I want to thank everyone for the prayers, well wishes and kindness. My sister is doing much better. It will take time to see if she will be able to make a full recovery, but I am hopeful. This last week has been quite a roller-coaster. When I arrived at the hospital she was medically paralyzed, on a ventilator, had a balloon pump in her leg to assist her heart and was on dialysis because of renal failure. Today, all of the machines are gone, they let her take a shower by herself and she is already asking when she can go home. I so appreciate all of your support. ;D

That's great to hear, bennie, and I wish your sister the best luck in her recovery.

As an aside, can I comment on the amazing thing that is modern medicine?  "Medically paralyzed", "ventilator", "balloon pump in the leg[!!!]" for circulation, dialysis and renal failure?  And a couple days later this woman is up and taking a shower?  I cannot help but sit in awe of the things we are able to do that by all rights should be impossible.  Human ingenuity: bound by nothing but E=MC2.

And in other news... I just bumped into another Johnnie down here in Melbourne.  Class of '83.

If the world was any smaller we wouldn't all fit on it.

That is great news. From personal experiences she was definitely in the right place! If you have the choice go Mayo!/St. Mary's. ;)

Bennie, your sister and you will continue to be in our prayers. Hopefully she can be home soon.

The All-Star Game was nice and everything, but I've got a serious baseball jones going after a 5 day layoff. So just for the hell of it, here are some suggestions about the MLB event from one of my favorite Twins blogs:

Anyway, I'm just going to finish by giving my top ways to fix the Home Run Derby. And by "fix", I mean ruin any semblance of credibility, humiliate participants, create general havoc, and increase overall watchability by 300 percent. Feel free to add your own suggestions in the comments.

   1. Mix in exploding baseballs with the real ones. Physical comedy is always good, plus it might make for some good tantrums. Bonus points if the participants are not warned beforehand.
   2. Add some extra-bouncy trampolines around the warning track, giving the kids in the outfield the opportunity to make gravity-defying, home-run-robbing catches.
   3. Make players take Jell-O shots for every out they make. Drunk people + sports = hilarity.
   4. All ties should be decided by mechanical bull riding. Or real bull riding. Or bocce ball.
   5. After a ball has been hit, allow other participants to attempt to shoot it down with crossbows. Sure it increases the chances of someone being killed, but what's an All-Star Break without potential fatalities?

Good news, bennie.  Your sister will remain in our prayers.

I like the exploding ball idea, Fins.

Sad news!  My condolences to the Salvatos.  The entire family was a Johnnie football fixture.

Prayers from out family for the Salvato Family. Although I did not know him well he was always at the games and on the field afterward to share in the excitement of the day. I enjoyed talking to him about football.

Well, it's taken over two-thirds of the season, but Hawthorn have finally started to come good.  After 16 rounds they sit at .500.  They must win all 6 remaining games to make they playoffs with next week against league standard Geelong.  Two more weeks after that it's a game against the unbeaten St Kilda.  So the run home will be very difficult... but last night Hawthorn finally hit championship form in a demolition of Collingwood by 45 points, and the game wasn't that close.

With pride, I can finally offer some fantastic highlights from the 2009 season: Hawthorn v Collingwood

Flash;

Currently drinking.  On second pint of Pure Blonde.  Not yet ready to waltz with a dude in a giant baseball costume, but with luck that point isn't far off.

If you can't ignore an insult, top it; if you can't top it, laugh it off; and if you can't laugh it off, it's probably deserved.
