Well, the Vikings have predictably reverted to form. Sooner than I expected, I should admit.

In some ways, isn't this a lot better than a late playoff meltdown??

In all seriousness though, Spielman has been doing some voodoo with that roster. It just finally caught up with them. This is a very good team, if they had an intact offensive line.

With all the play-off chatter going on here (said tongue in cheek) I thought I'd post the current SOS rankings from the NCAA for all 9 teams in the MIAC:

25. .584 Bethel
45. .560 Carleton
73. .530 Augsburg
93. .517 St. Thomas
123. .499 Concordia
139 .490 Hamline
144. .488 Gustavus
146. .488 St. John's
233. .383 St. Olaf

Bethel's SOS score will take a hit as they play Augsburg and Hamline to close out the season, but I suspect they'll still have the highest SOS at the end of the season because they played Dubuque (7 - 2)  and Carthage (6 – 2) in non-conference contests at the beginning of the year.

MIAC fans might be chewing their nails when it comes to selection Sunday for a Pool C bid. That's because Concordia plays St. Olaf this week which will make their SOS number go down and then St. John's plays Hamline, which isn't really going to help their numbers much this week. It looks like next week, provided both of these teams win, they'll have just about identical SOS scores going into that final game against one another.

From a statistical standpoint, it definitely is going to be a Pool C knockout game. St. John's has a little bit better resume, as they have no losses except to St. Thomas. If Concordia wins that final game, then both they and the Johnnies will have identical loss totals with almost statistically identical SOS scores.

Finally, I think if Concordia-Moorhead can be Regionally ranked later this afternoon, or next week, they stand a better chance of getting in as a Pool C team. If they don't, then it might be that if Concordia wins in week 11, then they knock both St. John's and themselves out of the post season. I am not advocating that the Cobbers should just give up, because they don't stand a chance of getting into Pool C with that loss to Jamestown at the beginning of the season, but if they get in, they might be the last team picked.

I am not a very avid D3 football fan, but I follow it a bit. In basketball they only count the d3 games in their SOS and have a d3 record, d3 SOS and d3 regional record. Does this apply to football as well when determining pool C teams? I ask because if so the Jamestown loss shouldn't hurt Concordia that much. Thanks in advance for the input!

In the calculation of SOS, only the Division III games matter. The primary criteria for at-large selection considers every DIII game played, and only DIII games played. But because football only has 9 or 10 games, the secondary criteria--games versus non-DIII opponents--are probably given more weight than in other sports.

Augsburg is the stud team in the MIAC, the West, and probably the country, having played four Regionally Ranked Opponents. Oof.
