Clark: You sound like you are eager to hangout with your pal TC on Saturday.  May want to swing by his office on Saturday morning to pick him up...

So I can listen to more moaning about the game before it's played?  Uh, no thanks.

Sack up, TC!  You remember what John said at the kick-off luncheon ... we just have to keep it close and the Tommies will find a way to screw it up at the end.

I expect the defense to play well, although UST will certainly not be shut out ("They're real good," as John would say).  I think the question is whether the offense can control and move the ball enough to give the defense some rest in between stints.  The o-line has to play well and Boyle has to be sharp.

A question for you SJU guys:
Why does a Catholic school have such a rigid stance on alcohol? Hell, we Catholics aren't known for being teetotalers. Our daughter went to a Catholic school in California, and they were okay with alcohol, even serving it at parents' weekends and graduation functions. It was a Jesuit university, but is SJU so different?

Linfield is a Baptist college, with distinctly different views on alcohol, yet they are fine with the fans having alcohol at the tailgates. We don't drink it out of the containers and no one gets stupid. At homecoming this weekend, they will let our group have our usual keg and wine bar again, and they allow us to have a place under cover for the BBQs and tables. It's a cooperative move on the part of the college, and we appreciate it.

Why is SJU so reluctant to let adults enjoy alcohol on campus? I bet you guys donate substantially to the university, and you're Catholic, for crying out loud!

It's a long story, of course...

St. John's is not a dry campus.  In fact, there is a university-run pub on campus that serves alcohol prior to and after (during?) games.  In my experience, St. John's has always had a very relaxed stance on alcohol on a day-to-day basis.  There was a new Dean of Campus Life in 2004 or 2005 (???) who had a truncated run with the unversity due to his efforts to limit alcohol on campus and as part of campus events.

Gameday is a different story, though.  It's one thing for the university to endorse serving alcohol at the campus pub, where trained employees are checking identification in a controlled environment.  It's an entirely different case when the general public is consuming alcohol on campus grounds while the university's limited crowd control resources are already stretched thin.  Remember, St. John's is a school of less than 2,000 undergraduate students.  There will be more than 10,000 people at this Saturday's game against St. Thomas.  The administration already has enough to worry about on gamedays.

While there are other people on this board that will argue the point, I don't think the school has taken any significant steps to limit the responsible use of alcohol at games.  They have rules:  don't have the alcohol out in plain site, don't get around that by handing out the same red, plastic cup to every person who walks up with a case of beer, and act like responsible adults.  They have Rent-A-Cops around to make sure those rules are followed.  In exchange, they have provided us with a grill, a porta-potty, and a spot in the parking lot to set up shop.

The constant Rent-A-Cop presence on Saturdays is not typical of small, private Catholic schools, but very little about football Saturdays at St. John's is typical of small, private Catholic schools.

There is a potential concern of lawsuits; if there were an accident on grounds or leaving the grounds perhaps somehow the university could be held somewhat responsible. This is the paranoia that exists, and the Rent-A-Cops what to show this is their playground.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

That all makes sense. I had the impression from other posters that you guys had to hide the alcohol and that the campus cops were Nazis whose only goal was to spoil your fun.

I do remember the guy a few years ago who created the ill feelings. Lake, maybe?

Thanks for the explanation. Enjoy your Saturday.

During his interviev this evening on 830am with Mike Max, UST Coach Glenn Caruso states his team is "atop the polls and heading to northern MN this weekend".

If someone happens to see coach Caruso in Duluth or International Falls Saturday please point him in the direction of west central MN and the top ten Johnnies.

He also talked about recruiting UST linebacker Tommy Becker.... didn't Becker start out at the U?

Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

There is a potential concern of law suits; if there were an accident on grounds or leaving the grounds perhaps somehow the university could be held somewhat responsible. This is the paranoia that exists, and the Rent-A-Cops what to show this is their playground.

Lawsuits would benefit some of you, which would be a good thing.

Maniac:  Still waiting for your score prediction.  You can run, but you can't hide...

TDT-- you and you good bear buddy VOJ can stop salivating for my prediction. Here it is.

The drought of Biblical porportions cometh to an end. After 22 years without a win on the former cranberry field turned into a mecca for small college football, the Tommies will  board the busses back to St. Paul carrying the Holy Grail for the first time. UST 28, SJU 12. Setting the stage for a rematch in the 2nd round of the NCAAs at the House that IA Built...which will be one of the best games in the history of this rivalry

(what? you thought I'd pick against my alma mater?)
After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.

Nicely explained, TC. Indeed, some of us might recall that when the drinking age dipped to 18 in the early '70s you could not only buy beer (including Grain Belt dark, if memory serves) at Der Keller most nights, but it was served on-tap weekend nights in the Refectory (main dining hall for you pagans).

TDT - I'm here and will be there bright and early on Saturday and way before you.  Some of us have to work for a living and thus aren't able to be on PP 24/7.

Also, don't for a minute pretend that it was my idea to have Fins bring cocoa on Saturday.  I specifically told you to bring something warm for last week's game.  But instead of stepping up to the plate and coming through with something for the team you instead tell Fins that I suggested he bring something hot to drink?  We'll settle this once and for all on Saturday morning.  That is if you make it to the game and don't get bogged down buying clothing that you will later decide to return.

Wonka - we'll see about your bevy come Saturday.  If I remember there may be something for you.

Fins - +k for your post about TDT's plums.  Or should we say raisins?

Saturday will be a great game.  I can't wait to witness the Johnnies down the Tommies one more time.
Go Johnnies!!!

Wow...4 td's against the Johnnies D, that is a bit ambitious.  I see it as a 3 to 10 point game...either way.  There has been a major change in the Johnnies D since the opening two games...thinking less and just going out making plays.

Here is a subject for debate...what is UST's best win?  A down Concordia squad?  A Jeckyll and Hyde St. Olaf team?

If its Concordia consider the fact that the Cobbers made some mistakes, a blocked punt and an interception that UST returned for 6, so the game can be viewed as being closer than the final score would indicate

UST was down to St. Olaf at one point in time 14-13 and didn't the Oles have issues with FG's?

Just something to think about
