I feel like I addressed that in a previous post, but yes, I could be mistaken -- this was out of a conversation from seven or eight years ago with someone I felt should be knowledgeable.

As I go through the record book, I see De played for the AA state title in 2003 and the AAA state title in 2005, but schools also grow over time.

Where I live in St. Paul most people looking for a Catholic high school typically check out CDH, STA and Vis.  Lately I've heard from a number of people in my area raving about DLS.

I should start by saying I have no ties to DLS. Usually with a program that has become a basketball power as a private school, they will have created many enemies along the way. However, I haven't met a person that has said a negative thing about Dave Thorson. Don't know him personally, but every person in the basketball community or otherwise gushes over how great of a leader he is. I have always been impressed by that.

I've never met him but from watching him coach I think he's a nut.  I was at the CDH/DLS game this year and if I were still a ref would have T'd him up at least once, maybe twice.  Anybody on the court as much as him should be wearing a jersey and shorts and have their name in the scorebook.

In the mail today we received letter from SJU Football office with our season ticket renewal.
Looking over at the Presentation College Saints website, their game at SJU will be the largest crowd they will play in front of all year.

As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Judging from national attendance figures, isn't that true of nearly EVERY team playing AT SJU? ;)

The whole family (except for #1 who has a party... #sadface) is going to the G tonight for the opening match against the returning drug cheats of Essendon, back from their doping ban. Also returning is the freshly minted captain of Hawthorn, Jarryd Roughead, who returns after successful immunotherapy treatment of stage 4 melanoma and complete remission - no sogn of the disease.

Go Hawks!

And how did that game turn out Oz?
Everyday is payday in paradise.

Yes.  Yes, it is.

I thought by not posting the result it was pretty obvious... :(  Beaten 116 - 91.

Our kicking for goal was poor (33% accuracy), our skills were poor (75% disposal efficiency against an expectation of the low 80's) leading to far too many broken plays and turnovers, and we got caught out of position defensively with regularity as it seemed were were over-committed to offensive play (which would have paid off, I suppose, if we had kicked for goal with more accuracy).

We've got a who new "engine room" in the midfield so it can take a couple games to settle.  We'll see how we go against Adelaide this Saturday afternoon.  If goal kicking accuracy picks up then that will have a ripple effect through the whole side as teams are pushed to keep up with our shooting match (Hawthorn has arguably the most dangerous and potent forward line).  And we'll see how a week of practice and tweaking on defensive structures go toward addressing the regularity with which we got caught out of position.

Go team.

This latest move of the Raiders to Las Vegas reminds me why I am done with the NFL. Have been done for several years. Give me a Gopher game or Augsburg game any day.

I agree. Too much product, too little spirit.

Today I was speaking with a member of the officiating crew of Super Bowl LI (51 for any Tommies reading this with their lips moving ;)) and the Raiders/Vegas move came up. He had officiated a game in Oakland this past season & is in tune with exactly how much support the Raiders have in California. Then I had to ask the obvious question; "is a new stadium the main reason for the move to Vegas?" his response, "that's the ONLY reason".

They will need it to clean up the mess in Oakland for the next two years.

To be fair, the Oakland coliseum is a pretty terrible stadium in need of major upgrades.  But the mayor of Oakland offered a deal to keep the Raiders there and the ginger hammer basically laughed it out of the room.
The NFL lost me after the Ray Rice situation.  I still play in a fantasy league with my family, but I really only watch the Super Bowl.  Next year I probably won't even do that

Piling on, I know - but I haven't followed the NFL in any real kind of way since back in the 80's when Joe Montana was rocking in SF. College ball is just so much more "seat of the pants" play, where there seems to consistently be unorthodox plays and situations that make the observer say, "would you look at that?" The NFL just seems to me, to be too predictable because it is primarily about showmanship instead of desire or the love of playing. It's not really surprising if you pause to think about it, as most consumers just want to "hang with the best" as determined by the socialites responsible for that area of life. Many folks can't live without the latest iPhone, or BMW or whatever it is you want to throw into this column. The NFL just gives the sports junkies/socialites what they want. Those of us that have played at the college level as non-scholarship players often look at the game in a different light.

I was going to ask what the heck a "ginger hammer" was but then I googled it and the Urban Dictionary of the term has me retracting my question.  :-[
