In the battle of something's got to give the UST defense has given up 6 TOTAL RUSHING YARDS in 3 conference games. Auggie ended up with -27 yards and that is with a fairly mobile QB and a RB that can scoot too. Meanwhile the Cobbers are averaging rolling up 275 rushing yards a game (80% of their total offense).

The Cobbers will need to find a way to get a little more multi-dimensional by springing a big pass play and converting on a turnover or a special teams play.

The Tommies need to stop fumbling punts and having ill timed penalties, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

My kids have been inquiring about the post-game bouncy houses on the tundra all season.

We had a guest priest for mass yesterday.  He started with something along the lines of:  It's a glorious day, especially considering that 37K people got to see the Tommies beat the Johnnies last Saturday.  ::)

Turns out that he teaches at U$T.  I turned my ears off after that.  ;D

Was it Steve McMichael? Franciscan? Talked about Italy a lot? Late 50s, reddish-gray beard?

If not, those guys are sharing a playbook. We have that guy, too.

Yep, that's the guy.  We've had him before, and I am pretty sure he made U$T references that time, too.

It must be difficult going through life with signs of your archrival popping up in so many prominent ways. How do you cope?

I can see how UST's football competence would be very difficult to accept. The football field used to be the only place that SJU had an edge. Now, not only are their bosses UST grads but they have to hear it on Saturday AND Sunday too. Tough life.

I'm kind of glad someone else gets to hear that shtick. I thought it was just us. :)

I'm bringing my in-laws to their first SJU game. Trying to decide if we come early and tailgate or stick around after. My 2.5 year old will be with so we'll only be able to do one.

Joking aside, does anyone know why SJU/CSB doesn't show up in the Department of Education's Equity in Athletics database? Data on the other MIAC schools are there, but SJU/CSB isn't even listed.

Yes -- it's because they aren't required to, as non co-ed institutions. They are separate institutions for purposes of that report.

Also, schools which don't accept federal financial aid money are not required to report out, but I only know of one of those in D-III (Grove City).

That's interesting. So is this sort of data on SJU/CSB published elsewhere? I'm doing a little research on the MIAC.

Tough call.  My kids don't do well at the tailgate (except they had a blast playing on Gagliardi Field this weekend), so it post-game activities for us.

WOW! I wake up this morning and see where we are deciding who is in the playoffs after week 5  :o
The Cobbers will have an opportunity to chime in on the conversation this week. It will get very interesting pending the result of the Cobbers vs. UST; definitely the game of the week in the MIAC

Looking at the stats, Concordia doesn't pass the ball very much, and in fact yesterday, they only had 31 yards of passing against Gustavus.  The Tommies have given up a total of 191 rushing yards, and -27 over the past two games.  It will be a long day if Concordia cannot get their running game going.  But these are just stats and the game is played on the field.

Should be an interesting game. It's looking like Concordia will be without their starting QB, after he went down with an ankle injury in the third quarter against Gustavus. Concordia used a freshman QB the rest of the way. Not to knock him, but it's hard to win in the MIAC with a freshman starting at QB. If he's the guy the rest of the way, Concordia's run game might not be quite as effective.  I'm thinking UST will focus their attention on Chad Johnson, who is having a great year.

After getting out-coached last year, I'm hoping UST comes in a little better prepared. Especially against the hook and ladder...

If the Cobbers don't have Herzog at QB, it shouldn't hurt them in the slightest. If you look at his numbers on the season, 29-59, for 379 and 2 tds in 4 games, they won't miss that "production". Also if you look at his rushing numbers, 47 carries for 162, 40 yards per game. New QB is 6'4 230, so he is more than capable of shouldering the load. Cobbers are going to get some rushing yards, but I think they are going to have to throw it a bit this week, which has been a huge problem the past couple years. Cobbs win is going to have to be a 17-14 type game, with either D or special teams coming up with a big play.

Disagree big time. Concordia is not a passing team, never have been (Except somewhat in the Griffin Neal/Zylstra era). They run a modified wishbone/inverted wishbone and they throw only around 10 times a game.

Their offense is predicated on misdirection using a variety of traps, counters, sweeps and draws. To be effective at stopping it your linebackers need to be incredibly disciplined.

Herzog had 80 yards rushing on 15 carries last year against UST, and he made some HUGE plays running the football. That is an offense that is very difficult to master and Herzog runs it about as good as anyone who has played at Concordia, save for Schumacher.

Herzog carries the ball a couple of 13/14 times a game. This would be a big blow to the Cobbers. Their backup may cause problems because of his size, but Herzog's productivity, while not conventional of a quarterback, will be missed big time.
