I got my first doe yesterday, so I have "earned my buck". It's kind of twisted in a way, as usually any where else in the state, you have to shoot a buck on your first deer if you want to hunt antlers. It was a balmy -3F when we went in the field this morning.

Nice!  Good luck.  I was pheasant hunting on Friday afternoon and spooked the biggest buck I've ever seen in person.  It was a beast!

It was nice to have 10 PAT kicks go through the uprights however the one 28 yard field goal attempt was nowhere close. Maybe after getting a few weeks of practice in that will improve.

I'll take the PATs.  FGs are gravy, at this point.
But I like gravy!!

So do I, but FGs only matter if you have issues punching it in from the red zone...oh, wait.  :o

MIAC Football Players of the Week

QuoteMIAC Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Colin Kummer
Saint John's University
Jr. | Kicker
Hastings, Minn.

Colin Kummer made his 2019 debut by tying the single-game MIAC record for successful extra point conversions with 10 in the Johnnies' win over Hamline on Saturday. Saint John's entered the contest having made only eight of its last 16 PAT attempts and went 0-for-3 the previous week in a 19-18 overtime loss to Concordia. Kummer previously suited up as a quarterback in 2017 and moved to defensive back in 2018 before transitioning to kicker this fall.

I played, and now have a son. My wife and I struggle with this. Full tackle started in 3rd grade. He asked a little bit about FB in 4th grade, and got our permission to play this year in 6th grade. They did a pretty good job with safety, but it's still an uneasy feeling.

Just getting back to this now.  We have a 2nd grader.  He's very much interested in playing.  As of now, I will let him play, but I don't think he needs to start tackle football at such a young age.  We'll do some flag football for a few years.

I've never had a diagnosed concussion (pretty sure I've never had one), but as I close in on 40, I sure can feel the effects in my knees and hands/fingers (and I was fortunate enough to enjoy Gagliardi's philosophy).  You'd better believe I'd go back and do it all over again, though!

Me too. I was afraid the 2 missed field goals might cost him the award..

Sure wish he'd come back a week earlier.

Parks is 65 yds shy of the UST career record. It'd bode well for Bethel if we could deny him the record Saturday. No easy task, Parks is the most complete back in the MIAC the last several years.

Re: Kummer as ST POTW ... well earned. And while it would have been nice for SJU (and Bethel) if they'd found him a week earlier, all that matters now is that you've got him for the stretch run.

No need to worry about football for 2nd graders, or the youngsters in general (IMO).  The kids run around, grab onto each other, and fall down together.  There isn't any real hitting for several years.  The thing to worry about as they get older is if they get uneducated coaches who don't know how to teach proper techniques and spend too much time hitting.  My kids played football through high school/college and I worry more about the DNA I gave them than the football hits they took.  And like most of us, they loved their playing days and made some great friends.

Right.  So, what's the point of rushing them into "tackle" football?  I'm of the opinion that kids these days are getting sport specific way too young, and so many parents fall into the "well, if he/she doesn't start in 1st grade, he/she will never catch up to the other kids."  I'm all for letting kids be kids and letting them try out whatever they want (Unless it's hockey.  No hockey in my household).

I'm not saying 2nd grade football should be tackle (I actually think that's too young for tackle), my message was not to worry about concussion/brain injury at that age (IMO).  A primary goal of every 2nd grade football coach should be to make it fun and have every kid want to play football the following year.  Lose a kid at a young age and he may never come back.

I agree that sports have become to specialized and it is being driven by the parents. Kids should be exposed to multiple sports growing up and 2nd grade is way too early to start tackle football IMO. Heck, we didn't have tackle football until 7th grade when I was in school.

Several towns around here are going to flag/shell hybrid gear for 3rd/4th - similar to a thud practice. I'm kinda hoping that creeps up into 5th/6th as well. My son's 5th/6th league this year did not punt or kickoff, but they still hit more in practice than I cared to see.
