This isn't football related but I wanted to share it.  The Bethel volleyball team's charter bus leaving Whitewater was involved in a fatal accident.  None of the players or the bus driver were injured but the two occupants of the vehicle, ages 20 &22, that collided with them both died at the scene.  The team remained in Whitewater over night and returned to the campus today.

I was heartened to read that the UWW football team lent Bethel one of its buses so it could get to a hotel for the night.

Heard the news just before stepping out the door this morning to do some deer hunting scouting North of Alexandria. Thanx for passing it along.

Yes, badgerwarhawk I  did see on local Twin Cities KSTP on the 5:00PM news today (Sunday). Tragic news, prayers for the young women who died.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

St John's certainly laid out the blueprint on how to dominate St Thomas yesterday! I wonder why they didn't go with this game plan last season at Target Field?

Does St. Olaf have a ****ty schedule or not? One way of looking at it they were able to start the season undefeated. Now they get to finish out the season getting pounded.
Thoughts?

The students and alums enjoyed September and early October.  The game recap videos looked great too.

Now, it's on to real opponents.  Didn't Gustavus go 5-0, 0-5 a couple years ago?

Just letting you know you will be in my thoughts today as you say goodbye to John. I feel pretty certain lots of people around the country will also be with you, at least mentally. Of course, his legacy will continue on. Gee, if only more of us could be like him.
I was thinking about the people we hear about that are known by one name: Fabian (back in my era), Cher, Sting and numerous others. Now, in certain conversations, if we just say "John", everyone will know who we mean!
As I stated in an earlier post - rest in eternal peace Coach Gagliardi, or as he would prefer, RIP John! ✝😢

Week 8 MIAC

What a fun week 7 to be a Johnnie fan. I'll talk through play-off implications at the end. Hamline has the bye this week.

Blow-out game this coming week will most likely be Carleton traveling up to the cities to St. Thomas. The Tommies will work out their frustration of losing to the Johnnies on the hapless Knights.

Augsburg travels down to Gustavus Adolphus this coming weekend, and if the Gusties light a fire like they did against the Cobbers, this could also be a blow-out game. But I just don't see that level of angst against the Auggies, and expect them to score more points than the Knights will against the Tommies.

The Johnnies are riding high after tipping the scales against the Tommies, and will do a pretty good beat-down on the Oles as they visit Collegeville. This could also be a blow-out, it just depends on what the Oles bring and how much the Johnnies play their second and third string players at a home game.

Game of the week, by default, has to be Concordia visiting Bethel. The Cobbers have had an extra week to lick their wounds after getting upended by Gustavus two weeks ago. At the beginning of the year, both the MIAC coaches' poll and the D3 Kickoff magazine expected Concordia to be the number three team in the conference at the end of the year. Bethel handled Gustavus fairly easily and one would expect them to take care of business against the Cobbers, especially at home. But the Cobbers have just about always played the Royals tough. But I do expect the Royals to be the victors this weekend. If the game does turn out the way I expect it will, Concordia could be looking at a stretch of three or four losses in a row, as they play St. John's the week following and face St. Olaf the week after that, which could be the game for fourth and fifth place in the conference.

So let's take a look in our magic eight ball to see what the other possibilities/probabilities in the MIAC for the remainder of the season might be. If the Johnnies, Tommies and Royals all win all their games over the next three weeks, makes for an exciting final week in the MIAC. The Johnnies play their final non-conference game against independent Thomas More, who just lost their second game of the year this past week by Muhlenberg, rankled 20th in the D3 poll. One would expect the Johnnies to win that game.

It is my opinion, which I have stated elsewhere up thread, that Bethel played the Johnnies closer the week before the Johnnies played the Tommies. Granted, the Johnnies may have held back on their "new offense" so the Tommies had no film on it, but no matter how you cut it, when the Tommies visit the Royals that last week, it has all the makings of a play-in game for the play-offs that start the following week. And there is the distinct possibility that the Cobbers end up as a 5 and 5 or 4 and 6 team when the season comes to an end. The season still has a lot of games for the teams to play to see how it all shakes out. Welcome to MIAC football.

Nice job Art,

Missed the big game due to a wedding (that I officiated) I did talk to a Tommie/Tommie parent who was at the game and flat out said "we got beat by a better team" Congrats to the Johnnies. It does appear Art has it right and both Bethel and the Tommies will make the playoffs only they will start the week before the official NCAA playoffs. Hopefully Caruso and company can turn things around and gain some momentum going into that final game against Bethel. RIP John, they won one for the Gipper!

3. Threw to the outside and picked apart man coverage...o-line gave Jackson enough time!
Does St. Olaf,Gustavus or Bethel have the athletes to duplicate this type of game plan vs UST? I would venture to say Gustavus has the QB and receivers but not sure of the O-line play. Bethel with Marsh at QB if he plays like he did against SJU could put a scare into the Toms. Time will tell how it shakes out.

That was my thought as well - I very much agree with the logic - UST has a ton of talent / speed on defense, so you're going to end up pretty frustrated trying to run on them.  I certainly don't thing that St. Olaf, or Gustavus can do so, and I don't think that Roste is quite there yet either - would love to be proven wrong.  SJU is probably the only MIAC team with the horses to execute on that, so we'll probably have to wait until the playoffs, most likely even the second round, to see if someone else can duplicate the game plan?

Blueprint, sure, but there aren't a whole lot of teams that could execute that against the Tommies.

The line's ability to block the blitz-every-down Tommie defence was spectacular. The Tommies throw so many men at the o-line that I bet the Johnnie linemen are suffering a little PSTD today.  But they bought Erdmann enough time, he commanded enough poise, and the receivers all had very sticky fingers.  I reckon very few D3 teams would have stood up against the Tommie pressure.

It's important to remember the defence and the seven turnovers they forced.  The Tommie offence was potent, but the big plays belonged mostly to the Johnnie D.

How great would it have been if Parks had stayed a Johnnie as he once intended?  That offence would be so potent that you wouldn't be allowed to watch it without a doctor's prescription.

That was surprise to me - I was listening, not watching, so I wasn't getting the best read, but vs. Bethel, who I think has a solid, but not incredibly strong D-line / LB group was able to get to Erdmann pretty consistently, so my thought was that getting him any time vs. UST was going to be a big problem.  The SJU o-line really stepped it up compared to last weekend.

Any Johnnies still basking in the glow will want to listen to the opening topic (at a minimum!) for the d3football podcast.

Even if they did duplicate the game plan, I don't think Caruso and Kuchinski went home threw their arms up in the air and said "Wow, I guess if someone else does that game plan I guess we're going to have the face the fact that we're going to lose"  ;D I am sure they are anticipating this and that adjustments will be made.
