If I was just looking at roster without knowing the school name, I would guess it was a Wisconsin state school. The elimination of football at SCSU might benefit WIAC schools more than anyone else.

SCSU definitely doesn't draw a ton of talent from central MN, though I can recall a handful of SCSU --> SJU transfers.  Currently, OL Karl Rude and DL Nick Jensen started off at SCSU.  Kyle Gearman was a Husky, I believe.  Current LB coach Matt Darling started his playing career at SCSU (though I tried to convince him otherwise).

I need to go back and re-read the article, but I believe it said that SCSU was going to continue to pay the scholarships. So would a player need to go to a school that provides scholarships?

They'll keep their scholarship if they stay at SCSU not if they transfer.

I think, Baldini, what he's trying to say is that he was ... mistaken in 2007 when he said he had never registered. :)

Hi everyone, been reading this board for probably about ten years, never registered though.  Went to St John's in the late 70's (did my major at the Midway and La) and still follow the team religiously.  Living in Fairbanks now so if there are any other fans up this way give me a shout.  Bennie, if I remember right you are from Slayton, I grew up in Currie, give us back our courthouse!  Go Johnnies!!!

Nope, that does not appear to be it Pat.  ;D

Two Warhawks, Chip and Biff, were taking an important final exam. If they failed, they would not allowed to play against the Johnnies on Saturday. The exam was "fill in the blank" and the last question read, "Old MacDonald had a____."

Biff was stumped -- he had no idea what to answer, but he knew he needed to get this one right to be sure he passed. Making sure the prof wasn't watching, he tapped Chip in the shoulder. "Chip, what's the answer to the last question?"

Chip laughed, then looked around to make sure the professor hadn't noticed. He turned to Biff and said, "Biff, you're so stupid. Everyone knows that Old MacDonald had a FARM."

"Oh yeah," said Biff, "I remember now." He picked up his No. 2 pencil and started to write the answer in the blank. Then he stopped. Tapping Chip on the shoulder, he whispered, "Chip, how do you spell farm?"

"You are really dumb, Biff, that's so easy," hissed Chip, "Farm is spelled 'E-I-E-I-O'."

I'm not sure how the hell this happened, and I don't really care, but my karma is currently at +623/-623. Does this mean that the Johnnie Smokefest has been officially squashed?

I may have missed it, but I have not seen it posted yet. The conference part of the 2020 football schedule is on the MIAC website.

Just finished teaching a course at SCSU this evening; have a football player and coach in the class itself- it was a very rough day in the athletic department and for them particularly. I really feel for them. Given that the SC Times  had a well-researched article within 30 minutes of the announcement, it was clear that they had advanced notice- while the players and coaches got shown the door unceremoniously.

There were 97 players on the roster. The NSIC allows 32 scholarships (I think) but SCSU only paid out the equivalent of 20. Now, they divide scholarships between players, but that's not a ton of scholarship money per player in most cases.

Just about all the players had already joined the transfer portal.  The player in my class was very open and honest indicating he'll be gone in a week and was already looking to sublet his apartment near campus.  Opposing coaches were already following them on Twitter.  It's a crazy place right now.

At the end of the day, today was bad for football. If this happens in a good economy, wait until things turn south.

Don't have a lot to add to this discussion about Saint Cloud cutting football. I shared a couple of years back that I went to one of their games because one of our suppliers out of Chicago had a son on the team as a freshman at the time. This student did only have a "half-scholarship", though he had a student worker job that was guaranteed so he could cover his costs. From what I remember of the game, which they lost I think, that they would fit into the MIAC as a squad. What those current players will do is anyone's guess, as there are many options out there, as has been already mentioned.

I don't expect SJU to reap many benefits from this. A half scholarship plus a work study job can cover the $8,000 in tuition. That 8 grand won't even cover a fifth of what the total cost is at SJU.

Surely not, but 1-3 guys may have been on the fence, and this could be the impetus.  ;)

If they have anybody worth offering, it sounds like an area UST/Caruso could pounce on?

I'm honestly wondering how their recruiting is going now with the uncertainty of the program.  D3?  D2?  D1 non-scholarship?  D1 scholarship?  That has to make it a tough sell, I would think.
