I suggest that you quit brown-nosing the dirty Tommies.

That wasn't quite the constructive criticism that I had in mind.  ;)

Wow my head hurts from reading the past few pages,  this isn't the MIAC board I remember so my Suggestion is  "Hamms" that is all

Slow day today.

Anyway, all this discussion about the MIAC pecking order combined with this week's game reminded me that Concordia's AD left surprisingly last April after being there for less than a year. Seemed like odd timing and a bit suspicious, but I never heard any follow-up if there was a scandal or something else shady? I think he was a former Johnnie, so I wouldn't trust him ;) ;)

Anybody have the scoop?

I'm anxious for Saturday's game with C-MH on homecoming, always solid coaching from Horan, and Kragnes taking some nice steps from last year. We need to get out to an early lead and keep some distance on the scoreboard.

I think that the UST - Cord game, and the BU - SJU games might give the best available preview of how SJU / UST stack up to eachother prior to their actual playing.

I suspect the BU and Cord are likely at pretty similar levels this season, so if either UST or SJU doesn't perform pretty well in those games it could be indicative of what to expect for the big game.

Could end up meaning nothing too...

I'm curious which would be preferable for the teams - UST having Augsburg prior to SJU, and being able to rest their starters essentially as much as they want to, or SJU having BU the week prior.  While I think SJU will most likely win, they certanily won't be able to sleepwalk through it, or at least I hope not, and may walk away from the game a bit more worn, but certainly having had a better tune-up prior to UST.

None of you will be really surprised by the following comments, as most of the regulars know I've been hanging around here for a while now. (And I'll try to keep it short.)

When I perused the MIAC schedule back in August, I wondered just how things would play out concerning "the top four" teams. BU has been mediocre of late and were due for a "break out year or two", so to speak. But the Tommies and Johnnies have been on fire, and when the Cobbers beat Whitewater last year I wondered if Bethel would ever be able to win the conference again. Bethel just isn't going to invest into their football program at those kinds of levels. My hope is that the new-ish Bethel Football boosters organization can generate some "movement" and sport specific funding, so BU can start attracting the kind of athletes that are needed for consistent runs into the post season.

I'd be happy with turf, lights and a stadium upgrade to seat all the current attendees of games. As I have traveled around the conference, other teams have better facilities. One has to wonder how many athletes do not come to BU because of facilities? And I have to keep reminding myself that it takes a long time to build a winning culture within a college football program. I think  BU is behind the times. I wish I had millions of dollars to throw their way, as I think they deserve it. But i don't, and nobody I have any kind of influence over does either. Imagine that?

So, back to the schedule. Lots of ifs over the rest of the season. (Hopefully, I have them all considered correctly.)

If Concordia can surprise St. Thomas this week and win, and
If Bethel can beat St. John's, then
The conference could be decided on October 20th, when the Cobbers visit the Royals.

There are still way too many "what ifs" for this to all play out, one of which is the somewhat wild card team of St. Olaf, who is still undefeated, and plays Bethel on Oct. 13th, the same day as the Johnnies host the Tommies. There's a whole lot of football to be played over the last 6 weeks of the season - hang on to your hats.

I certanily agree on the facilities - especially on the turf.  I hope that they invest in that in the near future.  They spent a boatload of money on the Brushauber commons about 9 years ago now, which was well needed and spent, IMO, then more on the Anderson center a few years ago to facilitate the
various masters programs, so hopefully athletics is next in line?  They did renovate the Robertson Center a couple years back, so perhaps that is the start of a trickle of athletics spending?

Overall, I still don't know that they could compete for the MIAC annually like SJU / UST, but every 5 years would be attainable.  I don't personally believe that this is the year, though I think (hope) that they can keep things competititve with SJU / UST, and hopefully knock off the Cobbers, though that isn't a sure thing.  I think their time may come in a couple of years when the Johnnies and Tommies are both breaking in newer QB's, and Bethel is being led by a seasoned Jaran Roste (I think he's going to be really good).

Happy Friday to all!

SJU folks - what do you have in the pipeline for QBs post-Erdmann/Alvord? I see Erdmann is listed as a Junior on the roster, but I thought he had followed the same path as Perra? Perra is a senior, although I guess Perra saw the field for the Gophers where Erdmann was a redshirt at PSU?

We have a few guys that could have eligibility next year that I don't think are likely to return. It's going to be a big transition year (aren't they all?) especially at a few major positions, with Trettel, Parks, and Perra likely gone, so an opening may be there for Bethel if Roste continues to develop. On the other hand, I think this Freshman class for UST is one of the strongest I've seen. Lots of young talent in the pipeline that we've already had a chance to see.

Sophomore Chris Backes has been taking the 3rd-string reins.

I believe that is the case - Perra used a year of eligibility at the U.

I guess Perra was a year ahead of Erdmann also, per last year's KSTP article about them playing each other in High School, where Perra was a Senior and Erdmann was a Junior. For some reason I was thinking they each had a year at respective B1G squad and transferred at the same time, but I guess not.
