57Johnnie, I honestly do not remember the significance of February 17, 1981. No wedding, no child's birthday and no getting drunk at the ballroom in Glencoe or the Bluenote in Winsted. :-[
Paris Hilton was born ............... ;)

I don't remember much about Feb. 17, 1981, but I do know that today is Nick Punto Day on the web...

Won't 97% of the audience get obstructed on purpose before entering the venue?

Every time I've gone for that option it's worked out. I rarely sit anyway.

bennie - I see you're going to have a problem tonight in deciding who to root for ;D

The Jackets better lock up Noel as coach and get rid of that "Interim" tag. He was the Head Coach here in Milwaukke for the AHL Admirals for a few years, (Todd Richards was an Asst for a year or two also) He always seemed to have them playing as a team without what seemed like a real potent offense. He always had a good "D" corps - Shea Weber, Greg Zanon, Kevin Kline, Sheldon Brookban, Cody Franson, Ville Koistinen  to name a few. I would think he knows something about defense, and he developed them as much as relied on their innate talent. This is bolstered by the fact that Mason has 2 straight shutouts. Those are not just due to his efforts. He also had a cup-o-coffee with the Capitals back in the 80's, so how bad could he be?

Well, folks, it's the off-season for football, but the footy preseason has just begun.  Last night Hawthorn absolutely destroyed Richmond in the opening game of the warm-ups.  The Hawks look really strong this year.  They look very fit and very hungry to erase the disappointment of last season when they failed to even make the post season after their Grand Final victory.  Rumor had been that the Hawkers had a very good pre-season training and it was sure on show last night.

To get those of you interested back into the mood, I'm posting up a few highlight reels...

2009 Marks of the Season

2009 Goals of the Season

2009 Clangers of the Season

2009 Grand Final (last five minutes)  (This was a bruising, blistering affair and we enter the last five minutes with a dead heat at 67-67)

And just because I can't quite give up the glory yet...

2008 Season Highlights

Make sure to watch them in high def.

Oz - there are some even BETTER season highlights here ...

2009 Saint John's University Football Video Highlights

LOTS of great plays; I'm partial to the ones at 0:21, 0:51, 1:54 and 2:57

Billy Lawrence (41) has 3 great interceptions and the award for seconds on the highlights per minutes actually played (he was Wimmer's backup, so he'll play plenty next year).

As I say, lots of great plays.

I was wondering if we would see a highlight reel for the year.  Some great Johnnie football on that vid and lucky number 13 had a couple of spectacular interceptions as well.

It was a great season last year.  Damned shame about the post-season finish, but I'm sure looking forward to the next year.

You know that SJU could sell a "NFL GameDay" type service.  I would pay for a video feed, provided it had quality voice over like VOJ.  Visitors would probably be willing to pay a one game fee as well, again providing quality voice and production.

I guess it isn't in the spirit of DIII to charge, but everything costs money to produce.  Someone has to pay.

Upon reflection, we often point the finger at Gagliardi for the lack of video, but I wonder if it isn't the radio contract that actually limits this.  I imagine that the Bear pays quite a hefty sum for the rights to Johnnie sport and it's obvious they put a lot of money into covering it.  I wouldn't be surprised if they have an exclusive coverage contract for all media at home games, and only a couple explicit exceptions, like away team radio coverage, are allowed.

VOJ answered this question about broadcast rights last month.

With St. Johns' endowment & wealthy alumni you would think they could add webcast. ::) ;) If it wasn't for work, the drive & the cold, I would consider making the trek up to C-ville. This is easily the game of the night.
Perhaps WBHR owns the right to broadcast, and thus a student run video webcast wouldn't be allowed?

We have no control over the potential "webcast" of an SJU sporting event...to be honest I have never asked about a webcast and why SJU does not provide one.
If what VOJ says is true, it certainly doesn't make sense that St. John's doesn't have anyone webcasting their games.  I believe they are only MIAC school to not have their games webcast.  It's not prohibitively expensive to do your own webcast, and you can always go the route the tommies have and let a 3rd party webcast and collect a portion of the ad revenue they generate.

Umm...  Ok, the administration is looking for a way to make a buck.  So start making a buck already.  Or else Gagliardi (or another sport administrator) doesn't want video published.  Well, that sucks.  Invite the scrutiny.  Feed the Nation.  Live the Red dream!  Viva la Revolution!
