Seriously, SJU 7 points-who are they playing UWW? Come on. I guess there can really be no questions asked. Ryan, you got the score right, way to go.
Pat: how about a bet-if SJU score 7 or less I buy you some SJU merchandise, if SJU scores more than 7, you provide me with some merchandise, deal?
Here is what I don't get about Pat's score: from the Payoffs picks "Pat: Mary Hardin-Baylor.(Surprise team) Not that there's a player on this team that played during the team's 2004 run to the Stagg Bowl, all against ranked teams, all on the road, but it's tempting to think they could catch lightning in a bottle again. Looking down the road, I could see St. John's being prepared well enough defensively for the Crusader attack, but that requires the Johnnie offense to score enough to get them there." Why even mention SJU, when you have them loosing in the first game??

Just a reminder, if you wanna be in playoff pick 'ems....they're ready for you!

Looks like the sioux might not be the sioux much longer-no voting by the second tribe.

The NCAA policy on Native American mascots does not require member institutions to change their names or mascots. The actual policy precludes member schools with Native American nicknames, mascots, or imagery from hosting NCAA championships.  These schools are still eligible to participate in championships, but the policy restricts them from wearing uniforms or other paraphernalia that depict nicknames or images while competing in NCAA championship events.

However, this is hindering the University of North Dakota's ability to find more suitable conferences for football, basketball, volleyball, etc. For example, the Summit League is not considering their membership until the issue is resolved.

There are a couple of things to consider with this topic.  1) How long has UND's nickname been the fighting sioux? I am guessing around 60 years maybe, I am not sure. 2) Why do the native american tribes have a problem with the nickname now and not 60 years ago when the nickname was voted on?

Both questions are irrelevant, though, if you must know, UND's original nickname is the Flickertails (which accompany it's official school color of pink very well.  TDT, you must be a fan.).

The NCAA nickname issue turned into something entirely about the money, and schools like Illinois and Florida State were able to buy off their tribes.  UND, perhaps because of the sour taste left in the tribes' mouths after the late-90s nickname disputes (the resolution of which was, if I remember correctly, not exactly lived up to by UND), was unable to do so easily this time, and now is between a rock and a hard place because of the issues Bench notes.  I do feel sorry for UND, but in a way not-- Englestead dug the grave ten years ago and now the school needs to lie in it.

Veek

Safe travels, Zip.

You and I along with JR and Tats will show up well before USTTDT tomorrow.  You can bank on it.  My guess is that LBean and a few others will beat USTTDT there, too.

GO JOHNNIES!!!
Go Johnnies!!!

raiderguy

First of all GO JOHNNIES! I am again going to take advantage of an extended visit to Ohio to see the Raiders in a very interesting game with W & J. While they may not have been deemed worthy of entry of the tourney the MUC connection should make it interesting. Names like Siriani, Caponi (D-back from the '03 Stagg you may recall )and Justin Stickley are all coaches for W & J with obvious ties to Mount add a little to the mystic of this game. These teams scrimmage every fall and have learned to dislike each other. They finally get a chance to put their money where their mouth is (on both sides). Should be fun and weather still calling for a fast track. No sprinklers needed this week. ;D

Safe travels for everyone...you too TDT. I am very disturbed that your early season dance with the purple shirt has caused some long term memory loss or just a plain brain pharts. Get over it and get off the "wrong shade" of PURPLE band wagon. St Thomas? You have been spending way too much time with MIACMANIAC somewhere? ???
WELCOME TO THE MACHINE!

I think it would be hilarious if the first 499 students to show up for the free Clemens tickets were from St. Benedict.

I fail to see the hilarity.  What am I missing?

D O.C. is oregonian for troll is all.

Troll as a verb, right?

I'll earmark this and revive it during the ice fishing months.

I DO claim ignorance, as some of you hypothesized. I'm guessing St. Benedict's is an all women institution? If not, then my post was misplaced humor.
Mid winter topic:Does St. John's University share that football money with the sports teams of the school inextricably linked on certain websites, St. Benedict?

Thank you J-Esq, you never get the entire story in the papers.  I never knew about the late 90's nickname disputes.

Two campuses, one education.  Classes are co-ed.  Generally, the departments are on one campus or the other (i.e. the chemistry department is located at CSB, the biology department at SJU).  Student housing is the one thing that is not co-ed, at least as far and the rules go.

A tradition unrivaled...

What kind of backwards, old-fashioned, no-fun campus are they running up in collegeville?  Well at least you can drink out of red cups in the parking lots....

Because even though I think that Coe could win, there's still a very, very good chance St. John's will. Is it a surprise that I think the game is a toss-up? I would have thought the score indicated that pretty well.

As I said in the St. John's team capsule: "The Johnnies may need two touchdowns from a linebacker somewhere in this bracket."

(For you young guys, that's a reference to Beau LaBore, 1999.)

I will let Ryan Tipps know you like his pick. :)

RE: UND Nickname debate

Bench is doing a jurisprudence article on Cultural Property and the Law on this very subject. Here's how the nickname came to be:

(The name change) was documented in a letter to the editor of the Dakota Student, the University's student ran newspaper, in which the letter suggested the University of North Dakota should change its nickname from the "Flickertails" to the "Fighting Sioux for three main reasons: (1) Sioux are a good exterminating agent for Bison (the nickname of their rival at the time, North Dakota State University); (2) They (Sioux) are warlike, of physique and bearing; (3) The word Sioux is easily rhymed for yells and songs. Subsequently this logic was adopted by the Athletic Board of Control and the "Flickertails" was summarily changed to the "Fighting Sioux." "Thirty Years of Telling Us to be Honored," Holly Annis.
