I believe the norm in radio coverage of D-3 football would be one of these:

1) One or two announcers on a (meaning 1) local am station close to the school, doing home and away games unless the away is several states away, then no coverage.

2) The college FM with students doing the broadcasts. Home and conference away games only. (maybe)

3) College students doing the home games on the internet only.

4) Hat in hand begging anyone, in any form, to please cover the games!

So, how do those options look compared to the Johnnies network?

I think it's a mistake for Johnnie fans not to appreciate what they have going on in radio coverage. And yes, it's due to the great following the team has. That's why there are sponsors and therefore why there is a network. I would suggest a thank you to the broadcast station members of the Johnnies radio network and patronizing their sponsors would be more appropriate than minor complaints about the broadcasts.

Many other DIII radio programs suck and are a half a step above a student project.  Ours is professional and sounds like it.  Money.

Many other small town radio stations are really struggling and have a very hard time making a buck.  The Bear does well enough off Johnnie football (and basketball) that they can cover hockey as well with professionals rather than the freshman class of acne, inc.  Money.

The Johnnies have a boundary-rider (side-line color commentary, Aus style) for goodness's sake.  Money.

There's only one way to get that money: commercials.  So while I lament the missed play (and have surely commented on it), I don't want to see the money spigot dry up.  The hair-brained MIAC officials won't make the time and the responsibility for the decision surely rests with them.  More frustrating, is that almost assuredly the reason for their negative answer is that other programs could not benefit as well.  How is Augsburg going to fill 90 seconds?  Student broadcasters reading the alphabet?  The thought occurred to me this last weekend after a missed play that the players should walk the ball back after a score, fumble it around, trip a bit and generally cause a delay.  If the officials won't do it, maybe the Johnnies can take up that job as well.

Its mostly a problem with NCAA rules I am sure.  By rule there is a 60 second time out for after a score and the ready for play for the kick off.  Many times radio stations play two 30 second commercials.  The broadcasters don't get the commercials going directly after the scores because of comments and then with two commercials they run over.  I don't know to many small college stations that get it back on time.  It's the nature of the beast.  It's not up to the officials to delay so that the commercials get done.  It's their job to enforce the rules and officiate the game.  If you want changes made lobby the NCAA to change it to a two minute time out.

We Johnnie fans are extremely lucky to have the high quality radio coverage that we have of our football team.  It is an extremely professional production with outstanding broadcast talent.  When I am not able to attend the games it's the next best thing to being there.

I rarely miss the post game show.  It's a great way to wind down from a Johnnie game.

It's very clear that VOJ and the rest of the team do not approach this as merely a job.  The professionalism, enthusiasm, preparation and commitment all come through loud and clear.

Thank you for a job well done.

I think another shout out should go to WCCO-AM for their "College Football Review" on Saturday afternoons. They cover all levels of college football including game reports on the MIAC and even the WIAC.

Two seasons ago, I called in to give a report on the Stout-Whitewater game after sitting in the rain at the game all afternoon with son of BDB. I needed to get some dry clothes on before heading out to the post game party and some Hamm's.  ;)

No sooner did I get off the phone/radio than SamWill47SJU calls me and says " you've made me late for 4 o'clock Mass! I heard BDB and sent my family into church and listened to you!"  ;D

SamWill47SJU has been missing from Post Patterns for awhile, but I know he reads it regular. Funniest thing is he has 2 sons named Sam and Will, and his wife has no clue why he suggested those names to this day.  :D

I think Touchdown Tommy should just write a big check and make all the problems go away.

That's an absolute classic ...  K to you and 47 should he return.

All I ask is that you give out the game score more frequently.  When I can't make it to games I am often assigned  a "Honey Do" for the day.  As much as I try to follow the game I am sometimes called away from the action for number of minutes.  I'd love if they had real-time scoring for my Blackberry!  I wonder who they could get to sponsor that???
Keep up the good work.

As someone who rarely gets back to Minny, I am tremendously appreciative of the job the SJU crew does. It's hard to imagine a better one in d3. I agree with Faunch, tho, getting the score a little more often would be great.

The great Red Barber used to give out egg timer to young radio guys. That advice is still good today.

Who ever is changing the poll has to reset the picks when you change the question.  I'm currently voting for Carleton for best program but I don't think I have actually cast a vote for about three questions now.

(Now, who will be the smart ass that flips USTD and CC in the list?)

Funny I just got that suggestion from my Dad who tunes in on the Internet in Wisconsin, I try to say it after every first down, sometimes it does not work that well, believe it or not you have hit on the number one issue that is brought up at every broadcaster seminar or camp that is run, saying the score enough...might be redundant to you but its really important to listeners like you who can only catch parts of the game.
Thanks

BDB: Great to hear from you this morning!  Looks like I have some catching up to do!
As I told you this morning, I am off to Notre Dame with Will, Sam, and Holly (who I have now nicknamed Monster so she can fit in) this weekend.  I remember listening to your call on the WCCO Football Show!  I will be REALLY impressed if while driving back from South Bend Saturday night I hear you on some Sirius Sattlite Radio Talk Show!

Shout out to Gig Harbor Cat...it has been years!  Still wear my Linfield Hoodie with pride from our 2003 bet!  Hope all is well in the Great Northwest!

GO Johnnies!!!!!

Time for a beer commercial?  How about one from the "it's so stupid it's good" department?

I love to see any DivIII program get good media.  But the last thing I ever want to see is a radio time out at a DivIII football game.

Does St Johns have a video web cast?

I could not agree more. I would like anyone out there to sight an example of a better offering for any other D3 school.......Or D2 for that matter. How does St Cloud State do when it comes to broadcast coverage....or better yet attendance. My guess (and it is that) is SJU kicks their A$$ on all points. If it weren't for the BEAR how would you hear the SJU games unless you take the day in front of your computer and listen to some student run (nothing wrong with that, MUC does it) but...it's students doing play by play and color.  Please ....give away a pizza and keep Mark and Brian. I also know a number of people who attend the games......and listen to the broadcast. AHHHHHHHHHHH! They must go stark raving mad at the commercial overload they get. But haven't seen it affect anyone yet. I quite honestly tune out the commercials or find them humerous and enjoy the game. Haven't missed a kick-off yet. I don't remember every missing out on a meaningfull conversation with the person next to me because someone was getting a free hot pizza delivered to their seat. Honestly I am pissed because I have never won one! ;D

COME TO THE FRICKIN' GAME AND ENJOY!

Keep up the fabulous work guys!
WELCOME TO THE MACHINE!
