interest in what's happening at Gustavus nowadays, what are their prospects for the season? I'm thinking the MIAC is going to look something like this at the end of the season:

1. St. Thomas
2. St. Johns
3-4. Bethel, Concordia
5-6. Augsburg, Gustavus
7-9. Hamline, St. Olaf, Carleton

My projected 2016 MIAC finish (without considerations for returning starters, that'll come after Kickoff comes out):

TeamWins   Losses
St. Thomas7.60.4
St. John's6.51.5
Bethel5.12.9
Concordia-Moorhead   4.83.2
Gustavus Adulphus4.33.7
Augsburg3.64.4
St. Olaf1.76.3
Hamline1.66.4
Carelton0.97.1

I would say this fits Reverend MIAC's view of things a little better than Art76's

Hey, show a little love! Carleton returns a lot (from an admittedly abysmal team). My optimistic projections have them beating Hamline, Augsburg, and Olaf. Honestly, does anyone know how Augsburg will fare this year? Several key cogs are gone

Those projected finishes will jump around quite a bit once I can input my returning starter info. I would like to be able to weight a starter by the importance of their position too, which would help account for the impact of an Ayrton Scott leaving, but Kickoff only displays so much information.

I think Art76's list is a fair reflection of where things are likely headed.  St. Olaf and Carleton don't have the roster size to move out of the basement although St. Olaf seems to be trying a bit harder than Carleton.  Coaches at those schools have to play players who aren't really deserving of playing time.  I believe that St. John's might be ripe for coming in third at the hands of Bethel, Concordia, or Gustavus, if not this year then over the next two years.

The key to any of these teams moving up is their success at recruiting.  Has anyone done an analysis of the last two recruiting year classes?  I have some thoughts on a couple of the schools 2016 recruiting class but since not all of them have announced I'll leave that for another day.

Augsburg is an interesting case.  I'm not a fan of the offensive scheme employed by Augsburg as they really can't grind out yards on the ground when needed and that keeps their defense on the field too long - with predictable results.  One interesting point with Augsburg is their new S&C coach.  He's from the UofM, studied under Dietz, and understands Triphasic Training.  Looking at his summer workouts he's done an excellent job incorporating the triphasic approach into his summer football workouts.  If his approach works for the Augsburg football team they could be very tough team to handle.  It will probably take a couple of years to find out though.
