I don't think that seat belts were standard issue in that model car.  What model was that?

When did seat belts become mandatory?  Are they mandated to be retro-fitted in all cars now?

I know that we had to add seat belts as an option for our 1963 Galaxie 500 4-door.

OzJohnnie, you are not painting a picture of confidence with this kicking and punting thing.  Will there be senior leadership in this area in the fall?

Well, according to the roster...

Last year's K/P was Russell Gliadon, a senior.  The other K/P listed will be a sophomore this year, Gerald LeGarde.  So, unless there were hidden kicking talents lurking in another position, it looks like there will not be senior leadership at that specific position.

Is this the position you really want information about or are you trying to zero in on something else?  If you're wondering if an underclassman can come to SJU and make the team at K/P, the answer is yes.  Assuming they are good at that tough skill.  That motherhood statement of mine is true for every position.  If an underclassman is exceptional, then they see time, maybe even start.  It may be a more common occurrence with a P/K since it is such a specialist skill, but it's true across the team, none-the-less.

Now the thing to balance against the difficulty of breaking into the SJU starting line-up as a senior, much less an underclassman, is the fact that SJU and the football program are exceptional and unique.  If one is primarily concerned about starting and seeing playing time, then another school is probably a better choice.  If one is more interested in a rare, exceptional and overwhelmingly valuable experience, then SJU is the only place to find it.  There's a whole lot more to football at SJU than football, despite the success and high standard of the program.

What about special teams, in terms kick and punt returners as well as the place kicking and punting situation?  Will there be a lot of experience in these areas as well?

Ahhh.... kicking.  Yes.  We are always looking for kickers and punters.  With special teamers we're always pretty strong, but the kicking and punting...  It's a tough skill.

OzJohnnie, you are not painting a picture of confidence with this kicking and punting thing.  Will there be senior leadership in this area in the fall?

IMHO  John is not a fan of the kicking game If he has a choice of kicking a field goal or having a root canal done on the side lines by one of the waterboys without any anesthesia using a tongue depressor and an old shoe cleat from the Mount Union game in 1993, he will choose the root canal. :o Kicking is not one of his favorite subjects. Just score touchdowns. and we will deal with the extra point later. Maybe the waterboy can kick. ;D

It's kind of like Woody Hayes and the forward pass. Three things could happen and only one of them is good. ;)

For those of you in the cities looking for Summit Beer, food from Saint Paul restaurants and the opportunity to win fun prizes from Saint Paul busineses, come over to the Summit Brewery tonight for my benefit event for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  $25 donation at the door.  Rumor has it TDT will be lurking looking for easy prey!

Details at www.HelpAdamCureCancer.com  If you can't attend and want to make a contribution, you can do so at the website as well!

I just came from the function and we had a good turn out. Lots of support but Adam can use your help. He is running for Man of the Year for the local cancer society and his votes are the $ he raises to fight cancer. There were lots of good prizes and food and Summit Beer too. The poster child for this year is 6 years old and he has luekemia. He is going in tomorrow for his montly Chemotheropy treatment and he cannot eat for a day or two after because food just doesn't taste right. Along with the fact his daily regiment of pills numbers around 16. So if you have an extra few bucks to help Adam with this battle to defeat cancer please pass it along. The link is shown above and you will see more info on the campaign and how to participate.

Adam is one of our own here on D3, he writes the West columns in the fall and he could use your support. He already heard from several people from the West Coast members so let's get on board.

Thanks.

JR,

Rest easy. Miguel Diaz received is undergraduate degree from St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens, Florida.

In regard to the K/P duties, I believe Russell Gliadon will be back for another year. I was informed at the end of the season that Gliadon had another year of eligibility. This is why he was referred to as a senior the entire '08 season.

Tmerton-

in the 07 game we had a missed kick as well, a chip shot FG but as I remember now, it was a bad snap and hold, not the kick itself that was bad.  In fact it probably does not show up on your stats as a missed kick because after the bad snap the holder (THE Andrew Schmeissing) simply tried to run a fake FG in hopes of salvaging the play.  So I can't pin that one on our kicker, but last year's game was simply awful.  Probably the worst part was that a fair amount of people I talked to after the game thought that the O-line broke down on the FG and allowed penetration.  Apparently when the kicker boots the ball about 4 feet off the ground into our backs, WE need to get out of the way!  But enough about the past.  This year I predict a much better outcome for the rampant lions of St. Olaf!

OzJohnnie, Thank you for the information.  I hear that there are like 160 players on the sidelines for a home game, so I can't imagine that someone can come in and play right away. Also, the school has such a great academic background and a significant cost to attend, It would be hard to vision someone paying like 30 grand a year just so their son could kick at a school  and not understand the experience that you discussed.  Thank you for your insight. I could not imagine going to a school like St. John's and the school experience not being the top priority.

You can see the kick at about the 5:15 mark of the 2008 SJU highlights.  You'll need better eyes than I have to tell where the ball is though; maybe you or Oz can see it.  (Note: There is a HQ mode.)
