I don't know, exactly.  10-15 years ago, I would have said a video board was insane at the D3 level, but they're popping up everywhere now.  Not saying SJU needs that, but an update is long overdue.  I don't even know what kind of options are out there--maybe I should peruse the Daktronics website.  ;D

Call me an old fart, but I like the old board.  I say keep it and instead build an iphone/android app that will give access to replays over a local wifi network.  Perhaps the radio feed as well so people at the ground can have one ear listening to VOJ as they watch the game.

Keep the old analogue world where the people live as it adds a certain charm that suits St John's and Clemens Stadium.  But let the digital technology revolution still do it's thing and bring an interactive experience to the fans in the stands.  Heck, something like that which creates a unique gameday technology only available at the ground could be an attraction that brings in fans to the stadium.

EDIT:

More justification for the admin lurkers that may be reading here.  Smart phones are ubiquitous.  Use them.  Plus, you'll know exactly who your most loyal attendees are and which game they attend, even on general admission after paying cash for a ticket.  You can make related offers or programs through the app, like alumni or homecoming messages, and increase the entire SJU connection.  All through an app on a device that your customers/stakeholders bring with them.  Centered on football.  Then add the same for hockey and basketball, in the same app.  Now you know your cross-sport customers.  And you can market cross sports.

Anyways.   It's free advice.  I'm happy to consult for nada.

EDIT II: Add in ticket purchases to the app as well.

EDIT III:  Let the app have immersive stats, integrated with the feeds from other MIAC schools so people can keep an eye on those games as well.  Twitter feeds from the school and coaches.  Highlights post game, etc.  But if you want the replays, etc, then you use the app on the local Clemens Stadium network.  Sounds like a winner to me.  Certainly worth exploring with some prototypes and customer feedback.

EDIT IV: You're essentially presenting all the content from the online offer for free at the stadium, with a new skin optimised for quick usage at a game.  Plus whatever other networking content you want to add.  Get the computer science department to whip something up.  I wanna see the prototype already.
You may have wanted to DM this to Bob Alpers & Tom Stock. Now a Carleton kid reading this thread will develop the app, sell it to a Tommie & the Tommie will claim your idea as his own. Loose lips sink ships Oz, I'd think a Navy man would realize that !
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

OZ, I hope they build this nice little app for you. Me, I want less time on my phone so just give me a nice scoreboard so I can see replays on giant screen instead of squinting at a tiny one.

re: Hamline-Johnnies. That 1994 game was a classic. Really one of the most consequential games in SJU history, or at least in the 1990s. It was the game when an unknown third-string QB named Kurt Ramler took over for the injured starter Pat Kemper, who had replaced the No. 1 guy Ken Pletcher, who got hurt the week before. Homecoming for SJU. John was still recovering from his broken leg. Johnnies were up 20-14 and driving at end of half when Kemper threw a pick Hamline returned 101 yards, longest return in MIAC history. That was also the play where Kemper got drilled and injured, bringing on Ramler. Johnnies trailed by 7 late but Ramler led them to a score. Johnnies go for 2 and don't get it. Hamline wins. My cousin attended Hamline and called to taunt me as I was attending Worthington Community College at the time but she already knew I was headed to SJU the next year. Her future hubby, Eric Johnson, was a running back for Hamline. A great one. Some other notes: When Kemper threw his pick, the intended receiver was Andy Auger, dad to Tommy. Also, Johnnies had three drives get inside the Hamline 15, which ended with 2 picks and a missed FG.

The next week, the Johnnies, now led now by Ramler, who would go on to a three-year run that made him one of the greats in SJU history, beat St. Thomas as the refs missed Malmberg running out of bounds on a late TD. Johnnies win that, save their season and go on to the national semis where they lose perhaps most excruciating game of past 30 years to Albion. Lots of controversial calls, including infamous Albion pass that maybe bounced and led to long run and go-ahead score in final three minutes. Johnnies probably win the national title that year if they win. Albion did win it 38-15 (they'd beaten Mount by 1 earlier in playoffs). The Albion coach said against the Johnnies it was the most trouble their offense had in four years.

Here's Albion guys talking about that game. The conditions, the Johnnies "never practicing" but the game being a brutal affair. Includes the controversial pass! Impossible to tell here if it hits the ground but the way the receiver describes it....eh, I think Johnnies might have had an argument. SJU 6 turnovers in 19-16 loss.

https://youtu.be/qHECfAGLc44?t=424

In 1996 Hamline led 23-14 in the fourth. Cousin's hubby Eric scored to put them up 9 (that year he was second-leading rusher and most TDs in league). Johnnies rally to win 29-23 on pass to Herbst with 30 seconds left. SJU got sacked 10 times but pulled it out.

There was a pic on Facebook of Dick Tressel, the coach who led Hamline to so many great years, visiting John a few months before John's death.

And NOW...you know...the rest of (high-pitched voice) the story.

For some reason SJU had the turnover bug in playoff games-89 and 91come to mind and what sfury just posted-Albion.

I just randomly pulled up this one from Chadron State (D2, out in western Nebraska).
Charon State- I believe Chris Harris transferred from there. He must have weighed out a winning program with an old school score board vs a not so winning program and a fancy video board  ;D

Yeah, Harris has been around--Chadron State and Montana State.

Good stuff.  That was just before I started following the Johnnies, so it was cool to see some of that footage.

Quiet here today!

Bit of a boring period before next weekend and the playoffs, I suppose.

Really curious to see how UST and SJU are seeded in terms of when they'd potentially meet. (Disclaimer - while I would love to be wrong, I don't think that BU can knock UST off - might keep it interesting, like the SJU game, but I doubt they can come up with enough offense to overcome the Tommies)  I think they're both capable of going on a run, but it will be interesting to see when they'd potentially meet again.

In 2014, it would have been round 2 if St Thomas hadn't lost.
In 2015, they met in round 2.
2016, it would have been round 3 if SJU hadn't lost.
2017, they wouldn't have met until the finals.

I have no idea how things will stack up this year or what kind of pairing we would be looking at for round 1 if we make it in. Whatever I thought I knew, I'm going to disregard after seeing the first regional ranking and with as much potential change as we could see the next few weeks.

Good God, you work for a drug cartel?

EDIT:  By the way, I keep checking youtube to see if this year's Grand Final between Collingwood and West Coast is posted but isn't yet and that's a shame.  It was a heck of a game and well worth watching.  I did find a Hawks v Geelong game from 2008 that is well worth watching and bookmarked it.  So there's something.

If this year's GF ever is uploaded I'll share it for those who are interested.

I assume the answer is "No", but has there ever been a championship game with two teams from the same conference?

The answer is yes!  In 1978 Baldwin-Wallace and Wittenberg played for the title in Stagg Bowl VI when both were members of the OAC.

It has happened in FCS when NDSU and Youngstown State met in the title game.

I wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility. Johnnie-Tommie in the Stagg Bowl--that would be a championship game for the ages.
