The Cobbers let SJU kneel the ball 3 consecutive times without making a final push towards the QB even though they had 1 TO remaining. Fairly easy to see the Cobbers quit. Doesn't bode well for the seasons ahead.
They didn't have the benefit of seeing the Case Western vs Carnegie Mellon finish.  Nearly identical situation but a Case defensive lineman managed to anger the Carnegie Mellon tackle enough during the victory formation to draw an unsportsmanlike penalty and extend the game, which might have cost Wheaton or UW-Lacrosse an at-large bid.

Or, ironically enough, Concordia may have missed out as well. The podcast noted this. One of the wildest finishes in history. It pays to plays 60 minutes  ;)

I come for the angst over Johnnies' offense from SJU fans and Pravda proclamations from Tommies and wrestling insight from old Auggies and reasoned analysis from Bethelites and point spreads from AO, but I stay for the junior college bashing and academic superiority expressed by grads of schools that, let's face it everyone, have produced a lot of really dumb folks.

only because we thought at the time that Concordia would be ahead of LaCrosse in the regional rankings.  Now we know that the committee refused to rank Whitewater and Concordia's criteria didn't get that boost.

He might be an-hole but he's OUR a-hole, as they say. Stopped clock is right once a day Duff, and this is your moment.

Actually a stopped clock is right twice a day - you aren't giving Duff enough credit.   ;D

It's a military time clock.

I only got to this game in the OT so I haven't seen the PF call on CMU's tackle.  I would love to see it and see if it that call had to be made.

We know from the final regional rankings that UW-La Crosse was still ahead of the Cobbers at selection time.  So they still needed more teams to lose to have a real shot.

And here we go for the quarters, semis, and finals...Academic Stagg 2017. And because its Academic Stagg the host committee has given the selection to Williamstown, MA. The NESCAC and Williams College are the epicenter of D3 academia and with their refusal to participate in such a tournament that is beneath them, we thought it might be worth giving them a dose of what playoff football looks like.

In quarter # 1:
SJU defeats Wartburg by 9. While Wartburg is a little more selective in their % accepted, the overall body of work from SJU's entering class is slightly stronger. ACT, SAT, class rank, etc.

Quarter # 2:
Hopkins wins going away. It was close for a half, but really opened up in the 2nd with a 14 point win.

Quarter #3:
Chapman beats UST by 10. The west coast school really shows UST how to run that West Coast offense and dominate the SAT.

Quarter #4:

RPI in a route. Glen Caruso's academic football alter ego devil coach continue to roll over opponents with no mercy. With 10 seconds left the coach had his 3rd stringers in their dropping 34 ACT's left and right on WNE. The final score 63- 7.

Semi's:

These really arent much of a battle on both sides of the bracket. Just like the Mount Union - Whitewater days, we are witnessing two superpowers on a path of destruction to the Stagg in Williamstown. Both Hopkins and RPI win by 4 scores plus to get to Williamstown

Final:

This one kind of reminded me of the two Mount Union - UST Staggs. Was close for a little while, but really blew open in the 2nd half. Hopkins wins going away. 28-10. RPI did go for a victory formation strip at the end, by flaunting their unusually high number of male / female ratio, but that was pushed away by Hopkins as a factor that can not be considered.

There was much consternation from CWRU (think UMHB in 2015) over who should be #2 in the final poll in the D3 academic football boards, but the committee awarded 2nd place to the team that got Williamstown, RPI.

We'll see you next year folks.

I can't say for sure but I assume the Jays still practice the walkaway drill and therefore a penalty wasn't going to happen.

It's too bad the SJU coaches don't do the same drill, rather than Woody Hayes'ing it up with opposing student athletes

Mr. Ypsi

miac952, really enjoyed your 'academic bowl', though I was a bit disappointed that people were so surprised that IWU rated out so well.  It has always been a quality school (I graduated in 1970 and when I got to grad school at U of Michigan I was astonished to find that I was BETTER prepared in most classes than students who did undergrad work at Ivies, Stanford, NESCAC schools, etc.), though it has recently gotten MUCH more selective in admissions.  I dare say half my classmates back in the 60s could no longer get admitted!  I've always believed that schools are better ranked by how much they can educate whoever they've admitted rather than the quality of students they let in in the first place, but that of course is much harder to measure than ACT/SAT test scores.

On the upside side, since it [D3] is less important to schools, we have less cheating and scandal.

If D3 has "less cheating and scandal," does that mean it's the least policed and enforced NCAA division?

Honestly, my ignorance of IWU's academic standing has more to do with the fact that I was not even aware the school existed until they beat Whitewater than anything else.

Amongst all the great content the board has had this week I didn't see a post about SJU's INT to seal the win Saturday, or I missed it. CON converted a 4th & 6ish with around 1:30 to go. On 1st and 10 they went with a diamond formation out right with a single receiver on the backside.

The SJU defense was playing soft on the backside and CON hit the receiver for another quick first down at the sticks. In a no huddle CON swapped the formation, with the diamond and single receiver switching sides of the field. The CB, Sam Westby, moved into press coverage on the single receiver and made a really nice play to highpoint the ball in coming up with the INT. The safety had also rotated over to provide coverage over the top. It was a really great adjustment on the fly. Especially considering CON was quickly developing a rhythm and had easily converted a 38 yd FG earlier in the game.

I was listening to the game on the TuneIn app at that point as #2 and I were headed to Geelong. She was quite entertained by my fist pumping the air as we drove through traffic.  She was kindly taking an interest by asking me what was going on after every play.  So VOJ is going nuts and my is fist raised in a victory salute when she asks, "What's an interception?"

That reminds of the time I was watching a Vikings game and my oldest daughter was about 2 or 3 years old. There was a big sack and I was cheering. The kid was excited too, "AWWW THEY ARE HUGGING. IT'S SO CUTE"
