Damn.  New York and California in lockdown.  This had better be a horrid bug because we're implementing a level of destruction on our own that is incredible.

Edit: And I sure hope my confidence in the US medical system is well placed.
Add Illinois to the list, to be announced soon.

Looking at the latest overview maps of the states and you can see where it is concentrated so far - Seattle, San Francisco, LA, Las Vegas, The twin cities, Chicago, Detroit and NY - going roughly West to East. All major international airport cities. There are other areas like Miami and Atlanta not far behind. The fly over in the central US so far is unscathed. Isolation is key.

For all practical purposes we are almost shut down. My local liquor store is still open (although they are sold out of Everclear) and since I was thinking of you I got a bottle each of some kinds of Yalumba and Jacob's Creek.  :)

I'm a member of the Treasury Wine Estates's Friends and Family special sales group.  Big discounts and free delivery right to your door on the best labels of Australian wine.  Both Yalumba and Jacob's Creek are in the Treasury stable.  They have a corner on about 70% of the Australian wine market.

So I won't run out of the grape nectar.  I wish they delivered beer.  Lion Nathan does beer and wine.  But the wine isn't as good.  Dilemmas.

Fremantle v Essendon*

(The * is because they still have players who took part in their systematic doping program)

EDIT: Adelaide v Sydney.  Quite a good game.

Goad Coast v Port Adelaide.  Complete snooze fest.  Not even worth the cheap shots.

Greater Western Sydney v Geelong.  Any Hawks fan would enjoy these.

(Hawks play Brisbane this afternoon.  Tough game.  Getting nervous.)

I hate to say it (because I'm afraid I'll get yelled at), but I've think we've crossed the massive overreaction threshold.  The same people are vulnerable to this bug as were two weeks ago, namely the aged and infirm.  And while we most definitely need to make sure we protect the vulnerable, I'm not sure global economic shutdown is the proper approach.  In fact, I'm certain it isn't.

And as I said at the beginning, I would hate to live in a third world country (or Italy) where the health system is suspect (or surrounded by the second oldest population in earth after japan.  23% of Italians are over 65).

Anyways, I'm going to work and I'm keeping everyone in my company focused on customer delivery. Because we've got to keep paying the bills and don't have the luxury of the media panic merchants of simultaneously declaring we're all going to die and it's hopeless while getting a pay check.

(Apologies in advance if I offend anyone, but shutting down the economy will prove far mar damaging that this bug ever will. I'll check out now because I don't want to start a fight on these boards. I may delete this post upon reflection.)

Things in good old South Dakota are not quite as bad as the rest of the country (yet). Probably helps the the entire state population is around 800,000.  I too still have to trek to work each day as i am considered essential.  I do have to say that running a prison during an event like this brings up new and interesting problems.  Where to set up a quarantine area for infected inmates,  which officers will be chosen to watch these inmates (basically quarantined with them while wearing PPE).  will they get hazard pay for this task. Dealing with upset family members of inmates threatening lawsuits and even bodily harm because we shut down all in person visits,  the list goes on and on.  I am ready to get back to normal,  the only bright spot for us is that our industry is recession proof.  In fact we thrive during a recession. Everyone stay safe

Damn.  The two largest states just announced stay-at-home orders and the AFL is shutting down for two and a half months.  They could have kept going but decided to exercise "an abundance of caution."  I would have said we're putting our boys in bubble-wrap and keeping on.  Someone needs to show some leadership and keep powering through this (with all necessary precautions) rather than just rolling over.  Whatever.

Here's North Melbourne v St Kilda.

Im assuming this is the article I saw numerous "takedowns" of highlighting the problems before Medium saw fit to take it down for violating their standards?

Correct. An article written by a "political strategist", not scientist, not physician, not epidemiologist. He used us testing numbers in their frequently, all the while not acknowledging the severe testing shortage. There is lots of info out there on the web right now. Hard to decipher fact from fiction.

If you are going to read that article, at least read this thread which addresses the many problems with his numbers.

What gave you an indication that I wouldn't be eager to read that thread?  I assume you were equally eager to read the article.

I read the thread.  He raises some interesting questions but you have to admit its more a rant than pointing out any problems.  I would much prefer a paper that explains better modelling.
