Here's an interesting story. Something tells me the MIAC doesn't win many cross-admit battles with the Ivy League. That being said, UST is still aspiring for "Boston College of the Upper Midwest" status so this is a step in the right direction.  ;)

Back when I was a UST admissions tour guide, they told us to tell students on tour that St. Thomas was like the "Notre Dame of the North..." which I never did because it was so stupid on so many levels.  Like, for one, Notre Dame is already in the north.  Two, really? Three, REALLY??

+K  It always makes me laugh when schools confuse their aspirations with reality.  I suspect it is a common problem with college administrators.

Erdmann back to practicing, Alvord will get the start on Saturday:

* "Fasching also said the team has not yet found an opponent to fill the date it has open in week two of its schedule next season."

This is troubling...either MAC needs to get back to playing football in the conference or we need to recruit another team like St. Scholastica.  Sure SJU could fly a team in from out of state but that would be costly.

Sorry for the intrusion, but Whew!  What an AFL trade period.  Hang on Hawthorn fans for a massive in-flight reload of young talent.

OUT: Sam Mitchell (34, 5x Hawthorn MVP, 3x All-Australian, 4x Premiership player, 1x Premiership captain, 2003 rookie of the year)
Jordan Lewis (30, 1x Hawthorn MVP, 1x All-Australian, 4x Premiership player, 2005 rookie of the year nominee)
Brad Hill (24, 3x Premiership player, 2013 rookie of the year nominee, wanted a trade to Fremantle to play with his brother)

IN:   Jaeger O'Meara (22 from Gold Coast, #1 pick 2011, 2013 rookie of the year, 2014 Coaches Association Best Young Player)
Tom Mitchell (23 from Sydney, #21 pick 2011, 1x premiership player (loss), 2013 rookie of the year nominee, top fantasy points in 2016 grand final)
Tyrone Vickery (26 from Richmond, #8 pick 2008)

What an amazingly ambitious effort by the Hawthorn football department.  Back in the hunt, baby!

(I should mention that the Hawks' first pick is now round five this year and round two next year.  There was some hefty pick delivery to make these trades happen, but we didn't lose any young talent (other than Hill who asked out for non-club related reasons).  A good year.)

I know UW - Oshkosh is looking for a game.  There's a way to open up.

retagent

UWO doesn't need a second loss on their record.

Disagree. SoS is a part of the formula. Adding a team to the MIAC moves the entire leagues SoS closer to .500. The extra non-con games have scheduling hurdles, but they also allow playoff caliber teams to schedule strategically to boost their playoff resume.

I believe the UMAC is keeping the 9 game conference schedule between weeks 2 and 10 for the foreseeable future, so weeks 1 and 11 are the only open dates.

With the way Alvord has been playing, I think giving him the start is a good decision, but I really hope that Erdmann will get a few series in, too, to shake the rust off before crunch time.

The SoS methodology for DIII needs to be revisited. Its messy and doesn't correlate with some of the well respected computer polls out there.

I can't imagine any scenario where a 1 loss MIAC doesn't make the playoff field. I know it's been discussed on the boards in the past but I just don't see it. As a result I don't think it matters whether we're a 10 team league playing 9 games or a 9 team league playing 8. I would recommend avoiding a non conference game that you could potentially lose in the event you do slip up in the conference schedule because a two loss teams stands only a small chance of getting in.

Augsburg, Carleton, and even Bethel this year really aren't good tests to see what is behind Erdmann.  Opportunities have been missed to get Miedkte some more experience.  If Erdmann is going to be injury prone it would be beneficial to have another guy with experience waiting in the wings.  Obviously the coaches see more in practice and they don't consult me on their strategies, but depending on Erdmann's status going forward the Johnnies might be light at QB going up to Concordia and potentially a playoff run.
