I do not think that the coaches at any of the divisions will be "flying blindly' with regard to this disrupted year. From what I understand, this will be essentially a reversed year such that what is usually done in spring practice will now be done in the fall, while this uocoming spring will now be what is done usually in August at the start of preseason as far as the number of practices allowed for both. The only difference, again as I understand it, is that a player's year of eligibility will be retained if no more than five games are played.

The dilemma actually lies in the concern about health and injuries i.e. "recovery time" for the athletes in  playing a spring schedule of games as expressed by coaches at all the divisions (regardless of how many, but more of a concern among the upper divisionsof FBD and FCS wtho want to play 10 games, but IMO, this is also a concern for DII and DIII looking at playing only a five game spring schedule) and then turning around and playing a "regular" fall schedule starting as usual in August. That is why some coaches have suggested starting the 2021 season in October, which still means that preseason woul start in September. That still puts a dilemma on how to hold the playoffs and likely the number of games able to be played at all the divisions including FBS with their having to devise their own CFP schedule, which would also be reduced to a degree.

Overall, regardless of what is decided on for these next several months, I don't see college football getting back to the regular routine/schedules until the following year in 2022 if they decide on playing any type of scheduled games rhus next sping in 2021. Of course, we should (hopefully) know what the status is of this coronavirus crisis and have it under control, at keast to acceptable levels and risk. So all that is my opinion currently as well as what I understand how the current proposed process is for this year.i

OAC announces spring football schedule.
If you give a s--t, details available elsewhere.
At this point, I'm not sure I care!
Go "Somebody"! 🏈 🍺 😷

Hilarious, MUC57, my friend! Yeah, like you, right now, I'm not quite sure that I can get excited about any "potential" spring schedule
Although, we are acheduled to do football physicals this Tuesday at the College, so they can start fall (uh, I mean, spring) practice. So I will see how I feel then. Please pray for me that I don't get the covid and that none of our players test positive. Hope you are otherwise doing well.

Wear your N95, wash your hands after each physical, practice universal precautions and you will be fine.  As for the players, fully expect 5-10% to test positive, isolate them for 10 days, and they will be fine.  I hope the fall stays quiet, so the Spring can can bring some form of a football season.....

That is 114 days for the entire academic calendar. (Basically the usual 19 weeks, multiplied by six days, since every week has to have a down day.)

There seems to be a lot of apathy on these boards regarding spring football, but who cares.

I personally am looking forward to all the spring sports at Mount Union, he said, tongue firmly in cheek.

Here's what we'll have:
     1. Football
     2. Men's soccer
     3. Women's soccer
     4. Women's volleyball
     5. Baseball
     6. Softball
     7. Men's lacrosse
     8. Women's lacrosse
     9. Men's track and field
   10. Women's track and field
   11. Men's cross country
   12. Women's cross country
   13. Women's golf
   14. Fraternity beer parties
        Oops. Scratch number 14.

Going to be a fun-filled spring. Can YOUR school match that for drama and excitement?
Wow! As an old alum, I'm going to be pretty busy. Fortunately I only live 5 blocks from the campus. Haven't seen the likes of this in all my years. Boy oh boy. This is SWELL! ???  :o  :P

Real feelings on above ^^^^ post.
I can't get fired up about watching football at 7:00 in the evening in March.
And too many sports. The same field is used for football, soccer and lacrosse. Of course, Fieldturf doesn't mind but, there are timing issues.
Doctors have said spring and fall football is not good for the body. Not enough time to heal. (Thanks, Gray Fox on th NWC board for the reminder).
Are we saying we'll have this virus under control by the spring?
But the die has been cast. Spring football it is, at least in the OAC. Keep your fingers crossed.
In the meantime, Go Everybody! 🏈 😷

MUC57:

Got your PM, and also saw you got mine in reply.

Also, as to your post above, yeah, if that all goes down at all the colleges, it is going to be one very crazy madhouse of a spring for everyone involved. In one sense, I am not looking forward to that. But...we'll all do what we have to do.

As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Texas Ole

Looks like players in the Big Ten want to play.  There have been reports that some administrators were not going to allow football due some other issues such as the player demands we saw from the Pac 12.  I am guessing a few legal departments were worried about the liability in the event of a virus outbreak.  I could also see a few donors get frustrated when they feel they deserve tickets to games over others.  It is a mess, and I don't see it getting better.

There were games in Texas that 2 weeks ago were confirmed as cancelled.  Now they are going to be played.

High school football in Michigan was just cancelled two days ago.  I am not sure why they waited until the very last minute.  While the HCs are, obviously, disappointed, most have made statements they understand.  There were some of the legal issues involved, as you mention, here also, however, as you know, our governor has been much more stingent in regulations/mandates and the MHSAA has essentially been following the same line/her lead.

Regarding the Big Ten, while many of the parents are now getting involved in providing letters and petitions to reinstate the season for this fall in defense of their sons, there is no way that is going to happen.  Again, as you mention, there were many legal issues involved, just not from a medical standpoint either.  Attorneys on both sides of the issues have related it would be a mess in trying to do so.  Also, you may have seen where one of the top cardiologists at the University of Michigan Medical Center has made a statement that he disagrees with the decision to cancel the season, saying it was based on an erroneous cardiac study.  However, there are many other prominent cardiologists and other physicians who have been heavily involved in all this, including treatment of covid patients who disagree with that-certainly that is not new news and not surprising as there has been extreme differences of opinion in all of this as you and all of us already know from following throughout this crisis.

IMO, as I said, I very highly doubt it-there is no way the Big Ten is going to reverse the decision.  Those in charge are not going to allow the athletes and parents to run the programs.  They'll listen, of course, but in the end, the administrations and their respective athletic departments will have the last say-at least that is what those latter groups have been saying and continue to say.  A couple of longtime, well-known "big time" sports reporters in this region have also said the same as well as their summary of what the league administrators have said being that..."as far as the loss in revenue, all the conference members will be in the same boat, even if the actual numbers are different for each school."  Anyway, as most everyone here has commented, there are no right answers in this.  But...we "Press On" and will see what eventually transpires.

Indeed.  If she wins the British Open this week I think she'll officially be the most athletic AO in the family.     :)

Pat:

I finally was able to listen to your and Keith's podcast from last week. I want to congratulate both of you on another excellent podcast. I though both of you provided an exquisite and comprehensive summary of all the concerns, questions, options, and dilemmas that everyone, from fans, to coaches, college and conference administrators, athletic support staffs everywhere) have regarding this entire coronavirus situation and the effect it has had on college football at our DIII level.

Certainly no fault of yours or Keith's, I was slightly disappointed that Coach Deere did not provide you with more specifics about what exactly they are doing in their program right now as to protocols, for example from testing schedules (he mentioned they secured funding for that, but didn't mention from where or who or about how the athletic training/ medical staff handled that and physicals) to how breakdown of practices and quarantine are to or are being handled, etc.. Nor did he provide any specifics as to who exactly they were talking to regarding potential games for this fall other than Trine, of course, and just mentioning in general "some regional NAIA teams." Perhaps he was prohibited from providing more intricate details of some of these aspects, although I don't know why (for example, I and others are aware of the numbers they have already tested). Yet, I thought you handled all of that excellent in being very diplomatic in your interview questions, which, IMO, was/is the right and best way to do so. It will be interestimg to see what transpires for Adrian and Trine as to this proposed fall non-traditional season if it occurs. Athough I know that the HCs, ADs and administrators at both schools want to and their honest intention is to provide the best experience for their players as Coach Deere stated, I know that many people in the league are not happy with them for not going with the other schools in the conference decision.

Anyway, again kudos and thanks to you and Keith for another great podcast and keeping all of us "in the loop.'

Edited for typos. :)
