FYI - Defensive Coordinator position open at Bethel:

https://www.bethel.edu/employment/openings/postings/2017/february/assistant-coach-defense-coordinator?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Daily%20Staff%20Openings&utm_content=Daily%20Staff%20Openings+CID_8b9e7bf20bf2b85e4af939aa86316fe2&utm_source=Carlyle%20Delivers&utm_term=Assistant%20Coach%20%20Defense%20Coordinator
The Bethel defense slipped the last year or two from where they had been, but I wasn't expecting this (but I don't know any of the details either).  What is interesting is that Steve Johnson's brother (Mike) was added to the defensive staff last year after years of being a defensive coordinator in high school, most recently at Osseo.  I wonder if this has been in the works for awhile.

I very, very, very  much doubt this was anything to do with the performance of the team.  BU doesn't really roll that way, and the coaches are a tightly knit group.  Wouldn't shock me if Mike Frageau (currently listed as defensive coordinator) or Jimmy Miller (currently listed as associate head coach) either is retiring from coaching, or moving on to do something else, and their departure has created a vacancy.

I sort of wonder how long Coach J will stick around...I feel like Scotty Kirchoff being on staff is the succession plan.  All just my theories - haven't heard anything.

I'd bet that Hazz would know about the current opening.

Did retirement create the opening Art?

105,

Unknown to me, but I kind of doubt it. Both Mike and Jimmy were a couple of years behind me and I'm not retiring anytime soon. I suspect someone got a nod to coach somewhere else which created the opening. I'm sure more will be shared as things unfold.

I didn't mean to infer that this move was recent performance based.  I'm actually wondering if the succession plan has been in place to accommodate a retirement or career change by someone on staff.  From an outsider looking in, it appears that Coach Johnson runs a top notch program and doesn't make short term quick decisions.  Interesting to follow nonetheless.

Sure - but maybe retiring from coaching?  They both have jobs outside of being assistant coaches at BU...Miller teaches phy ed, and I think Frageau is a teacher at a local HS?

No clue. He left sometime in 2016.  It looks like Stuart Borne took over after he left.

I read A Legacy Unrivaled:  The Story of John Gagliardi this weekend.  As a former player of John's, it refreshed some wonderful memories.  It's a unique view at John's philosophy.  It's a quick read, and I'd definitely recommend it to any Johnnie fans.  Heck, it'd be a good read for anyone.  For you Tommies, perhaps you can find someone to read it to you.  :P

Indeed, just stepping away from coaching - still working at BU.

That's okay. I will keep a copy in my bathroom however, but not to read.

I was given this book by a friend, and it's even got a note in it to me from the author, who is a friend of my friend. As a non Johnnie it was a good read for sure.
