I haven't been here for quite a while and was pulled back to see what people thought about the pre-season rankings. But the first post I see is a Tommie still crying. Very funny.

I haven't seen you post in a while but I logged in after the twins game and the first post I see is Oz whining again. Very funny something.
Otoh, if we keep crying about injustice will you respect your distance?

Speaking of the Tribe/Twins game.... :o ;D

And now it is 1.

We have Shane (or Justin if you look at his baseball card) Bieber on the bump tonight.  I like our chances!   8-)

Speaking of the Tommie/Johnnie game, is anybody interested in doing a Post Patterns pre-game at some nearby pub? Looks like it will the last opportunity for such an event in St. Paul.

I'm down.
There's a pre-game event being planned in a nearby parking lot a short 13 minute walk from the venue. That's where I'll be hanging out.

As far as pre-game bars/pubs there's not much nearby now that O'Gara's is gone...here are some places I would suggest:
-The Dubliner(hours say 11 am but might open early for a big event and it's on the Green Line..they also run the restaurant next door).
-Trend Bar (Dive bar opens @ 10 am...just not sure how many of the Tommie Elite will be comfortable hanging out on the north side of University Ave).
-Midway Saloon (next to the Trend but doesn't open on Saturdays until noon...more of Jazz joint than a sports bar).
-Augustines on Selby (not a sports bar in anyway...they have maybe one or two TV's...it's in an old laundromat...it's a great place but maybe not a pre-game location...opens early on Saturday and has bloody mary bar).
-Groveland Tap (opens @11 am...great atmosphere but you will probably need to uber or lyft to the venue.
-Buffalo Wild Wings on Snelling (opens @ 11am....big and spacious...but still it's BW's...it is on the A-line route...those busses are going to be packed especially since they have stops near Plum's and Tiff's).
-Sweat Pea's Public House (known by the locals as TBNTP-The Bar Next To Plums...formerly Goby's...it's since been updated and is a nice place.).
-The Nook (great burgers...opens @ 11am but it's small)
-Plum's and of Course Tiff's (both on the A-line bus route....like I mentioned earlier those busses are going to be packed like a sardine can by 12:30pm and by the time they get up by Buffalo Wild Wings i can't imagine them having room.
There a couple brew pubs along the Green line but they don't usually open until 11 am or noon....those would be decent post-game locations.

It's the weekly Oz meltdown because the Tommies path to D1 is getting attention. He is struggling with the ripple of DI micro-aggressions hitting him down under. In five years the MIAC and UMAC will be one in the same to media and casual observers. Oz is in the anger stage of the grief cycle. Give him time and space.

What's the parking lot event all about? Is it open to all? Maybe I can have my driver bring me over that way.  ;)

Going to go out on a limb here and suggest that Erdmann either repeats as All-world 1st team D3 QB and gets some consideration for an NFL practice squad gig, or his injury troubles hit before he gets to the Tommie game and it ends up a lost season (Alvord is gone right? Who's the #2?)

Alvord is gone.  Chris Backes was the third QB last season, though I hope they have someone waiting in the wings as I personally don't see Backes taking the Johnnies too far.  Erdmann will leave some big shoes to fill.  I really hope that he stays healthy this season.

I believe that one of the keys to the Johnnie's success last year was that they stayed pretty healthy.  Aside from Brinker's ongoing issues, I don't recall them really losing a starter for an extended period of time (I guess Auger was out for a while, now that I think back).

My money would be on sophomores Abe Havelka (Owatonna) or Reed Smith (Lakeville North). Both come from strong high school programs and played in a number of big games during their high school careers.
....and one will be playing TE,it's kinda baked into the cake. Time will tell but Havelka would seem to have the inside track. The Lakeville North program has not yet discovered the forward pass.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

All I can say is that it might be held in the parking lot of a small business operated by a fellow Johnnie and some of the football team parents. Not my event to really invite people to but if a person drives up and or down Snelling Avenue they might be able to find it.

Pssst: The University of St. Thomas, ousted by the Division III MIAC, is commissioning the Populous sports facilities firm, which designed the Gophers' Siebert Field, to assess the cost of renovating and building new on-campus athletic faclities.

The university is considering the Division I Pioneer League, which doesn't provide athletic scholarships, for football, and the Division I Summit League for other sports.

St. Thomas, which recently hired two Penn State assistant athletics directors, has required coaches to keep new conference talks confidential.

Pioneer League Football members: Butler,Davidson,Dayton, Drake, U of Jacksonville,Marist,U of San Diego, Moorehead State (KY),Stenson,Valparaiso.
Summit League Members: Denver, North Dakota, NDSU, Omaha,Oral Roberts,Purdue Fort Wayne,South Dakota, SDSU,Western Illinois.

A couple things about The Pioneer League football conference: Even though this is non-scholarship the competition will be a couple steps beyond the elite schools in D3. If UST thinks that some how jumping to D1 (or even D2) is going to dramatically change their attendance numbers, they are delusional.

A couple things about The Summit League: if UST thinks they are going to out recruit NDSU in any sport, male or female, in the Twin Cities they are once again delusional. If UST thinks they will have any form of athletic success in their first 5 years, they are once again delusional. There will the be basketball, volleyball and baseball/softball equivalent to Monkey Stomps for several years.

So ice hockey, especially women's ice hockey, appears to be the gateway to D1. No mention of that Shooter? The WCHA seems logical, but once again travel to Alaska & Alabama Huntsville can make for some long road trips compared to Moorhead or Northfields MN.

Pat Coleman

I haven't seen anyone report any of these things. If even Charley Walters isn't claiming they'll find success in the first five years, I think you can agree that nobody is actually deluded.

There's not a ton of PFL-D3 crossover, but Butler has played Franklin fairly regularly and won every game, but not outclassed a team which is generally in the 20-40 range in D-III. You could put UST in the PFL right now and they would hold their own -- because that's not saying much.

There is a fair chance college hockey could be done in Alaska. Severe cuts to university system there. And no one wants to travel there any more.

On another note, I was out for beers with a buddy on Capitol Hill on Friday night. Overheard someone at the next table discussing the MIAC/UST situation. Turns out he was  U of M guy interning on the Hill.

If UST is able to manage the jump to D1... yeah, competing in the headcount scholarship sports right away will be tough (especially football and basketball but also volleyball, tennis) as those rosters in D1 are filled with full ride scholarships. However, in the equivalency scholarship sports like softball/baseball, hockey, soccer, etc., UST should be able to compete quickly - especially in the women's sports. Those D1 athletes are often on fractional scholarships or playing as walk-ons. Just glancing at NCAA stats, D3 teams in equivalency sports win some games vs. D1 teams on occasion, albeit with very few games.

All my friends on this board

Mount Union started physicals today for football. First practice is Thursday, 8/15. First game is at Rose-Hulman on 9/7.
Have you all started getting ready yet? Should be a good year for our teams. Last year in Texas, not that there's anything wrong with that. Next year, Stagg Bowl at The Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio!
Best of luck to all of our teams, injury-free, hard fought contests. As I often say, GO EVERYBODY!  ;D

Planning on being back home in MN for several weeks this fall and definitely hoping to get to a Johnnies home game; thinking maybe the Augsburg or Bethel games, the 5th and 12th. Last Johnnies game I saw? Homecoming 2011 vs. Augsburg. Also known as the greatest moment in Augsburg football history but not one I'd like to remember. Maybe see some folks at one of the games if I do make it up.
