I will see how it goes, I might end up on the dark side of the F.A.M.I.L.Y. Kind of funny, I ask the boy if he wants to eat at the local restaurant last weekend after church and he declined because he wants to eat better so he doesn't get "jiggly". I am not sure if he decided that after looking at me or in the mirror. Jim

One thing that may have actually effected his choice was coach Fasching asked him what position he wanted to play to which my son said defensive line. Coach Fasching then said he thought my son would do well on the offensive line as well. While my son would be happy to play wherever needed, he prefers defense and may have been concerned he would be switched to O-line at some point at St. Johns.
Sounds like the recent discussion my son had with coach Fasching too.  My son doesn't mind playing o-line as long as it's predominately running, pass blocking is his least favorite activity.  So, he's going to Gustavus this fall to be a NG and is currently enjoying the weekly captains practices and getting a chance to meet his teammates.  Good luck to your son - we'll see him soon.

Kudos to Gary for being upfront and honest. Hope that kind of approach continues to win him favor with players he recruits and their coaches and families.

Agreed.  I don't think St. John's moves players around more than other schools so I give Fasching credit for at least letting it be known it's a possibility.

A lot goes into what position a kid will play in college vs. high school.  Bodies grow through the college years, and teams have needs at different positions, are two things that have a direct impact on where a kid might play.  Even though it's D3, most of guys getting the playing time on the MIAC teams were key players on their high school teams, which isn't necessarily the case in college.

The coaches at St. Johns were very good to us. They talked to him about his first year development timeline, but I assume they do that with all prospects not knowing who will mature and work out. The second thing that may have pushed him to St. Thomas is he doesn't have to deal with pressure to wrestle. While the St. John's wrestling coach said there wouldn't be any pressure to wrestle, an alumni assured him it would be brought up from time to time. He likes wrestling, loves football and understands he is there to get ready for his future.

LOL.  I dealt with that, but the wrestling coach at the time was also a football coach.  :o  In the end, I couldn't handle a daily football practice and wrestling practice from October - December.

I am starting to think my son joined the dark side by choosing St. Thomas after reading the last few pages of posts ;D.  The coaching staff at St. Johns never mentioned the "smokefest cookouts" which may have swayed my son as he is keenly aware that there is a Chipotle near the St. Thomas campus and none near St. Johns. Johns. That may happen at St. Thomas as well, who knows. He will first have to bust his buns just to get time on the practice squad this year. It will be a fun year seeing the different campuses the next four years. By the way, St. Thomas is not the only team to receive quality transfers this year as I believe St. Johns got a nice addition to their O-line.

My daughter is going to be high school junior this year and we are starting the college tours.  Right at the top of her list is if there is a Chipotle and a Starbucks near campus.  Also on the short list is laundry, tuck in and ass wiping services. How on earth did college students ever survive without such conveniences?

For me it was somewhere to keep a homemade keg fridge:

For my girls?  Likely access to superfood cafes and yogurt bars. Disgraceful.

Edit: As an aside, I don't know about you but I hardly recognise the priorities my girls set for themselves. Maybe it's something to do with gender, nationality and city v country, but they have interests that are much more demanding than anything I ever considered. I feel old.

Yea, spring was a couple months ago mate. Being in the wrong hemisphere will do that to a guy.... ;)

No, fall workouts have not yet officially begun.

I don't remember if it said it was the first practice or not, but the SC Times had a story the other day about the annual football kickoff luncheon, Friday Aug. 19, and invited people to attend the Johnnie practice after the event.
