Anyone else having trouble with the podcast? It plays the first 15 seconds and then stalls out  ???

I had no issues this morning

Only problem I have with it is they aren't discussing St Thomas' first round playoff game.

Crap. Now I'm sad again.

I knew you weren't there. Why, you're only my age. OK, my birthday is January 31. Then we will be exactly the same age. 😃🍺
I forgot. Good luck Johnnies. Maybe Stagg Bowl? Long way off. Go Johnnies! 🏈

Out of 13,000 students, only a moron couldn't put a team together!

Not how any of this works.

I wish: "Enrollment has little-to-nothing to do with a college or university's athletic success" was the first sentence of every Star Tribune article about UST winning something, because that's the well everyone goes to in the comment section, followed by "they need to go DII."

I still think you are on to something with the UST AD hire. You did see where UST is now opening a College of Health Sciences including a School of Nursing (working with area hospitals)? Is the first step to a Med school? The last time this was discussed it included a move to DI athletics.

Seriously, U$T does need to go D2.  Think if all the D2 glory that could be achieved!

It's cash that matters, not enrolment.  Top D1 programs in the big conferences spend $45m-$55m a year on the football program (with the Aggies pulling in $150m in revenue.  Yowzers).  This spend is consistent whether enrolment is 8.5k at Notre Dame, 33k at Alabama or 46k at THE Ohio State.  It's cash, not students, that builds a program.  Students are just a poor proxy for financial resources.

From our little Title IX exercise at the beginning of the season, we see the top DIII teams in the top conferences spend about $1.5m to $2m (UHMD is an outlier at $2.5m) on football.  The mid-level MIAC team spends $500k to $750k.  If DIII team wants to enjoy the same level of success at the higher levels then they just need to spend a whole lot more cash.  Size has little to do with it.

Typing this up has made me like the DIII philosophy, even if it leads to utter beatdowns in the post season.  There's not a lot of difference between the top programs and average in terms of resources.  In all comes down to commitment and just a smidge more money to turn a program into a contender.  But it also means that 240 schools can afford to run a program and all 240 could decide to be a national contender if they wanted to drop just a little more cash on football than they already do.

Brown just fired their coach after 25 seasons.

Any chance a local D3 or D2 guy gets a look?
I wouldn't be upset if Caruso bounced for something relatively high profile like this on the East Coast.

Yes. Now I heard a rumor that the Johnnies are facing an invasion of pie rats this weekend. Well we have our own pet Rats that have been around for almost 70 years. When I get it all figured out, I may comment on it later in the week. We will not put up with invader pie rats.   :)

I don't know that Brown is going to hire a D-III head coach. Princeton famously wanted to hire Larry Kehres back in the early part of this century but beyond that, I haven't even heard a D-III head coach mentioned for any Ivy head coaching jobs.

I seriously don't know how to ask this without sounding like an a-hole. But what has UST achieved in sports that people are asking them to move to D2? And i'm Being genuine and serious here and not condescending.

Pat Coleman

From a "what have you accomplished in Division III" standpoint UST is a much better candidate for D-II than, say, Frostburg. The school has swept the commissioner's cup/all-sports trophy in the MIAC in both men's and women's sports for the past 11 years and has a couple of MBB national titles and a baseball title in that span. Probably more but that's what I know offhand.

That said, of course, Division II is no place for anyone who plays ice hockey. You'd have to play D-I hockey or just give it up entirely as D-II hockey is essentially non-existent.
