Two more lines that match up statistically:

34 games, 220 receptions, 2766 yards, 26 TDs
37 games, 158 receptions, 2590 yards, 28 TDs

That would be Matt Frank and Chris Gardner, right?  I'll admit, when I was considering the MIAC's best receivers EVAR, Carleton's vaunted pass offense wasn't the first to spring to mind.  But yes, they were both good at football.

There have been a lot of good WRs in MIAC history, statistically another one that matches up:

28 games, 212 receptions, 3719 yards, 32 TDs

And a WR that played in the NFL (briefly):

40 games, 185 receptions, 3061 yards, 27 TDs
MIAC Champions: 1924, 1992

If you think Winford looked out of place on that list...

If you're gonna mention him you have to mention a couple others as well.  Though I wouldn't say they are on the level that B.E. was.  As WashedUp said, everyone but Elliot and Hvistendahl are out of place on that list. (Gant might be the most purely talented on that list, and I can't take any of Hoag's achievements seriously after reading a paragraph of his blog)

Regardless, this was brought up because of Waldvogel.  And maybe he'll dominate these next years and become one of the best to play in the MIAC.  But you don't see D3 receivers at 5'9'' 165lbs that improve a ton over the course of their career.  Speed and ability will take you to a certain level, but with that size there usually is a ceiling.

TC

I should clarify--my list is Elliott, Hvistendahl, Winford (who I think, at least statistically, is closer to Hvistendahl than Hvistendahl is to Elliott) and two Post Patterns punchlines.

There have been a lot of very good receivers in the MIAC, but when it comes to the best it's Elliott and then everyone else.

And to think, St. John's aggressively pursued Eric Decker.  That potentially could have had an effect on this conversation.

I will put my money on Haugen and Fasching to devise a scheme to contain the Tommie receiver. I can't remember the last time two sophmores beat SJU and I don't think it will happen Saturday.

You're right, last year Flannery was a sophomore and Aakre was only a freshman when BU beat SJU!

And before you guys get all up in my grill, I realize that it says 'last year' in my post.  Believe me, it was painful to write...

True...but it was not really the Bethel offense that won that game...it was your D and an inability to put the ball in the end zone on more than one occasion from inside the 20 by the Johnnies offensive offense.

Hate to interrupt the Johnnie - Tommie love fest but....I have to work the next 4 day shifts. Do you guys have a webcast of this game up north, or at least live stats for me to follow at work!

Thanks, good luck to both teams, stay healthy!

Live Stats yes...webcast no...play by play from numerous sources...UST, SJU and possibly neutral from the DIII.com boys

Yes, neutral webcast there. Promise to get all the kickoffs on.  ;)

Pat,

Are you going to do a half time interview with Touchdown Tommy?  You could interview him on where the best YMCA cots are in the MSP area.

Obviously this belongs here.

I guess that might have affected this conversation a little bit.

If it would've happened, I would hope that the SJU coaches would tell Decker something similar to what the UWRF coach told Owen Schmitt after his first year with them: Son, you have much bigger football things to do than what you'll do here.

Lastly, can someone explain to TDT what the Vikings cheerleaders have to do with the Tommie/Johnnie football game on Saturday?

I can't believe you actually need an explanation for this.

I believe if we're going just by stats and postseason play we'd have to go with B.E. Sheer talent and success at a professional level that would be UST alum Jim Gustafson.

Well from being up at the Vikes game a few weeks ago the MVC of the week was Bailey, a former Bennie and SJU grad from what her Bio stated.  So there is a connection there TDT.   ;D ;D ;D

If we're going to rip on a UST kid for a 3.0 GPA, I wonder what might be taking place down in Coral Gables right about now after this report was made public...

I'll take a shot at a prediction for game of the week, seeing as no one else wants to:

Carleton 30 Gustavus 23

Wait, you meant UST-SJU?  (I still am very interested in the Carleton game, to see if they can bounce back but ok...)

UST 23 SJU 13.  I'm a little hesitant having UST put up 23, but I think they can do it with one big play drive and 3 strong scoring drives.  SJU may eak out another field goal in there, but I'll keep my prediction at a 2 score victory for UST.  SJU's defense will make or break their game for them.  If they can make UST throw to win, it'll be a huge advantage for them.
