Just looked at some of the data for the land down under and it looks a bit different than most of what we have seen here. Iowa and Minnesota both report about as many or more confirmed cases than all of Australia, obviously with some significant variations within the states/country. Particularly notable is how much more testing has occurred in Australia relative to the number of cases, with around 1% of all tests as positive vs over 10% here.

Up until about a week ago, I knew people here with likely cases that could not get tested, that has started to turn a corner here which is a good sign for our ability to identify problem areas and make good local decisions that would have been difficult not too long ago.

Enjoy getting back to normal life with your family Oz. I hope it will stay that way for y'all.

I think what OZ, and I, are trying to say is that there is room for discussion as to what the best path might be, Sweden, for example has not locked down, but has given the populace guidelines which many are following to some degree or another. It so far has meant that the death toll seems to be a bit higher than other similar countries that have followed A MORE STRINGENT REGIMEN. I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL NOT KNOW WHICH MODEL IS BETTER FOR QUITE SOME TIME. Sweden IS HOPING THAT "HERD IMMUNITY" WILL HAVE A BENEFICIAL EFFECT IN THE LONG RUN. WE WON'T KNOW FOR A YEAR OR SO WHETHER THAT IS THE CASE. HEY MAY HAVE A HIGHER spike, but shorter run of cases. (Sorry, I hit CapsLlock and will not reenter text)

The other issue is that far too many (and not pointing to anyone on here) want to virtue signal, and come up with accusations like, "you don't care if people die." They don't seem to want to take into account the deleterious effects of the lockdown, not only economic, but psychological and physical health effects. There should be room for disagreement without ad hominum attacks. Argue the issue not the person.
The truth is we won't know what was the correct action to be taken for another 6-18 months. I hope we can all agree this is not an easy decision for anyone in charge. I would also hope that everyone is rooting for the USA to get through this with as minimal damage as possible, both in lives and economic damage.

Western intelligence agencies appear to be compiling some pretty damning evidence against China and the Chinese Communist Party along with the World Health Organization which echoed China's talking points. The fact that China concealed information from the rest of the world is unethical at best. Locking down Wuhan and not allowing travel to the rest of China and then at the same time allowing millions of citizens from Wuhan to travel to other parts of the world is a frame for mind that I'm not familiar with. I'm not expecting China to pay reparations but they could lose a significant amount of their manufacturing contracts from Europe and North America which very possible could hurt a whole lot more than writing a check.

I pray that the USA can come through this with a better understanding that we need to start making things here again, and not just shuffle paper.

That was not a rant. That was an excellent commentary on what happened, is happening and our wish for the future. Good stuff, 105. And a + K.  ;D

I understand what you really said Oz. We have the same situation. The Governor opened certain businesses like barber shops and salons effective yesterday under strict conditions. I drove through town today and saw many retail shops open that were NOT given the green light. Even though I have extensive experience in health, safety, epidemiology, etc., I will not opine further.

My teenage son, who works a couple of shifts per week at a convenience store in the south metro, reported much more traffic yesterday than any of his other shifts in the past six weeks. In addition, today I went for an 8-mile run along the chain of lakes in Minneapolis and, while crowded, it was more or less possible to give people their space if I deviated from the path a few times. I generally choose less crowded areas, but 8 miles is a pretty long run for me right now and I wanted something more scenic.

We will see how things progress. I don't wear a mask while running but I do when I go out otherwise.

Hopefully the second wave is somehow not huge.

Texas A&M and University of Texas systems expect to reopen in the fall, and A&M says it will play football

Can't keep the human spirit down.  Hook 'em horns!

On Thursday, Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp told all 11 university presidents in the system that they will reopen their campuses next school year and be ready to play sports, a university system official confirmed to The Texas Tribune. Texas Tech University has also announced that it plans to resume on-campus classes in the fall, and university President Lawrence Schovanec told the Tribune that Tech is planning to play sports, too, though it's unlikely either school will be able to bring back sports like football on its own...

SEC spokesman Herb Vincent said, "Our current focus is on preparing to play the 2020 football season as scheduled."

Hey, mate, stick it where the sun doesn't shine.  You can leave the personalisation out of this.  Stay locked quivering in your cave if you want, demonstrating the same courage there that you do here.  It's only because posting has been down that your cowardly attack when you knew I wasn't here see it didn't fall off the front page.

While we are on the topic of proportional response to perceived threats, this was decidedly not proportional. I think you ought to continue your hiatus, friend. I'm concerned about your sanity, more than even most other SJU alums.

Speaking of switching it up, do any of you fish up in Canada? That sure is a tough situation for the camp operators.

I've got a few friends that go up to fly in lodge annually regularly.  I can't imagine what this will do to them.  I need to make a decision fairly quickly about going dove hunting in Argentina next year.  The travel issues are making that a tough decision.  I still am planning on my opening weekend dove in Texas and Wisconsin fishing trips this fall.

Football in Texas is a religion.  I made that joke in a religion class.  At the end of the class it was agreed that not only was it a religion, but high school and some college games in Texas were eerily similar to church services.  I almost feel like the Gaggies need football to feel relevant over the Whorns.  I just can't see many D1 schools with the exception of Rice going a year without football.  It is too much a part of the culture.  I thought I read something where there were plans to play fewer games this year at the FBS level and eliminate all non-conference games.

A virtual Kentucky Derby? Are you serious? I give up! 🍺 😷

I'm struggling without any live sports. Sad that we missed Derby Day yesterday. On the plus side the Fall could be pretty spectacular. The Derby, 3 of the 4 golf majors, college football, nfl football, and an extended MLB post season that rolls into November. I'll do quarantine September - November for that slate  ;D. May be minimal to no crowds at events, but all of that in 3 month time window would be pretty great.
