All of those comparisons are pointless when SJU is a black box. None of us has that data.

(Although since SJU doesn't do a lot of traveling and I've heard over and over about stingy monks, they better not spend a lot!  ;D )

Pointless in terms of comparison, but still pretty interesting, IMO.  My hunch would be that SJU comes in somewhere ahead of BU, but behind UST in spending on football.

I wonder if Cost of Living is figured into this?  (These expenses are for things like coaches salary, etc, right?)  I'm guessing these are unadjusted.  I would figure that you'd have to pay the same coach a little bit less in Fargo / Moorhead or Stearns County than you would for the same guy trying to pay for life in the metro?

Don't let Oz stop from standing on his soapbox, while SJU hides behind its black box.

Me thinks SJU is actually quite close to UST. I would hazard a guess that labor / coaching costs account for 60-70% of that expense. SJU has tried to match UST full time staff nearly 1 for 1 in the last few years.

The question SJU fans should ask is why have they spent that much money and not seen the Quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament since before the dawn of the IPhone??

I should clarify an earlier comment. I think the St Thomas posters are great. MiacMan is especially neat. I don't have a lot of respect for Caruso's philosophy of coaching. Any anti-UST comments are directed there, not at the guys on this board. How about a Go Tommies! In fact, how about a big Go Everybody. Hey, I'm for everyone. No bias here. Well, maybe for the Raiders! ☠🏈

Serious question: Which particular aspects of Caruso's philosophy do you have concerns with?

There is room for valid criticism, but it is often waylaid with... other things... and gets lost in the mix.

I'm a big Caruso fan. It's hard not to be, considering what he's done with the program and his dedication to UST. I'm not in the area, so it's hard to gauge the breadth of his coaching fairly. That being said, there have been times when he's been too slow to bench underperforming players, particularly on the offense. I won't name names, but particularly a few years back he was hesitant to make some substitutions and I think it cost us. Also, our offense can be slow to adjust when we face really tough defenses (e.g. MUC and UMHB). Part of the problem in my view is that we don't really have this sort of competition in the MIAC, so the guys might not be used to the pressure. However, Caruso presents himself as an offensive strategist and I believe he still does most of the play calling, so I put a good amount of it on him.

I think he had handed over the playcalling reins to Kilian before he left and I've seen reports that Coach Carpenter will be taking over more this year.

Play calling is an art form, and Killian was masterful with it.

Caruso's playcalling has really matured since he arrived, but I wouldn't say it's one of his strongest points. It's very hard to run a very successful large scale program and script a good offensive game.

Killian was a very successful QB in his playing days. Carpenter was the same. Ex QB's can see the game differently.

Does Kilian call the plays at St Olaf?

Not sure. Until he has the dudes to build a game plan with and call plays it probably doesn't matter too much.

No doubt The Tommies are among the elite in Dlll. For that, I give Caruso credit. Also credit to the University for being supportive of the football program.
Now. 2012 Stagg Bowl. Mount running out the clock. Burke takes a knee. Tommies linemen go after him. 2nd down. Burke takes a knee. Tommie linemen try to tackle him. 3rd down. Burke asks Coach Kehres if he can throw into the end zone for a possible TD. Kehres says no. Which coach has the most class? Kehres is in the College Hall of Fame.
Then there are the 2 point conversions, when holding a size able lead. Don't forget the on-side kicks, the passes to the end zone all when holding a big lead. How about the monstrous scores?
JamtoTommie - those are a few things I was thinking about. Hope that answers your question.
In the meantime, I'll just go on rooting for the Purple Raiders to get #14. Looks pretty good this year.

Not that all Mount fans are Ohio State fans, but for those that are, my question would be how many like and support Urban Meyer and ridicule Caruso? Any point of disagreement or conversation should really shut down at that point.

Fair. Some are pretty concerned about him holding hands with his players, so I just wanted to check if there was something new to be outraged about. Appreciate your insights, even if, as has been rehashed time and again, I view a few of those situations differently. But I'm not unbiased and I can accept that.

Every experience I have had with him (generally including with my children) has been positive, so that's going to override whatever other beefs there are.

Woaaah woaah. Let's not mix-up covering for an abuser with a really egregious crime like going for a 2 point conversion or kicking onside after a penalty.
