if we ever hosted the Gophers for an OOC matchup

There is no need to worry about this ever happening!  ::) Seriously, though, Big Ten teams don't generally play in Summit League gyms.

That was my conclusion, but a co-worker posed the question and it made me think a bit.

Not so sure that couldn't happen. Big Ten schools, including both Michigan and Michigan State do play schools in basketball like Cleveland State, Detroit, Bradley, Central, Eastern and Western Michigan, and Indiana State.

Just for kicks, I pulled up the career series for Michigan against Central Michigan. Twenty-one games, all at Crisler Arena.

Yeah....The gophers are never doing a road game against the Tommies. The only time you will see any power five team in a small arena is the warm, beach destination tournaments during the holidays or the neutral site oddities like they had in Sioux Falls last year, with appearance fees from T denny to entice Ok state and UMN.

In today's BPI , RPI world to go dancing in the tournament, teams like UST will have a hard time scheduling road games with revenue enticements. The big schools are looking for teams in that 60 - 130 ish power ranking range. A new entrant like UST gives them little to no computer ranking value, no matter the margin of victory, until they prove themselves that they can be in that group (Top 4 or 5 Summit finish would get them there)

Michigan State might play a neutral site game against a team like University of Detroit in Detroit, but it will be at a place like the Pistons arena, and the entire purpose behind it is because East Lansing is a couple hours from Detroit and it's an opportunity to showcase the brand to recruits in the area.

SJU pretty much did it last year, and came darn close (1 rushing yard) the previous year at Target Field.

Hopefully our pass defense is shored up a bit this year or it's going to be a rough time with SJU, Bethel, and Gustavus again.

As others have pointed out, there are always exceptions to the rules. But normally a team can't rely on just the pass or just the run to beat a good team.

For some, it appears that because SJU has had trouble running the ball against UST the last couple of years then that means no one can run the ball against them. Just pointing out that it can be, and has been done.

Good research, Pat.  And you gentlemen both know why that is...aside from the showcase opportunity, bigger crowds and bigger payout to the visiting team.  Besides, from a players standpoint, who wouldn't want to play all those games at Crisler Arena as compared to Central Michigan's Rose (uh, oops, I mean McGuirk) Arena? ;)

Edited for correct name of CMU's renovated arena :)

If the internet isn't the place for pedantry (not pedanticism, FYI) I don't know what is.

First they came for the Tommies and I said nothing, because I was not a True Tommie, then they came for the pedants, and that's where I drew the line.

Well hot dog, it is a word  I'm just here for opinions from people more opinionated than myself. If I ever take myself too seriously here, y'all can feel free to set me straight.

Except for during Tommie Johnnie week. That's serious business.

My question about waaaaaaaaaaay too early Pool C teams made it into the podcast this week.

Pat - jamtod is actually an acronym for the members of my family, but back when I was still jamto (before D was born, now 15 months), a friend gave me the "just airing my thoughts out" moniker so I ran with it. I added "daily" but it's probably time for a new twitter handle.

And here I was trying to figure out what came after jack ass...

I hope you are having a lovely night as well

I think we found one of the random John fan's that is a frequent flyer at Tommie playoff games. Fits the bill too. Stanbob loves to comment on each every UST article in the star tribune comments cesspool.

you my friend, are badly informed...

I would imagine since Esten came to U$T via Penn State, a Tommie/Nittany Lion non-conference football game is on the horizon.  What's the line on that, AO?
I tried putting that potential matchup into the Massey predictor tool and my computer started on fire.

You might have a point there, ROR. Still, it's pretty amazing what an empowered A&D firm can do with a historic old space to retro fit it for modern sports. That said, even if they had to demolish the site and rebuild something entirely new, it might be a very viable option. UST's issue is finding land and parking for a Hockey venue. The fair grounds are just a few miles down Snelling. If there was a partnership between UST and the State to build something like this, it would also alleviate some of the funding issues for both sides.

UST agrees to put up major dollars, in exchange for their branding and marketing (i.e. it gets to feel like their home ice). State agrees to help with some funding, in exchange for using it for HS & youth Hockey, as well as a concert venue and for State Fair activities.

Spitballing, the Giants and Jets have figured out how to share a stadium and still make it feel like a home field for each team. Wouldn't be that hard to replicate something along those lines for UST.
I don't think the state fair wants to host hockey anymore.  It'd only be about a million to update the ice making equipment.  They just like to use their coliseum for horse and car shows.

As someone who has ridden horses and showed cattle in the State Fair Coliseum, let me say it is getting a little dated even for those types of events when compared to other venues that host big time livestock and equine events.

Everyone is failing to take note of the gauntlet that Carleton has to run- this week Hamline, next week Augsburg; they get a reprieve Oct. 26 with a wounded UST followed with a bye week and wrapping up the season with Concordia. Carleton controls their own destiny. Having played St. Olaf, St. John's & Bethel during the first three weeks of the MIAC schedule they are clearly licking their chops as the weather turns bad and three yards and a cloud of dust becomes their battle cry.  ::)
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!
