Was that kick by Gliadon the best regular season field goal since the field goal in 1985 to beat the Tommies, when they had the game in hand, but ran out of bounds to stop the clock? And was the kicker Prybl (sp?)? Heard both on the radio. :)

I'm not trying to start a fight/lynching but....I don't give a crap about the Johnnie game.  Because...

Carleton 17 Olaf 13

Very proud of a young Carleton team.  They played harder and with WAY MORE passion than the Oles.  There was a night and day difference between the two.  I know they almost gave away a sure thing at the end, but in the end, it didn't matter and the Goat is still smiling.

I gotta say this though...Olaf looked bad.  Their QB looked absolutely terrible.  Missing receivers left and right.  They also dropped a TD to start the 2nd half.  Then, when they had a chance to win, they made a horrendous clock management call at the end of the game (With 1:40 left in the game, they got a first at the 18, and spiked the ball.  There was absolutely no reason to do that.  There was PLENTY of time left.  They ended up missing on 4th down.).

I was definitely impressed by Leon Clark though.  He is FAST and quick and athletic.  I would not hesitate to call him the best back in the MIAC.  I only question using him that much with him coming off an injury.  He was the only bright spot on an otherwise bad offense so maybe they had no choice.

Carleton played well, with passion, and deserved to win the game.

Time to take down Auggie Tech.  Can we get Al-Hameed back here to give us more insight into the Auggie Tech weapons???

It broke Mike Schmidt's 47 yard record from 1981 vs. St. Thomas.

Don Pribyl's was in 1985 and was also against St. Thomas, but I'm not sure on the length.  Don passed away about 4 years ago after a bout w/ cancer.  I sent his wife (my neighbor) as message last night that maybe Don was watching the game yesterday and helped kick that tailwind up a notch or two just before the kick.  Did anybody else notice how the wind kicked up just before the play.

It's a combo of Bethel being all over them and having a mediocre (at best) receiving corps.  They weren't running routes with any urgency at all yesterday.  Looked 3/4 speed at best.  Boyle had all day back there, but the receivers would run their routes and stop.  Gotta keep moving till the ball is thrown!  And when Boyle eventually did tuck it and run, the receivers didn't come back and block at all!  I was very unimpressed with the receiving corps aside from Overman--that kid's got good size and a nice set of hands on him.  Hope his injury wasn't serious.

bennie - It looks like we have something other than our Hockey Jones in common. I too am an Australian Shiraz freak. The only bad one I can remember having is a Yellow Tail.

Good luck to your Blue Jackets and Flames this year. Too bad Theo Fleury couldn't make the comeback. I heard he played pretty well, and if he had wanted to stick with it, could have at least caught on with a team, gone to the AHL, and tried to stick around for a call up. Ken Hitchcock was very complimentary of Rick Nash as a captain/team player/leader in an interview I heard today. My Caps stomped the Bruins last night. You can't stop Brooks Laich, you can only hope to contain him.

One of my friends was raving about Yellow Tail the other day so I tried their Cab. I'll pass. I have had better wine out of a box from Trader Joes. 8)

The Caps looked good last night from what I saw. Flames won last night after they scored in the final minute due to some poor puck handling from the Oilers goalie. It warms my heart. :D

Can we please take a pause from the SJU lovefest — deserved, but I need a moment — to discuss the mess that is my Golden Gusties? Thanks for your indulgence. Please consider the following and hit me with some feedback.

  • GAC is 1-3. The win came in overtime against Hamline...and it required an extremely lucky touchdown pass that came after two deflections. Reasonably speaking, we should probably still be defeated right now.
•The Gusties were outgained exactly 2-1 today against the Tommies and were forced to settle twice for field goals when the game was still competitive. A 58-yard touchdown pass saved them the indignity of finishing under 200 yards of offense for the second straight week. Granted the two opponents are undefeated and considered national contenders...but that doesn't explain the once-proud program being embarrassed by the combined score of 83-22 after competing for a conference title last fall.
•First-year head coach Peter Haugen told the Mankato Free Press that he intended to pound the ball all year. The current 2.8 YPC should tell you how well the transition from the spread to the power running game has gone after not recruiting tight ends or fullbacks for the previous three seasons.
  • Through four games, it could be argued that our kicker (3-4 from 40-49 yards) has been the best player on the field for the Gusties. And even he had an XP blocked today.
  • Hoag's blog is the only reason to check the GAC web site right now, but for all the wrong reasons.

If it's too soon to put Haugen on the hot seat — Is it? Remember, it was considered an extremely curious hire at the time — can we at least start looking for a new offensive coordinator? Call me crazy, but I'd rather have some ridiculous flapping on the sidelines with limited success than a pants-sagging gangsta without a clue...

It is a little disappointing to see the direction the Gusties are going. I've always found it more effective when coaches scheme based on their talent as opposed to trying to turn their teams into something they're not.

Too soon.  You gotta give the guy at least two years, probably three.  Particularly if it's a new system that he's trying to put in place.

I would say you have to give him 5 years if he is over hauling the system and team.  He has to be given a chance to at least coach one of his recruiting classes as seniors.  That is the only way you can judge if he is making progress.

Bah! That could be a LOOOONG 5 years  :'(

Anyway, off to see the Twins and then tailgate for MNF. Except for Saturdays, life is good!

You never know...he might get the "Roney" deal ::) ;D

Oh, almost forgot.  Steve Johnson (the SJU player, not the BU coach) is fricking awesome.  He's got quick feet, nice moves, and hits the hole hard.  Fantastic recruit for the Johnnies!  :o

So, who's going to go watch the Twinkies at the Dome on Tuesday?

Assuming the Jays and Toms come through unscathed next Saturday....SJU @ HU and UST hosts the Cobs.....when is the last time a Johnnies/Tommies played a game this big?  I can't remember the last time both teams would have entered a game this late in the season undefeated.

Also...by looking at the various results I don't feel like UST has really played anybody that is any good.  I do believe the Toms are very talented and will give the Johnnies everything and more, however I think they could struggle w/ the Cobs a bit.

I agree that the Cobbers will be the first stiff test for the Tommies.  I reckon the Grand Ave scholarship program will have a real test on their hands.

I also hope that the Johnnies, after such an emotion charged game this weekend, don't fail to come ready to play against the Pipers.  Hamline did very well against a favored Auggie Tech.  Also this is a Hamline team that came "this close" to winning a lot of games last year and were expected to do much better in the cuurent campaign than they are.  The J's need to prepare and play hard to avoid a breakout performance from the Pipers.  They will be very hungry and emotionally pre-pared to "steal" one in 6 days.

Voice was referrimg to our Steve Johnson, as "Stevie." I don't know if that is his preference, or if it was just to differentiate fhim from the Bethel coach.  VOJ?
