I had to look it up out of curiousity.

*The last time Gustavus lost a MIAC tennis title, Ronald Reagan was in office.

*UST has NEVER lost a MIAC indoor track title, and only been beaten a couple times on the outdoor stage the past couple decades.

*Augsburg is 206-7 against the MIAC in wrestling.

This is D3. Football gets a bigger spotlight, but as you can see above the gap is even bigger in other sports.

Yeah, but as UND is learning the hard way, when you go D1 you cut sports, so you can cast a bigger spotlight on your flagships. It's not about being at the top of the conference in each sport, it's about being competitive. With their proximity to the Twin Cities and the U of M being the only big game in town, the door is wide open for a mid-major or two. I'm not saying the UST and SJU should or even could join the Missouri Valley or the Summit in hoops, but their facilities are plenty good enough for Summit/Horizon in hoops and volleyball and Pioneer League in football.

You should see some of the absolute dive gymnasiums UND and NDSU play in for conference games. Sacramento State, IUPUI, IPFW, have WAAAYYYYY worse facilities than either UST or SJU. Bigger isn't necessarily better.

North Central is a tough team to put a finger on. Take out that odd Monday night weather delay continuation and they have had one heck of a season. It's the game of the week in round one and a lot of people will be tuning in. I hope they have some good bandwidth for their webcast.

Side note, can Linfield still charge the ABSURD $15 or whatever it is for a webcast in the playoffs? The Hardin Simmons - Linfield game should be a good one. I'm sure some people in TX won't be able to make the trip and that price gouge seems obscene when the whole rest of the D3 planet is offering it up for free.

I think they can, but I think whatever monies they get from that offsets whatever the NCAA subsidizes for them hosting.  So it would actually end up costing them money to charge for the webstream.

Anything can happen, I suppose, but I like the MIAC. I would dislike seeing football bigger than it is at SJU.  I fear it would change the fabric of the school if sport became even more of a business.

I agree with my esteemed Johnnie colleague. These decisions would have much more significant consequences for school identity and culture than have been considered here.
I like the D3 approach, even if it means some lopsided games.

Former Augsburg wrestler now U of M wrestler Owen Webster won his match 5-0 this weekend. I thought it was appropriate for the discussion this morning.  Webster went from starting at 184 for Augsburg last year to starting at 184 for the Gophers this year. He is fun to watch and now thanks to Webster and Duffman I follow Gopher Wrestling as well as Auggie Wrestling and I'm definitely confused but I know we are not going D1. 8-)

Back about decade-plus ago the NCAA put the kibosh on teams going D1 on only one sport and playing D2 or D3 in others. The existing schools (Johns Hopkins, Colorado College, RPI, Union, St. Lawerence, UMD, Bemidji St., SCSU, MSU-Mankato and about a dozen others) have been grandfathered in. Would make zero sense for Augsburg, because flagshipping wrestling makes no economic sense unless you cut nearly everything else. Which would have major Title IX implications.

When Dayton beat Ithaca 63-0 in the 1980 Stagg Bowl, they didn't stick around to see if they'd regress or other teams got better. They moved on. The Top 10 perennial teams in DIII have been the same for almost a decade, and the gap between them and the next 225 teams is massive, save for the John Carrolls and Concordias of the world. It's probably time for some of them to consider moving on.

The NCAA also prohibited schools such as Dayton from being able to play down in football.

Damn, someone beat me to it and gave a +K. I'm not really into the whole karma thing, except when wearing my -K as a badge of honor.

I just reversed mine to put you back at 199 and to increase that -K badge of honor.

Where are all the Eureka fans at??

By my estimate it's been about 90 years since Reagan strapped the pads on for them.

PurpleReign

Offensive guard Malcom Lawson and defensive back Joe Hird are both listed on the Tommie Basketball JV Roster.  At 6-3 and 265, that will be a big man charging down the lane.

The entire UMAC board has 68 pages. If I had to venture a guess, I'd say their dial up modem is down. Yes, they all share one dial up modem.... ::)
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

AO

I have sent the Eureka fan a pm inviting him to join the discussion,  now we play the waiting game.
I saw what was probably Eureka's worst game of the year.  They made some terrible turnovers and gave up a couple long pass plays for TDs.  I would be surprised if they kept it close but they will at least keep the game moving by running the ball.  Their RB LeAnthony Reasnover has 1800 yards and 31 tds this season.
