Catdomealumni.com just posted up a highlight clip of current Hamline offensive line coach (and former Wildcat), Daryl Agpalsa.

Linfield Legend Daryl Agpalsa

Any Duffman clips in that video???  ;)  I remember Daryl being a tough SOB!

I couldn't find the 02 Linfield/SJU game film in the archives when I was pulling tape.  :)  Daryl is a good dude and I'm sure he would love to chat you up before this season's Hamline/SJU game.

Red Dawg,

You are correct they have been. Specifically two top rated running backs are on their way to St. John's this year.

So maybe the QB situation will not be as critical. But remember there was a very good back from last years team that was hurt and he is supposed to be returning. I think his name was "Awe" Now we need to name another back, "Shock" for a dynamic backfield combination! ;)

There was also an offensive lineman that had paid a visit from OHIO??? mentioned in January.  I have not heard anything more about him though.

Must have come to his senses! ;D

That's only supposed to go one way MN to OHIO not the other way around.

You mean MN to Ohio State to MUC because they can't handle the academic rigors of The Ohio State?   :D

Thanks raiderguy.  Seems a little odd, since this team struggled to score points that there is no mention about areas like qb and special team players.   Thank you for the information.

It was a one way street when the gophers were under Glen Mason.  I'd guess most of the ohio recruits including Cupito and Wheelwright were not also being recruited by ohio state.  from wikipedia: James Laurinaitis (wayzata) beame Ohio State's first scholarship football player from Minnesota since legendary NFL coach Sid Gillman in 1930-33.

Either he won't settle for not being the starter and is taking his ball and going home, or else his decision is a result of how the QB situation was handled last year.

More like, how the situation was mis-handled last year. There was a lot of second guessing by fans about the respective merits of the QB's who played last year. But it's real hard for anyone to play when the OC ties one arm behind your back. When a QB is in and gets a rhythm going, gets to the red zone, and suddenly the genius OC starts sending in plays. The offense sputters, and the QB gets blamed for not being able to finish a drive or put up TD's. I'd say it takes more balls to walk away, but it probably beats putting up with that kind of bullsh!t.

I debated over the weekend whether or not to respond to the earlier discussion of the QB situation.  It would appear as though Crees' decision was simply one of physical deterioration.  His shoulder was not healthy enough to take the abuse that comes with playing the position.  I am sure this was a hard conclusion to come to for him, but he should be commended for his leadership and play in his career.

As for taking balls to walk away (Hansel), I could not disagree more.  Out of the 180+ players that play at SJU only 22 start, meaning over 150 of those players bust their a$$es weekly knowing they will not start/play.  They show up, practice, push the starters, compete.  Nobody that I can remember was promised a "Papal appointment" to their position at SJU.  Hansel is no different, the commitment is to the team at SJU not yourself (irrespective of whether or not you feel one of the coaches is screwing you).

There are a number of examples of QBs that stuck it out to their senior year (even when they had been past over as the starter at the beginning of the season) only to be rewarded as all conference players that led their teams deep into the playoffs.  Frankly a player that doesn't/isn't willing to compete without a guarantee is of no value when it matters.

1989- Steve Varley (SR) starts the year as the #2 QB, doesn't complain while backing up Tom Ramboldt.  Ramboldt injures his ankle and is replaced by Varley that leads the team into the Semifinals losing to Dayton.  All-Conference, HM All- American

1993- Will Seiler (SR) starts the year in a battle with two other QBs (Pletcher, Kemper).  John rotates all three in the first half of game #1.  Seiler performs and is given the starting job for the remainder of the season amassing the best single year stats ever.  Leads the team into the Semifinals losing to Mount Union.  All-Conference, All-American, SI Player of the Year

1994- Kurt Ramler (S0) starts the year as the #3 behind Pletcher and Kemper.  A torn ACL and broken ribs lead to Kurt being called upon to run the team mid-season.  Leads the team to the Semifinals losing to Albion.  All-Conference

1999-  Corey Stanger (SR) after a three year (97,98,99) battle to start against Tom Linneman, Stanger starts the season as a TE.  Linneman has his ankle demolished in the second quarter of the UST game, Stanger comes in and leads the team to a win (without having practiced much at QB).  Leads the team to the Quarterfinals losing to PLU.  All-Conference

2002- Ross Denne (SR) after a fierce competition with Ryan Keating in 01 and 02, Ross decides to change positions to TE and starts.  In game #2, Keating's arm explodes into 14 pieces right before Halftime.  At the half, Ross changes into his QB pads, leads the team to scoring 40+ points against Whitewater.  Leads the team to the Semifinals losing to Trinity.  Arguably one of the guttiest players ever at SJU.  All-Conference, HM All-American

Congratulations to the hard working players of UST.  It's good to see the Minnesota boys doing well.

(I had to swallow hard three times to keep breakfast down while typing that.  It ain't always easy to do the right thing.)

Duffman,

Your still not smarting about Larry Kinnard are you? In 20 years I know of only two players that have had any connection with THE OSU. Scott Wolf transfered in the late 80's and Larry. I heard he did have some issues with grades getting in to OSU but he also wanted to play close to home so his parents could see him. I believe his father was very ill at the time.

If you are talking about the myth that MOUNT stocks it's team with transfers..I don't think you want to go there. Nearly all of the players start and finish their careers at Mount. Except when certain players (Kris Kern) from certain schools (St Cloud State...backyard) chose to come and play in Alliance. There were actually two players from MN in that time frame. SJU didn't need an AA DB at the time? :-\
Let's see....Gophers to St. Johns doesn't happen right? Opps I think the name Keating comes to mind.
No one thinks there was anything wrong with that now do they? ;)
Or the list of transfers every year. That's one contest you WILL win. ;)

AO,

Your right Cupito and Wheelwright were not on the short list for OSU. I believe Wheelwright was also from Columbus so it stands to reason the Buckeyes had a pretty good look at him. There was also a LB and two of his buddies that came up from Columbus but it turns out they didn't understand the word "NO' :-[

The wife told me an interesting bit of information this morning as I walked out the door to work.  When she's feeding the kids breakfast and getting them ready for school, she'll often be listening to the WCCO equivalent morning show.  Today they were interviewing a Rat of Tobruk who played bagpipes in the division's band during the Siege of Tobruk where the Aussies held out against Rommel for five months or so in the African desert and denied him the supply line he needed to take Cairo.

What makes this interesting, is that in addition to playing the bagpipes while beating back the Germans and Italians, this guy also played the bagpipes on AC/DC's classic It's A Long Way To The Top, possibly the only tune to hit the airwaves with a bagpipes solo and certainly the only tune with a solo by one of the Rats.

GEE,

I wonder how many pages we have to go back to see the LAST post that had anything to do with stu?

Kind of like the current count of how many days it has been since Michigan beat THE OSU? ;D It is 2000+ and still counting. Ya gotta love it. :o

The worm WILL turn!  Don't forget 1988-2000, when OSU won exactly twice in 13 years. :D

Bring back John Cooper! ;)  Though eventually RichRod will solve the sweater guy. ;D

Mr Yipsi,
Eventually, maybe another 2000 days. ;)

Cooper is available, you could get him cheap. Chances are he could beat OSU since he has a lot of experience in knowing how they loose. RichRod is not the answer but that's ok you can keep him. :-*
