I just had a quick read on the train.  The Thomas More women's basketball team had their 2016 national championship vacated for almost the same thing, head coach loaning a car to a player along with some other violations.

I think the big concern for UHMB is that this was both a pre and post recruiting violation. And that multiple football staff members participated with the knowledge of and in addition to the head coach.  Further, the faculty member of the athletics oversight committee overheard some students bragging about someone getting a free car and dismissed it as hearsay, but 10 months later followed up virtually out of the blue with the gossiping student which is when UHMB self-reported. It's plausible to think that there may be a bit of a lax attitude towards the rules at that time.

Pat inserted an old 2016 link to the Thomas More story over on the ASC Football thread. That NCAA penalty seemed very harsh too. A girl, who was a family friend of an assistant coach, was taken into the assistant coach's family home for a few months after knee surgery. Thomas More's recent jump to the NAIA makes one wonder how much the NCAA's hounding them contributed to that.

This is all in our story as well.

Yes, undoubtedly it was a good read. I enjoy going to the primary source sometimes and having a look see, even if I don't learn much new stuff.

Anyone else think it's cool and neat that they named the Summit League after the street that St Thomas is located on? They've been anticipating our invite for years!
I thought the same thing the day of the big announcement and got a few groans from SJ2 alum at work that day

Didn't  Randy Moss' daughter play a key role in the Thomas More scandal?

I just did a Google search and found out that, yes, it was Randy Moss's daughter who stayed with the coach and triggered the violations.

Doubly shambolic since you reckon Randy Moss could have easy dropped a few quid to pay rent and for the car. I'm amazed that Thomas More didn't realise the danger of the situation. That's really bad luck, I reckon.

What made the harshness of the penalty especially egregious (IMO) was that Sydney Moss was 'paying' for the accommodations by 'babysitting' the coach's kids and doing light housework.  And she wasn't receiving any real benefit since, to not lose her apartment (which was almost inaccessible for someone who had just undergone knee surgery) she continued to pay rent on the apartment throughout.  (BTW, my understanding is that Randy and Sydney were rather estranged at the time.)

But then, the NCAA has never let common sense enter into punishment decisions.  My favorite example is when Steve Alford, one of the most 'straight-arrow' athletes ever, was suspended a game for posing (for free) for a sorority charity calendar.  In a wonderful gesture, IU had him serve the suspension against U Kentucky, at least at that time the most penalized program in the history of the NCAA! ;)

Sydney Moss and her father are estranged, shall we say.

Weekly interview with Coach J is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRdbDTUy9qw

Seemed to be pretty even and respectful towards the upcoming Johnnie game. It's gonna be a heck of a battle.

I'll be viewing from up North as we close the cabin for the season.

I was on the SJU grounds crew and Br. Mark Kelly had us out there clearing the bleachers and field before the game. We were also clearing the rest of campus into the wee morning hours.

I didn't know you worked for Br. Mark!  I did grounds the summer before my freshman year and through freshman year.  One of my favorite memories is shoveling deer **** off of the field prior to a '99 playoff game vs. UW-SP while being heckled by the Point players.  Back then, the field was grass and not fenced.  Deer were a common problem.

SJU grounds crew was awesome. Several of us would whistle the "Imperial March (Darth Vader's Theme)" from Star Wars when we would see Br. Mark's bright red Ford pickup truck (aka "the red rocket") coming.

I got some terrible duties during the summer, but once football season rolled around, Br. Mark treated me pretty darn well. :)  I spent a lot of time helping Rich Froehle paint the football field.  The worst job I ever ended up doing was shoveling the "sludge" from the wastewater tanks when they were doing some repairs!

Oh, and those 3:00 a.m. shoveling calls SUCKED!

I was not disappointed to move to my post at the Great Hall Info Desk.  ;D

Oh yeah, to be sure, there were some days where the work was pure drudgery. Going to work in the SJU Athletic Media Relations office after my sophomore year was a nice change.

His older brother Chuck graduated in '57 and was 3 time All Amercan Guard at 6'1'' and 220.
He was drafted but I'm not sure if he ever played in the NFL.
