We've seen plenty of DIII coaches screaming from the sidelines and more than a few walk out on the field. I don't remember many getting penalized.

RE: UST recruiting.

Caruso isn't big on making promises to recruits. Some people like the candidness, some people don't. If you think about the fact that two D1 transfers at QB sat behind 5th year senior and first time starter, Fenske last year, then you pretty much know he's not going to act overly impressed with the fact that you were all-conference in high school.

That isn't to say that he isn't interested or more excited about some players than others, but if you look at the high profile guys, it took NDSU transfer Peder Olson about 8 games to be a regular contributor. U of M transfer Josh Parks started the season as the third RB. Southern Miss QB transfer Gabe Green is now playing WR just so he can get on the field.

The only guy who has been given some quarter after a few subpar performances was Jordan Roberts, and I think that was only because he possessed more equity than any player in the history of UST football, including Fritz Waldvogel.

So, as a typical DIII guy you're coming into a situation where FBS transfers from Power 5 schools are holding clipboards. You have to be willing to play on the scout team or not travel for about 2 years at a minimum in most cases, and a lot of guys aren't willing to do that.

As a North Dakotan I always follow the one player from ND they have on the roster every 5 years or so. This year it's AA ND Powerade Senior Athlete of the Year and ND Defensive POY, LB Cole Spies. But he's 5'11" 185 and UST's starters are 6'2" and 215 in his spot. Not saying it's impossible, but it'll take a ton of effort for him to even get a sniff of the field.

UST has basically assembled a middling FCS roster, and gone are the days where a guy like me would be anything other than practice fodder. I think that's hard for your typical high school stud to wrap his mind around because, I mean, it's D3.

That's one of the examples that came to mind.

Well from that grainy picture the coach certainly doesn't look very tall...and he is wearing a white shirt.  I can tell the game was at St John's though.  I bet the Johnnie radio guys had a thought or two on this.

Speaking of Haugen's unsportsmanlike conduct penalty yesterday, did anyone catch what actually happened? We've seen plenty of DIII coaches screaming from the sidelines and more than a few walk out on the field. I don't remember many getting penalized.

I heard from a GAC source I have that Haugen was upset because of an illegal block that was not called. Considering his team was down 34-7 in the 3rd it's somewhat understandable that he might have lost his sh-t a bit.

VOJ nearly had a brain aneurysm...listeners could have been easily forgiven for thinking the anti-christ was desecrating Clemens Field. Lots of "evil empire" talk. All because Caruso's passion carried him 10 yards or so onto the field...

Ha!

I actually enjoy his play by play...very smooth for D3 and quite enjoyable to listen to.

...and, for non SJU fans, it's fun to hear him lose his mind about calls / non calls.  After Bethel beat SJU in the MIAC basketball championship last year, I went back and listened to his call during the closing minutes, where there was a bad call that went Bethel's way.  VOJ did not disappoint.

He is certainly entertaining, if the listener can take his homerism with the proper perspective. I really enjoy listening to his interviews with Coach Fasching, where he tries to put ideas in Fasching's mind or get certain reactions out of him (the negativity towards the Target Field game was particularly amusing). Fasching counters him well with his calm, reasoned approach.

For sure - if you're wanting a commentary that at least attempts to be slightly unbiased (they're all cheering for their guys somewhat, and that's great), he's not what you want.

His counterpart on the football games is the master of reigning him in on his more "creative" opinions / thoughts / reactions.

I didn't listen to the target field game at all...what was his beef with that?

The VOC (voice of Cobbers) - particularly the play by play guy, but also the color, are actually my favorites in terms of announcers who make for very good listening for the visiting team.

I think Greg Schiano came up with F.A.M.I.L.Y. at Rutgers, and Fleck is part of Schiano's coaching tree. Case dismissed.

Far out.  That guy is far too intense for me.  It's like watching Jim and Tammy Fay working their trade.

He was just very opposed to the whole idea of playing at Target Field and made every effort to highlight the negatives of it and to get Fasching (and whoever else) to talk about what a sham it was.

I recall Caruso's use of the term F.A.M.I.L.Y had ties back to Greg Schiano in some form or fashion (just going from memory here).  The defendant in this case, Mr. Fleck, coached under Schiano at Rutgers in 2010.  Coincidence?  Hmmmm

So, perhaps Fleck has some license he is operating under from Schiano?  Then it's CARUSO that is the infringer! I knew it! I had a good, non-Johnnie bias reason to hate this guy all along.

I'll fix the caption:
