Carleton is back down as a program but pluckier than they were 5+ years ago

This may not have been what you meant to imply, but I'll get my daily Carleton football talk in anyways.  Carleton is not down as a program this year.  They're down with no seniors and don't have the experience to compete with the top MIAC schools, but the program itself is doing fine.  They will be very good in the coming years.  I completely believe they will have a conference championship in one of the next 3 years.  They have loads of skill position talent on both sides of the ball (don't laugh, I've seen them play and practice, they're going to be good).  If their sophomore QB comes around, and I think he is doing that right now, they are going to be very dangerous.

That's precisely what I meant:  Carleton's record may be down from last season, but their team's long-term outlook is stronger than it has been in a long time.  I'm a little apprehensive about the Johnnies' game with them to end the season--they're much more dangerous than their 1-4 MIAC record suggests.

And I'm sure Ramler was able to recruit off of last season's success.  All I was trying to say is their record is not as good as they staff might have been hoping for after being 30 seconds from the conference title last year.

I also expect the Carleton-SJU game to be close at the end of the season.  At that point, the Johnnies will most likely have locked up a playoff spot and may look past the Knights.  Ramler knows how to coach against SJU (0-3, but combined losses are by 17 points with 2 games coming down to the wire).  Also, I just feel like the Knights match up well personnel-wise.  It will be an interesting game to watch.

Carleton doesn't have the studs they used to. If SJU can establish a ground game it'll be a long day for the Knights. 24 to 7 SJU.

TC - I figured that was about what you meant, just wanted to get my Carleton talk in there.  I think the last game may be semi-close, but I don't think it's anything the Johnnies can't handle.  Ramler's skill players have been improving each week, but the defense is still missing too many assignments to be able to keep the game close against a good team.

Bench - May not be a far off prediction, but a 24-7 game would not be bad for Carleton.  They still have two huge, winnable games these next weeks before SJU.  Getting to 5-5 is a big deal for recruiting, and for next year when you're able to say you're returning 22 starters.

As for community colleges.  I agree, they can be a great stepping stone to finish at a 4-year, but sometimes kids get lost in that transition and end up not making it to the 4-year.  And I know we're talking about MIAC schools and I value my liberal arts education that I received, but a lot of the times it's not the right choice for the kid.  If the kid has the drive and the ability, he'll succeed whether it be at a private liberal arts school or at the U of M.  Football was not a factor in my writing of this paragraph.

I have always thought VOJ did a great job and it really hit home last Saturday. Spent about 4 days driving past Lincoln last Sat. afternoon. Needless to say, VOC swamped out everything. Could only listen to that for about 5 minutes of overanalyzing before switching to the iPod. Thank God for VOJ and the Cyclones 'Monkey Stomping' the Cornhuskers.  :P

Yes, I know the rules for 'Monkey Stomps' but a Cyclone W at Lincoln for the first time in 34 years IS a 'Monkey Stomp'.  ;D

Pretend that Dusty is correct regarding Boyle's time on the sidelines due to injury (even a stopped clock is right twice a day, and all that).  Can the Johnnies play two more games (essentially going three) without Boyle and still play well in the post season (knock on wood they make it)?

My brain says no to the good play, but my heart says yes.  I still get the feeling that this Johnnie team is special.  They really have a lot of heart, more than normal (which is already a lot), and have an addiction to the cardiac finish.  They are looking at a lot of very tough competition this post season (Central, Linfield, WW, MUC) and every game could be a real battle, even more than normal in the West.

I agree w/ Hazzben though, the way things are trending, a 4 year education at the private schools are going to become un-touchable to those who don't a) have parents w/ a large bankroll backing them up or b) don't want to spend their next 10-20 yrs making huge monthly loan payments.

A person's most valuable asset is themselves.  A person will take out a 30 year loan to buy a house, but not a 30 year loan to build a money making machine (namely themselves)?

Any economists here that want to discuss the influence of artificial stimulus on the supply/demand balance point?  I won't go any further as I bet Bennie can guess where I'm going with this three year old conversation... :)

That is a very good point...however, I chose when I was financially ready to take on a mortgage payment, student loan payments come due 6 months post graduation whether you're ready or not.

I have always firmly believed that you should be able to go to any school that you are accepted to. You CAN make it work. They made it work at Wabash, and they can make it work other places.

I am very nervous about Carlton because of the knowledge that Coach Ramler has about SJU and those crazy trick plays...Brumm at Augsburg will be tough to deal with, they may not have as explosive an offense as last year, but they have consistently put up points this year, and they are riding a 3 game winning streak into this weekends game with USTd

Snooze.  Wake TDT up when there is some actual football chatter.  Or the Little Wiener Doggie gets mouthy.  This $$ discussion is boring.  Snooze.

I hope that the discussion regarding tuition goes on for many more pages.  If it means that we will not hear from TDT then it has to be worth it.

Be aware, though, that if you let your guard down and happen to mention your mother's coat or talk about a murse that TDT will be on here like white on rice.
Go Johnnies!!!

Very insightful Veek.  Thank you kindly for that astute analysis.  Your polish and grandaur are 2nd only to that of our esteemed Mayor.  BTW: Thanks for staying for the entire game on Saturday.  Was it a weird feeling not being halfway to The Falls with 7 mins to go in the 4th qtr?  Please advise at your convenience.

FYI:

TDT and LBean will be tailgating outside of TCF Bank Stadium on Saturday before the Gophers v. Michigan State game at 7pm.  If anyone would like to join us please let us know.  Tickets prices are falling precipitiously (and good seats are readily available on the secondary market) after the last 2 drubbing for the Gophers, but Saturday night on the Univ. of MN campus should be rockin' and rollin'!!!
