Greetings all. Been a busy last few days so I haven't had a chance to keep up on posts. Just curious, does anybody have any idea how the Tommies have been doing attendance-wise? I just figured people here would know. Thanks!

Not too good, but getting better according to my math, but I'm from the planet dick.
If you can't ignore an insult, top it; if you can't top it, laugh it off; and if you can't laugh it off, it's probably deserved.

RE: UST Attendance

SJU has a few advantages when it comes to their attendance. The first one being: they're the only game in town. SCSU has a had a few years when they've put together some nice runs in the old NCC, but they don't have the atmosphere and the years of being on top to compete for attendance.

Second, UST football is hated for the apathy and reputation of snobbery of the rest of the students at their school. For the most part they're just a good group of dudes that would fit in at any school in the MIAC, who just happen to like the location and the opportunity to play football. UST students like to be where the party is at, and unfortunately that big school in Minneapolis has built themselves quite the facility to watch a football game.

Third, UST has no trouble calling me and asking for money, or sending bulk mailings out and asking for money. Informing alumni when homecoming is doesn't seem to be high on the list of priorities.

Fourth is the Roney era: Selling the program to others was not his priority. Selling the idea of winning the MIAC was not his priority. And to him, SJU was "just another game." In the words of Woody Hayes, "It's not just another game...it's MICHIGAN (SJU)! Do you know what that means!?"

I largely agree with your analysis, but I would say SJU has one advantage in addition to this list and before all the others your mention:  A better product.

Benchwarmer:  Have you been posting a link to TDT's column on your Facebook page?  We experienced record hits yesterday (almost bringing JohnnieFootball.com to its knees) including many from a Facebook referral.  I can only imagine some hopeless Tommie is trying to use TDT's words as Bulletin Board material!!

BTW: Arrive early on Saturday or you'll be carrying your offering of Hamm's for the Johnnie tailgate party halfway across campus as the Rent-a-Cops now blockade the entrance to the tailgating lot once they deem it to be "full".  Nobody gets through the barricade after that.  No ambulance, fire trucks, emergency vehicles, etc.

Hey TDT, the Mayor always gets through - just one of the many perks of the office.

What's this I hear about you wanting cocoa on Saturday? WTF, you want me to bring you animal crackers, too? I guess an afternoon watching USTD instead of the Johnnies and your plums shrivel up? It'll be a balmy 54 degrees.  A little koolaid and you'll think you're back at Sloppy Joe's.

I'm still working out the semantics as I will be arriving from Grand Forks. Probably solo since it is Sioux-Gopher hockey this weekend. Developing...

Wow, could be a really bad weekend for you if you are also a Gophers hockey fan. ;D

Do the math.  Caruso may have started to change the "mindset" at UST, but he can't force people to come to the games.

Do the math. Last year's Homecoming game had 2300 in attendance.

http://athletics.bethel.edu/custompages/football/2008/stats/ust-fb.htm

Math: 41% increase year over year.

Ha this is beyond ridiculous for any number of reasons.  I refuse to take the bait.  What planet do you live on?

Some planet where 3250 > 2300. Hey, it's not going to be St. John's attendance, nothing is, but you can't always scale the mount in one shot either.

Yes, that was my BABY JESUS t-shirt that Dan Barreiro led off the 5:00 hour talking about.
