Why is it that Pat always thinks SJU is ripe for the upset? I hope SJU D listens to the podcast-they get no respect. And Pat said he was going to the SJU game-so TDT can chat with him, if he decides to drop by the tailgate.

I did pick against St. John's once in the Triple Take, the Bethel game. (Clearly I was way off base.)

Keith picked against St. John's three times in the Triple Take: St. Olaf, Concordia-Moorhead and UW-Eau Claire.

Why is it that St. John's posters always think I hate St. John's?

Pat..as has been pointed out on the boards, ANY anti-Johnnie viewpoint will be seen as a slight...or maybe it was the purple tie you were sporting on Sunday afternoon?   ;D :o  Just kidding.

Keep up the good work Pat, don't let the haters get you down.

Just to be safe, I think the Johnnie fans on this board should skip this week's D3Football.com podcast.

Pat-please read my post again, I never said you hated SJU. Maybe I should have said why does Keith always think SJU is ripe for the upset-I guess I kind of used Pat as a synonym for D3.
For full disclosure-I think Keith did say that injuries could be a problem for SJU and cause them to lose, but we fans don't know if those players will be ready to play on Saturday or not.

Hello MIAC PP!
Former Auggie player here, long time board watcher, and now that my playing days are done, I figured its time to start sharing some insight.
Just for the record, I truly enjoyed reading this board for the past 4 years. Its been pretty interesting.

Welcome to the board, and congrats on your career...even if it was at Augsburg ;)

My assessment of the often mentioned "Tommie short field" argument brought up on the board:

Yes, the Tommies did benefit from two short fields (32 and 17 yards) on their scoring drives in Collegeville this year - but for those who were at the game, I'd argue that Tony Margarit was so wide open on his 32 yard catch that he'd have scored from just about anywhere on the field. The Tommies had a 60 yard drive that ended in a missed field goal, and let's also not forget that the Johnnies benefited from a short field after a fumble by a freshman in the return game for one of their two scores - and also had two interceptions gift-wrapped by Greg Morse (no longer starting).  Not to say that St. John's didn't come out as the better team that day - but I think any Tommie fan should feel confident that a rematch in Collegeville would be a very close, very exciting game.  That is, if we can get by Monmouth...

Rough Monday Duff?

I didn't think my post was condescending...

I just wanted to point out that Concordia was 3-5 in the MIAC and just lost to GAC, injuries happen, and I agreed that SJU has played better than normal this year.  I just think they will need to continue that if they want to keep playing, which almost goes unsaid.

Again, I didn't think I was berating anyone or bickering.

Yes, the cobbers went 3-5 this season.  5-5 overall in a conference where 2 schools made the d-3 playoffs.  However Carleton went 1-7 in the MIAC.  Also, 1 winning season in the past 11 years when compared to concordia's 9 winning seasons in the past 11 years (source D-3.com).  Concordia can be in the conversation for being a tough game even if it's a loss to SJU.

I can understand if you have to pick a major upset you target SJU who has had a number of close grtty wins this year and some injuries as well.  No one in their right mind will pick the 32nd team into the field against the dynasty that is MUC or a 6-4 at the Perk...and really if Wesley gets beat is it an upset?  I mean the South and who has represented it has not been a real threat to win it all for a few years...UMHB in 2004, Trinity in 2002 Bridgewater in 2001 being the exceptions

The WEST is like the SEC, its a man's game and you always better be closing and yes if WW wins it all this year it will be a victory for the WEST.  I will enjoy following the first round matchup of Central vs UMHB the last south team to really do anything in the playoffs.  I think Central got the worst draw of any in the first round for the West.

Exactly -- your generalization is just like my generalization, right? You personally don't hate me and I personally don't always pick against St. John's.

I think the thing in play for me here is that St. John's has the best opponent in the first round of any top seed. (I know W&J is ranked higher, but I don't think it should be.)

Pat-I agree with your post and, of course, I don't hate you-I really don't know you and I wouldn't hate someone just because they pick football games and sometimes don't pick my college team.

(Cue Kumbaya background music...)

Which brings up a good point with all of the SJU-UST(D) talk. I think SJU will have their hands full on Saturday, and hopefully they're focusing on that and not looking ahead.
As far as 'greatness" goes, it is a description more likely to be bestowed with the benefit of hindsight, after a team has accomplished great things, like winning it all. So much can happen along the way to trip a team up, it's quite a feat to win the prize (recall '87 & '91 Twins, '03 SJU). And speaking of '03, I recall during the season thinking they were a pretty good team, but never thought they were great, Blake E notwithstanding. The Tommie game that year was almost their undoing. I thought Keating was too short to see over the line when he'd miss open receivers. But he proved he had what it takes and has earned his place in Johnnie football history.

Yes, he was very wide open, but that's not a play you would usually call outside of the 40 yard line.  The play fakes of a jet sweep and bubble screen are much less effective against 2 safeties if they have more room to cover behind them.  Loved that call though, just a great play and play call.  Visited a high school coach I know that weekend, drew up the play, he installed it on Monday.

cobbernation:  Why bring up Carleton?  I was just saying CCM was below average this year as a team (you cannot argue that) and didn't see them as a tough game for SJU with the likes of Bethel and UST.  I know when people get defensive of a statement on this board they just take shots at the other person's team allegiance. If you want, I'll return a shot back at you, but I'll wait on that for now.  I know Carleton had a crappy year this year and had a crappy last however many, but you can thank Bubba Sullivan for stopping recruiting, and you will be able to thank Ramler for making them into a consistently winning team the next couple of years.

Just because no one ever strokes you doesn't mean you have to hate...maybe you can get TC or better yet your new buddy Bench to cuddle with you...might help your self esteem, maybe he will loan you some Tommie gear, or his purple security blanket and then you can walk around like Linus in the Peanuts cartoons and snap people with your blanket who are mean to you.
