Yeah, Presentation is a program that was entering D-III for about two years earlier this decade and then backed out. They had been a member of the UMAC. Pretty geographically isolated and small -- when they decided to go back to the NAIA I didn't complain. Not a great fit in D-III. Probably needs the 24 football scholarships split over 80-whatever kids to prop up enrollment.

Presentation opens with Lawrence on Sept. 2. Last year they played two D-III opponents, beating Lawrence 17-10 and Finlandia 74-0. Not a challenge for SJU, but it's a game.

Better than Buena Vista?

For those unfamiliar with the Johnnies' week two opponent from Aberdeen, S.D., Presentation College has an enrollment of about 800, which would put it in the lower 1/3 of UMAC schools by size.
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright.

HansenRatings

Context for Presentation from their two years in D3:

Their rating on Atomic Football, which was the only computer rating site to have better predictions than my model over the latter half of the season, would put them on par with Redlands & St. Norbert. With that being said, the last few teams transitioning from NAIA to D3 have underperformed in my model.

I'd say no. But BVU has a new coach and so they'll be harder to predict next year. But being on par with Lawrence suggests they won't be on par with BVU.

Mr.MIAC

I was unaware of Presentation College, but on paper it looks like a good fit for SJU. UST has academically and athletically outgrown SJU over the past couple of decades. I'm sure the Johnnies have been looking for a new rival to fill the void. Presentation College is small, rural, and Catholic. They appear to be very "flexible" on academic requirements. In short, aside from being coed, the place looks like an SJU clone...a perfect candidate to build a new rivalry.

On the bright side, there will be beer at the pre-game festivities  :-\

OzJohnnie

It's like playing Crown which we did for years, including in 2003 if I recall correctly.  A tune-up game (hopefully).  Fits the pattern we've run for a long, long time.

EDIT:  Correctly recalled.  http://www.gojohnnies.com/schedule.aspx?schedule=28&mobile=skip

We had Oz's hockey team win the state championship and now we have my hometown team playing Pat Coleman's alma mater in the Class 3A boys basketball championship. I predict the Packers will crush the Islanders and send them home with a complimentary can of SPAM.

DLS, Minneahaha Academy and Minneapolis North should be ashamed of themselves.  Move up a class already!!!
