I shall note that I spent about 15 minutes @ UST today it was a paltry excuse for a homecoming.  They may well challenge the Jays on Saturday but their homecoming sucked the proverbial ASS!  Why anyone D3 football player would play anywhere other than Collegeville is hard to understand.

::) ::) ::) ::)

Well faunch, comments like that might be a good place to start.

I would like to clarify my comment.  My point was that for a homecoming the environment @ UST was rather blah.  Their "stadium" wasn't even filled and as a I walked across the campus during the 4th quarter it was void of people.  Again it perplexes me why any kid would choose to play college football at school that has smaller crowds than many high school games.  I was at a Cretin/Stillwater game at UST a couple years ago and it was a bigger crowd than UST's homecoming yesterday.
Also...You think I would learn to not come home from a party and post comment after midnight, after I've had a couple.

Thanks for the clarification.

And I have to say, after looking at the D3fb picks from the game, it was pretty pathetic.  The largest school in the MIAC, sitting undefeated and ranked, playing its homecoming game, and the stands weren't even close to full.  That is really sad!

Then again, I think you Johnnie fans have a bit of a skewed perspective.  The benefit of having been good to great for arguably the last 50 years means your fans haven't exactly had to endure a whole lot of adversity.

The Tommies seem to have some really 'fair weather fans,' but then again, SJU could also have fair weather fans.  We just don't know, given that the weather has been 'fair' for half a century.  But, I guess you can't fault SJU or its fans for the fact they've been good for so long.  Just makes me wonder, what would crowds at Collegeville look like if they had a string of losing seasons.  My guess is, they'd still be better than what we see at UST, but it would be interesting to see.

Case in point, FSU looked like it had amazing fans in the 90's...the tomahawk chop would rock that stadium.  Recently though, those fans look really average, not even able to fill up the stadium.  Nebraska on the other hand, just celebrated their 300th consecutive sellout this year, coming on the heals of a stretch of mediocrity that Nebraska hasn't known in a long time.  We now know that FSU fans are a little fickle, while Nebraska's are as loyal as they come.  Just wonder what this would look like at SJU, maybe we'll find out someday  ;)

I think SJU benefits a great deal from its location.  They draw a number of spectators from the surrounding area.  Look around at the number of people wearing garb of area high schools at SJU games.  The Tommies just don't draw from the community and the students have so many other options on Saturdays  Attendance will drop a little for the Olaf and Carleton games at the end of the season however the Olaf game is "family weekend" and that always helps.

I think that GAC and Concordia also do well w/ attendance because of their locations.  The options for spectator sports in St. Peter and Moorhead aren't as vast as in the metro.

Huh? I was at the game and the stands were pretty crowded until late in the 4th when the game was already decided. The seminarians were in in full force and along with a nice chunk of the student body kept the noise coming the whole game. I'd agree we have some pretty fair weather fans here (especially during hoops season) BUT I don't think the crowd on Saturday was as bad as you're trying to make it out to be. Also I know some people who used to play for SJU and they would regularly complain about the fact that though the crowds were big noise was lacking. It's D3 football...it you want 110,000 people go watch a Michigan or Ohio State.

Always nice to see the Johnnies featured on WCCO tv yesterday afternoon with Mike Max. The first touchdown by Redding was featured.

Previously, Max had been touting the Tommies and regularly showing  clips of their games.

I guess that makes two guys named Max who have been touting the Tommies.  When are we going to get our own Max's game report on the USTD - Cobber game?

Clark:  Patience is a virtue.  My column this week was up at 8am CST.  Looking forward to hanging out with you on Saturday.  Hope your guests enjoy the Benedictine hospitality.  Your pal TC will be "calling in sick" on Saturday in order to make an appearance in Collegeville.

In other news, it is snowing in the metroplex.  Is it winter already?  Holy ish start the Christmas/Hanukkah music!!!

TC, you working Friday night?     The only reason I ask is if you want me to pick you up in downtown St. Paul early Sat. morning, I can drive you up and back.     And if need be I have a place downtown you can park you car all day Saturday for free.    Let me know.

LBean: TC's internet access is sketchy these days (unless he is stealing his neighbor's Wi-Fi signal).  Just call him at 867-5309.....

Mayor: The President has made his 2nd executive decision in 3 days.  I hereby decree that you bring forth a jug of Hot Cider/Cocoa (as determined by GrillMaster Veek) instead of the Kool-Aid this week.  The President will handle the booze for said concoction (I am taking requests through Thursday).

Good point on location.  There is no doubt they are the biggest draw in the St. Cloud area.

No one is saying 110,000 people are what make great fans.  But no MIAC teams have stadiums that seat anything remotely close to that.  A better barometer is what percentage of the stands a team can fill out, given the stands should have been built around the idea of what an expected crowd would be.

Furthermore, the pics( http://www.pictureprints.net/albums.php?gallery=3058&photo=0014 http://www.pictureprints.net/albums.php?gallery=3058&photo=0043 ) I saw had nothing close to 'pretty crowded.'

And you must have a really loose definition of 'nice chunk of the student body' when the undergrad enrollment is over 5,500 and you haven't even come close to filling up a 5,000 seat stadium.  Also, keep in mind that what you see in these sad pictures of the 1/2 filled stadium constitutes both teams fans (granted the Cobbers have to travel a long way).

I remember that one...it was over in the 1st quarter.  I think SJU was up 21 or 28 nil.
I don't expect that at all on Saturday.  It will be a close one...the Johnnies don't have that exceptional of a squad and the Tommies are much improved compared to previous years.  One thought is that the Toms could come out too jacked up and make a lot of early mistake while expending a lot of energy.  I think the biggest factor will be if the Jays d-line can help out the corners by putting pressure on the Tommie QB.  If they can't Waldvogel might catch and run wild.  Turnovers also will be huge.  I think it's a pick'em.

Maybe we could order up a dispenser of hot chocolate from food service similar to 2003 style as we did prior to the RPI or Linfield game... that was some cold football weather...

And you should probably keep in mind that those pictures were taken before kick off and at kick off...It's not  hard to see that. Again UST fans are notoriously late/ and no there aren't as many as SJU...I get that. They come late, cheer loud...get to cold and leave. Great fans, no. But I think if you ask players from Concordia, they'd probably say there was a sizable crowd.

So.... fewer than 100k?  I can see why the Tommie fans leave early.  After all, we're not talking about Ohio or Michigan here, are we?

If those pictures are not representative, then show us the better one.  I suspect if there was a better one, then you would have already linked to it rather than appeal to Concordia players to save the argument for you.  If you haven't looked yet then I'm surprised.  After all, it's not like you just creaked into here to say something two weeks before the Johnnie game, unlike to those fair-weather basketball fans, eh?
