We can now (finally) declare  that the MIACPP Hotstove League is officially open.  8-)

It seems like every year during the Bowl season at least one of the Top 5 teams in the country is shown to have an amazing lack of depth at a couple positions.....How is it that a program like Texas does not have a backup QB that is capable of playing better than this guy?  In addition, how can Texas not have one reliable RB that they can give a couple of carries.....just stunning.

Redtooth...would want to sit behind McCoy for 3 years until you got your shot?  The kid played well at times but made some crucial mistakes, that shovel pass was a bad decision all the way around, take a knee your only down 11 rather than 18 at the end of the half

That blind side hit is not his fault, I mean it was a perfectly called blitz...

Could have a Redshirt Sophomore waiting in the wings.  Redshirt your first year, backup McCoy your second.  Then have three years to be the Man.  Didn't hear if the kid last night was a True-Freshman or a Redshirt-Freshman.

True freshman, according to si.com.

Texas also had two Jr. QB's on the roster.  From what I heard on Mike and Mike this morning, the from last night was the number 2 rated QB prospect in the country last year.

Ouch...  Don't try this at home kids.

"Firefighters cut free man's ***** from steel pipe"

A man who went to casualty with his ***** stuck in a steel pipe had to be cut free by firefighters using a metal grinder.

Medics at Southampton General Hospital could not get the man's ***** out of the stainless steel pipe because the restricted blood flow had caused it to become aroused.

And in a rarity for an English tabloid, there is no relevant picture.  Small favors.

"The anxious man aged about 40 gave hospital staff no explanation about how the pipe got stuck after he turned up on Tuesday morning. "

Really, does anyone need an explaination? 8-)

I don't believe it's signed yet, still working out the details on both sides.

An article from today 1-7-09 written by Minnesota H.S. coaching legend George Thole About The Brewster Era

Thole mentions Brewster maybe being a step closer to Pasadena in the article. I was at the BCS title game last night and actually saw Brewster waiting in line in the men's room!! He had a Gopher sweater vest on and was wearing a Texas hat! I'm thinking that is the only way he is going to get to the Rose Bowl.....as the guest of someone!

More evidence, if we needed it, that the BCS is a farce. If Nebraska had beaten Texas in that controversial end of game call, it would probably have been TCU vs Alabama in the "Championship" game. That would have left Boise State, who subsequently beat TCU, out in the cold, and still not getting any respect.

There were some who were predicting that Cinci would have leapfrogged TCU and played Alabama in the BCS Title Game.

Yeah, and with what 'bama did to Florida, and Florida did to Cinci, that would have been even more of a travesty.

I think 'bama would probably demolish Boise State, but BSU deserved a shot at showing it on the field.

Screw the BcS!

Cinci did leapfrog TCU and became #3 before getting crushed by the Gators in the Sugar Bowl

It would have made the "BS"c game between Cinci and Alabama which clearly would heavily favor Alabama. Which leads me to think Iowa or Boise State would have been left out of any bcs game.

VOJ is dead on here. For instance, Jevan Snead was McCoy's backup but decided he'd rather play fb than watch fb so he transferred to Ole Miss. And the blind side was a perfect storm...beautiful play call and total failure by Texas to pick it up.

As for the RB's at UT, I've wondered the same thing the last 2 years. They essentially get a couple of the top 5 backs coming out of Texas each year and they can't find one that is a legit stud? That said, it was nearly impossible to run against a defense like 'Bama once the Frosh stepped in at QB. The game plan quickly became, if we stop Texas from running we will win this game.

On a different note. Interesting news about Pete Carroll coming out of LA. If he goes, is that the end of USC's mini-dynasty, or do they continue to be the USC of old?

FYI - The Eagles/Cowboys playoff game that I'm watching features two Melbournites.

McBriar, punting for Dallas, is a Melbourne son that had a big leg in high school but wasn't fast enough to make it in Aussie Rules.  He went to Hawaii for college and made it as an all-pro for Dallas.

Sav Rocca, punting for the Philly, is also a Melbourne son.  He played about 10 or 12 years in Aussie Rules for Collingwood and North Melbourne.  Always a very big kick but inconsistent.  I didn't think he would show enough consistency to make the NFL, but I was wrong.

A further FYI, punting for the Cardinals and the first Aussie to play in a Superbowl is Ben Graham, formerly of the Geelong Cats.  An interesting play from last year's game was when Graham did an Aussie Rules drop punt and speared the ball out of bounds when he was kicking on a short field.  I tried to find some video on youtube, but came up short.

EDIT:  I did find this video of some big Ben Graham bombs from his last year playing in Australia.  The first was easily over 70 meters (the red semi-circle you may notice is 50 meters).  That would be three steps to an 80 yard punt.  Graham has always had a big boot.

Oz, McBriar is married to the daughter of one of our local Docs here in DL. He was up here a couple of summers ago. I watched him practice at the High School field one afternoon. He put on a pretty good show. He has quite a leg.

I was going to have Tmert weigh in on this with a Left Coast perspective. Sounds like it's not a done deal yet. Reports are that he won't have complete control over personnel decisions. This could be a stumbling block. One of the names being mentioned as a possible replacement is OSU coach Mike Riley.
