Hey 57, I think you better get a better understanding of hockey ettiquette. Usually, goons take on goons. By having an idiot like Downie go after a $9M /year superstar like Ovechkin is not only frowned upon, but should be dealt with by having the Caps tough guys (they have no "goons" they actually play hockey) go after St Louis or Lecavelier. Ovie probably would have cleaned his clock, but let's say he breaks a bone in his hand. He costs the Caps, and the league money, and the excitement he brings. If anyone thinks that's a good thing, let him speak his deranged mind. Bradley did exactly the right thing, and will only rise in the esteem of his team mates. Then Konopka goes after Dave Steckel, who I can't remember having a fight since joining the Caps. I hope next time they meet, Bradley and Erskine and Chimera do a Knick Knack Patty Whack on his hard head.

Despite what some have hinted at ( Jeff Halpern is a good guy, and one time Caps captain, but is dead wrong on this) the initial check on Downie by Ovechkin was clean as a whistle. Why he got a penalty when Downie threw some punches is a mystery. I guess grabbing your attacker and holding on is now a penalty.

By the way, bennie, I watched the Wild embarass your favorite ;D team, the Canucks last night. It was a thing of beauty, I'm sure you'll agree.

Also, Chimera, speaking of Gordie Howe, got a Gordie Howe hattrick last night. A goal, an assist and a fight. He seems to be settling in to the new go - go style of the Caps.

Oh, I understand hockey etiquette all right. All I said was I liked it better in the days of Howe, Richard, Beliveau etc. and how Howe would have handled it. He was a superstar and eventually even the idiots wouldn't mess with him.  8-)
BTW: They had goons then and my favorite was John Ferguson.

I forgot how much of a dinosaur (and I mean that affectionately) you are. Those were different times, and it seems that things change. They may not become better in all areas, but I think I like the game better overall now. There always has been a "code" in hockey. It changes and morphs as time marches on, but most adhere to that code.

The game is different now but I can still remember going to Denver Invader games (for a couple bucks).
They were held at the Coliseum. There was no Plexiglas and you could hang over the rail if you had the stones. The players wore no helmets (even the goalies as I remember) and you were close enough to not only hear the hitting but smell how raunchy those guys were. You could bring your own cooler or buy a beer for half a buck.  Much more fun than watching the Johnnies play outside although I watched from the second floor window of the old science building. Legend has it that John coached from there but I watched every home game he coached and never saw him up there.

One reason I love Jarome Iginla is that he is old school. He can score or drop gloves.  ;D

It irritates the hell out of me to watch some horribly dirty players get out of ever having to back up their actions (the Sedins!!! Malkin!!). Code or not, I feel sorry for the enforcers on their teams. It must suck to get beat up because your teammate is a bi+$h.

Did anyone see the Wild/Duck game from about a week ago? I was not a huge fan of Nick Boynton until I saw him stick up for a teammate by dropping gloves with Boogaard. Parros is on IR, so he stepped in despite giving up 6 inches and 40+ lbs. I lost respect for Derek after watching him hit Boynton while he was pinned to the ice by a ref. Apparently Derek was absent when it was explained that part of the Code is not to hit your opponent when he is in a vulnerable position... 8-)

No, but my Dad did. I still have relatives up there. I always joke that when I die I know I will go to heaven because I have already been to Hibbing! :D

57 - Just got your voicemail.

Looks like Pat got the light bill paid now or at least fed the squirrels in the cage.  ;D

I won't claim authorship for this. It came to me by e-mail:

Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the US economy by
spending your stimulus check wisely:

*  If you spend the stimulus money at Wal-Mart, the money will go to China.

*  If you spend it on gasoline, your money will go to the Arabs.

*  If you purchase a computer, it will go to India.

*  If you purchase fruit and vegetables, it will go to Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala.

*  If you buy a car, it will go to Japan.

*  If you purchase useless stuff, it will go to Taiwan.

*  If you pay your credit cards off, or buy stock, it will go to management bonuses and they will hide it offshore.

Instead, keep the money in America by:

1  Spending it at yard sales, or

2  Going to ball games, or

3  Spending it on prostitutes, or

4  Beer, or

5  Tattoos.

(These are the only American businesses still operating in the US .)

I'm going to go to a ball game with a tattooed prostitute that I met at a yard sale, and drink beer! Just call me a patriot.

There is an unofficial restaurant named "Zimmy's" that has good food and some Dylan photos and album covers.  You can also go by his boyhood home, but it is privately owned.  Dylan never spoke kindly of where he grew up and I think the town has always resented him for that.  I don't think even a street is named after him.  Hibbing has embraced him more recently with Dylan sound-alike contests and such during the summer months.

But those of us from over in Rapids fully understood Dylan's point of view...

Tmert, you keeping up on the drama at USC? Think Sarkisian would come back? If they settle for Herm Edwards I think I would officially resign from the Trojan Fan club.
Sum-- does the hiring of Lane Kiffin qualify as better or worse than Herm Edwards? it is definitely more strange, possibly bizzare, to say the least.

Mose, I like this hire a lot, considering who is coming with him....Monte and Ed Orgeron are part of the package! I think this is way better than a Herm Edwards or even a Steve Mariucci. Now if we can lure Norm Chow back.......

I dunno, Sum, I look at him as one half of an idiot savant (take your pick of the half).  There is the advantage of the connection to Pete Carroll, he certainly brings a lot of energy and we know he can recruit, but Kiffin strikes me as awkward, shallow, vapid, and immature - and those may be some of his better qualities.  I was horrified to hear that SC's selection effort was led by my #1 son's former T-ball coach - Pat Haden, whom I've always liked and thought was pretty level headed.

Kiffin may be a good coach (I don't think anyone knows for sure) and he may win a lot of games, but I don't think his selection is going to raise SC's image in any fashion.  Indeed, if I were the NCAA, I'd open an office in LA.  With Boy Blunder at SC and Neweasel at UCLA, they'd have more than enough work to do.  And from a purely pragmatic perspective, with the NCAA already looking into possible violations under Pete's watch, hiring a guy who scoffs at accumulating 6 minor infractions as just being average for the SEC would not seem to be the best way to convince the NCAA that you're serious about regaining institutional control of your sports programs.

Did you catch TJ Simers' article in the LA Times?  http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-simers14-2010jan14,0,4327506.column

Oh, yeah - Kiffin does have a smokin' hot wife (Layla!) ... though there's some suggestion of the lights being on but nobody home.
