MIAC revises policy on honoring redshirts
Posted 9/17/2009 10:05 PM CDT on sctimes.com
The presidents of the MIAC schools have voted to revise the conference's policy on honoring redshirts athletes received at Division I and II schools before transferring into the conference. Those redshirts will now be honored, meaning athletes affected will have an extra year of eligibility in the conference.
MIAC executive director Dan McKane confirmed Thursday night that the presidents voted to approve the change this week. The change will take effect immediately, meaning those athletes already at MIAC schools who redshirted at their prior schools previously now have an extra year of eligibility should they choose to use it.
"It will be honored even if they've already transferred," McKane said. "So that means even if someone has been at a school like St. John's for a couple of years, but they redshirted as a freshman at another school, they now have an extra year if they want to use it."
Conceivably, McKane said, the change would also allow a student who had used up their eligibility under the old rules to return immediately and re-join a team in the conference if they had redshirted at a previous school and now have a fifth year available to them.
St. John's athletic director Tom Stock said the policy change is a good one for the conference.
"This is a good move for us as a league," Stock said. "I think it will help attract transfers to the conference and it will level the playing field when it comes to the playoffs with leagues like the (Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) and the (Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference)."

I firmly believe this is about to change the face of the MIAC and make it a lot more competitive over the comming years.

Friday NIGHT!!!

I'm hitting the beer this week.  Tired as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore!

One of each, please.

(And, yes, I know a few of those aren't Aussie brews but how much searching do you want me to do?  It's beer-o-clock!)

I noticed the same thing tonight.  You actually have to hook up through the "listen live" link on the right side of the football page at gojohnnies.com.

Gah!  The Thursday update from Frank Rajkowski is rough.  It reads like the after match report of a UFC event - everyone is bloody and wounded.

Aw, cripes.  Frankly, I would be extremely impressed if the Johnnies pull off a win this weekend.  That's rough  :'(  Thankfully, we're pretty deep at the RB spot.

SJU/Cobbers only one day away!!!   Always a great game, I cannot tell you all how pumped I am!!!  Also Cobbers Family weekend so starting today through sunday will be fantastic.  For all of you Johnnies out there its Pitcher day on Sat. so you should all come!  I think most of Cobber Nation will be there after the game, but not before.  Also I would expect some guys to be sporting the beanie, although it most likely will be upper classmen!!

This is by far the best game of the year!  Both D's look very strong and i agree that it probably will be a one scoring win for either side, I say Cobbers by 3.  Anyone from the R-Pack going to make it this year?!  Look forward to cheering against you fellas!  See you all Saturday :)

Personally I am not as concerned about RB as I am about DB where as many as 3 freshmen could see extensive time...not that Cobbers have adopted the spread or Air Coryell tendencies but the last line of defense would lack experience...

On a positive note...the MIAC finally coming out of the dark ages with regards to the redshirt policy is a great thing for SJU...Jimmy Shape and David Burns from the defensive line, runningback Jacob Redding and WR turned DB Mike Bonyge all get a year younger and have more eligibility...very nice!!!  And I have heard it will help with transfers who instead of losing a year will now be able to have their full eligibility.

Is Pitcher Day like "Case Day" at Gustavus?  Could make for a very interesting atmosphere at the Jake...always good to see people adopt the motto "we're not leavin' till we're heavin!!"

Since I left school Cobbers don't go to Mick's after Sat. afternoon games.  They all run over to fargo to the HUB!  Lame! Back in the good ol' days it was mick's on thursday, mick's on friday and mick's on saturday for $3 pitchers all day!

Interesting note on the SJU broadcast.  Having listened in the past, they do an exceptional job, but the commercials are a bit over the top.  VOJ seems like he's in a classic Catch 22.

I know that the guys doing BU's announcing would probably love to have some of the resources SJU crew has at its disposal...but Hoagie and Wendy, you kept me sane out in MD last year with the broadcast!  Keep up the good work guys.

Keith,

Great ATN.

Honorable mention for most thankless jobs...the video guys.  Long hours at practice and on Saturdays, often crummy conditions and almost no credit.  Often, the only time they get acknowledged is when they miss a play.  That, and like many of the others in the Top 10, what they do, if done well, can have a major impact on a team's success.

Dang, I'm very disappointed to hear that.  It hurts Carleton as we don't get transfers from D1 or D2.  I can see why it would be the right move, but then again, if you can't redshirt here in D3 why should you be able to redshirt elsewhere and then come here?  These transfers are getting a year more of practice than anyone else.  Again, probably the right decision, but it definitely helps some schools (SJU, UST) more than others.

Interesting note:  They may have come with this decision a year too late for Augsburg, as I am nearly positive Jordan Berg red shirted at D2 before he transfered to Augsburg.  He would've been able to play this year had they made this rule last year.

Going to check out the Olaf/UST game this weekend if I decide not to make the drive to Northfield to watch the Knights play Bethel.  I'd be surprised if Olaf is within 2 scores at the end of their game.

AO

there's a lot of things hurting carleton, but they still managed to have a pretty good season last year.  This redshirt rule won't change that.

By hurting them I more meant that it helps the competition.  Unfortunately, this year might be tough on them with no seniors, but they can have some good years to come.

Well Micks is always packed on thursdays.... thats a given.  Tonight will be fun cuz its 'bring your parents to micks day.'  I think quite a few guys go after the game on sat, the guys that are old enough in CN will be there after not before, only because of the normal pre-game rituals we do beforehand.  Who goes to the Hub at 4pm?!!!! 3 dollar pitchers ALL DAY at micks!!

Is that any different than "Case Day" at SJU...or any college, for that matter?  ;)
