I do find it rather curious that I made a statement regarding another poster elevating a team to Stagg Bowl contender status using a "what if" scenario supposing a victory if not for a penalty....and in less than one hour my smite number grows by over 50.  I have posted here for years and have thrown more than a few fire bombs at other posters and questionable teams....And my Karma gets clipped by nearly 27% for that post?  445 prior posts and 27% of my smite comes after I post that.  I want to applaud the weak sauce snowflakes that I offended by questioning the position being pushed by foreign board hijackers.....Pat should be embarrassed by this self appointed board monitor.

Maybe his numbers were screwed up, but it's hard to believe that on a tight board a negative blast like that would take place

Pat, what I saw was fairly straight forward....I responded to a post of Greg Sager where he was challenging the assertion made by another poster that there were three Stagg Bowl worthy teams.  His position was that for but one bad penalty call at the end of the Wheaton game, they would have been a fourth Stagg worthy team.  My post pointed out that the PAT would have tied the game and led to overtime, with no guarantee of a Wheaton victory...I ended my post by congratulating SJU on their season....within an hour of posting my smite number increased by 55....seems more than a little odd that a post without anything truly controversial or snarky would prompt that kind of response....particularly given what appeared to be mostly usual MIAC posters passing along thoughts about the well played game between SJU and WW.  Maybe it was just a random coincidence that people were on the MIAC Board looking to smite anyone that posted...

Or you remembered wrong.

When someone complains about karma, though, as I think someone referenced earlier this week, they tend to get negative karma, and I do see minus-14 in the past 24 hours. Of course, from 14 different people -- because that's how the karma function works.

I don't really want to rehash this. Nevertheless, just for the record, what you stated here is not accurate.

This is my initial post, made in response to emma17's "three Stagg Bowl quality teams" post:

Great game and great season SJU.
In my opinion, there is no question the Johnnies are a Stagg Bowl team.
It just happens that 2019 has three Stagg Bowl quality teams.

Four of 'em, not three. Wheaton beat North Central pretty decisively earlier this year, and the Wheaton vs. SJU game was essentially decided on a bonehead celebration penalty that bollixed up the decisive PAT attempt.

Note that:

1) There is no conditional here. I didn't say "for but ...". My assertion is that Wheaton is in that same Stagg-quality neighborhood, without condition, based on the evidence at hand; and

2) I stated that the other part of that evidence is Wheaton's win over North Central, which you did not mention. Wheaton beat NCC by two touchdowns, outrushed and outpassed the Cardinals, sacked Rutter seven times, and averaged over two yards per offensive play better than the Cardinals managed. The Cardinals fans who posted on the CCIW board on or after the Little Brass Bell game was played all conceded that Wheaton was the better team that day.

3) Again, I was not "supposing a [Wheaton] victory if not for a penalty". I said that the PAT attempt was decisive, and, again that's not the same thing at all as saying that Wheaton would've won if not for the bad penalty. The dictionary definition of "decisive" is "having the power or quality of deciding; putting an end to controversy; crucial or most important". The missed PAT was all three of those things (the "controversy" in this case being the outcome of the game). I also said that the game was "essentially decided" by the penalty, which it was. "Decided" is not necessarily a win-or-lose binary; in this case, it only would've been decided if Wheaton missed the PAT, which of course is what happened.

I have no explanation for what happened to your karma numbers. But, as Pat said, I have no ability whatsoever to affect anybody's karma, aside from the same applauding and smiting powers that anybody else with over 200 posts has -- and, as I said, I've never used the smite button on anybody, including you.

For what it's worth, I agree with everything you said. You didn't put any qualification on Wheaton having to beat SJU to be considered a Stagg worthy team. And some people's idea of 'decisive' is a bit misconstrued. The missed PAT did indeed end up being the decisive factor in the SJU win. A made PAT would not have been decisive, but the missed PAT was.

From a middle-aged Cobber that still upholds the proud Cob tradition of flipping the bird to Collegeville when passing on I-94, I was really really sad to see the Johnnies go down yesterday in an incredible game with Whitewater. I was rooting hard for them to join Minnesota State as another Minnesota team playing in a championship. That team was so fun to watch and is a great example of what top-notch D3 athletics is all about. I was 100% sure Johnnie Magic would take over in the final drive, but alas, a very tough Whitewater team and some bad luck had something else in mind. It was a fun run. Congrats to Whitewater.

Lest we forget already 'The Machine', UMU was clearly a fifth Stagg-worthy team this year, having lost to NCC only because the Cardinals had the ball last!  That game, even if in week two, was never over until it was over.

OldAuggie

What a great game to watch yesterday from an outside fans perspective. My college buddy and I wanted the Johnnies to win but like many of us, were denied by that pesky UW-W interception!!

Congrats to SJU for a great season and good luck to Whitewater in the Stagg Bowl!!

Stagg worthy offense, anyway. Giving up 59 to NCC weakens their case.

Actually Mt Union had the ball last Ypsi. Unless you count the last 2 seconds after the 4th down INT in the endzone. Mt Union couldn't get it done on their last 2 possessions, either of which would have tied the score.

Sigh.  Less than an hour after SJU had been eliminated, a UWW poster graciously made an off-hand comment that there were three Stagg worthy teams meaning that the victory over SJU was a thread-bare thing.  A simple, gracious comment made in victory to the losers.  Oh, no, we can't have any time to come down and let people who were just hyping about a big game have their moment to discuss it.  No, no, no!  We need to hijack the narrative or some other bulls**t.  Well, stick your narrative up your clacker.

And now we sit 24 hours later continuing a huge discourse over when teams are to be included as Stagg worthy.  It's a valid conversation.  But not here and not then.  We just suffered a frickin' heartbreaking loss.  Give us a damned hour, eh?  Let us settle a little, make our comments about the heroic efforts of the teams, etc. Compliment seniors and all that.  And then start this who gets to be Stagg worthy discussion.

As a Mount Union fan I concur, hard to think a defense capable of giving up 50+ is championship caliber.... hope NCC proves me wrong since they gave up 52 in that game lol.
