Congratulations St. John's on an incredible season and a great performance in a hard fought game today.  Jackson Erdmann is indeed a truly special talent.  But this St. John's team was no one man show. They are just flat out good. This is one of maybe a handful of games I've attended where it actually felt like a privilege to be there. Much respect to the entire Johnnie program.

Just got home in St. Paul from Whitewater. What a game. Those of us in the Johnnie stands we're SURE Erdmann would pull it out.  Not meant to be

(I posted this over on the Pool C Board as well) We've got ourselves a Pool C Stagg Bowl. Interesting. Gotta wonder how this will all play out next year, and the coming years, as Pool C teams are selected in the future.

Congrats to the Johnnies on a great run. Tough way for it to end, this team was Stagg capable. Erdmann was brutal to play against, but awesome to watch. Hope he gets a look at the next level! I also really appreciate Gary. He's done a great job putting his mark on SJU without ever distancing himself from the great tradition he inherited.

Congrats to the Johnnies on a great season.

I know it fell short of what you wanted but I can think of about 246 teams  that would have loved to have had your record and made it to the semi-finals.

You are not just a 2019 football team. St. John's is a great Catholic  University, with a terrific tradition
of academic achievement. And, by the way, a hell of a football "program".
You'll be back next year. You lose some standout players but, as we say at Mount Union, "Next man up!".

Those of you that know me , know I'm a huge St. John's fan. So, while I share your disappointment, I also share your joy in who you are!

For 2020 - GO JOHNNIES! 🏈 🎓
I'm old! I get mixed up and I forget things! Go Everybody! 🏈 ☠

Heck of a season for SJU. It was a pleasure to watch a generational talent like Erdmann.

Two other random thoughts:

-The SJU kick returner who put his foot out of bounds and touched the ball is one bright dude. It's one of the more obscure rules in football, and he absolutely knew what he was doing in that situation. Smart kid in a high stakes situation.

- Can they stop building an East Region around East Region teams please. Every year they look like a pretender and take away the opportunity for us to see a better team deeper in the tournament.

Nice crowd from SJU.  Your fans follow you.  Congrats on your season.  Erdmann was every bit as good as you've said.  It was an exciting game. Good luck in the future

Routinely during MIAC play the concession stands at hosting schools are wiped out before halftime because they always underestimate the Johnnie Nation traveling 75 miles for a game  ;D
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Yes, that was a smart play on his part, if he really knew the rule, but I will give him the benefit of the doubt as kick returners should know the rules. But does anyone know the logic behind the rule? Why should the kicking team be penalized for kicking the ball out of bounds when the ball doesn't actually go out of bounds? The returner controls whether he goes out of bounds, not the kicking team, so I don't understand what this penalty is supposed to prevent, as penalties generally prevent one team from gaining an advantage. This penalty just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Interesting.  I didn't know the rule and was a bit confused by the call.  ;D

I absolutely think the committee got it wrong and Whitewater should have been left at home in the playoffs and not been in the semifinals yesterday!  :D

It definitely shows what everyone has said for years. We know there are top teams in the top conferences who could go on long runs if they were in the tournament. St. Thomas, Bethel, who knows what they could have done. Look at how Concordia battled Whitewater close and beat Johnnies. That said, I still think D3 format is plenty fair. Teams know what they have to do to ensure their spot. And if you don't win the conference, yeah, it will be nail-biting time waiting to see if you get in. And worthy teams are undoubtedly left out. Teams that could win playoff games...and a national title. But no matter the format, deserving teams would be left out. I think the committee generally does a good job and the format is just fine (obviously my feelings on this will change the next time SJU is 9-1 and left out of the playoffs!)

Have seen it just once below, but a lot farther from the pylon. Was hoping during review that it would be applied right.

Explaining it to Mrs. Repete wasn't easy. But did not want to leave it to the World Wide Leader analyst who at one point said UWW's first eight points came from "a pair of field goals and a two-point conversion"?!?!

The rules application is just a side effect of the idea that the ball is considered out of bounds if a player touching it is out of bounds. It wasn't really designed with kickoffs in mind per-se.  You have to maintain the ball out of bounds concept consistently across all situations of the game or you could get some weird exploits.

For example If that rule didn't exist a player could be standing out of bounds and bat the ball back in bounds to his team mate potentially. And if you went the other way and said well if a ball crosses the sideline then it's considered OB, sideline catches wouldn't really work. Football had to make a rule about how to determine the ball's status and unfortunately you get some slightly unfair penalties as a result.

First of all, batting a ball is illegal so that should be a penalty. Secondly, you could just say if a player is out of bounds and touches a ball that is in bounds, then just whistle the play dead (in which case I would award the ball to the last team who had possession of the ball). Seems more logical to me than penalizing the kicking team when the ball doesn't actually go out of bounds. Just seems the current rule unfairly penalizes the kicking team.

Could someone delete these Sager posts please?  I mean really.  Come on.  Post somewhere else and let us have this place today.  Far out.

Nope. And I'm not sure why you guys felt the need to jump down his throat. Sager didn't use any special privileges to post on this board.

If I had caught this last night, to be honest, I'd have locked the board. Why are we gang-tackling a poster?
