Tommies Announce 2010 Recruiting Class
Looks like Coach Caruso has developed a bit of a Florida pipeline.

http://www.tommiesports.com/ftbl/news/2010Recruits.html

After reviewing Coach Caruso's freshman class it doesn't appear he puts much stock in outstate MN.

Doesn't put stock in it? I'm sure it's far more likely that other schools will beat St. Thomas for those players. I don't think you or I know whether it's for lack of trying or caring.

Yet again bias and prejudice are unfairly discounted as legitimate arguments.  As if they somehow aren't enough to end the debate.  Facts, if they agree, are just icing on the cake.

Tommies suck!  Now that's an agreeable fact.

Oz figured out the answer to this relatively easy question in just under seven hours.  Must be the lack of offseason viewing that led to such a long response time.   Congrats Oz.

Everybody and everything does suck at some time or another.  I got no ax to grind
in the MIAC or WIAC; and I've only seen the Tommies play football one time.
They did a good job...they lost the game and that made my day; but they did themselves proud in many ways.  It was a great day for the game.

So this mystery police officer once said...and I paraphrase:
"Well...the bad guys are shootin at me; I must be doin somthin right!"
"THE METTLE'S IN THE MEN!"

Thought I would check in with the board, as it has been a while.  I see we're still discussing beautiful women, beer, baseball, and hockey (or fishing)-- glad to see that my absence has not left the group lacking in any of those departments!

First off, congrats to OAS-- she's a keeper (to put up with you!).

Second, I just reviewed the Tommies' recruits.  Don't recognize a lot of the names but can speak to those in the Tri-Metro-- and while those kids are very good kids, I am not shaking in my boots while comparing those to SJU's list of incoming recruits.  It is tougher to recruit kids when you can't promise them playing time...

Third, I understand there was a multi-sport reason for a national search to the Johnnie soccer team's hiring of John Haws.  Nothing against John (who is a great guy and very good coach), but there was one good reason they looked nationally before they hired him.  I will let you all read between the lines on that.

Fourth, when I was at the Alumni Summit a few weeks ago, I heard a verified rumor about SJU's plan to install lights on the football field.  So, let me get this straight: we replace the grass with sprintturf; the ash track with the rubber stuff; the fieldstone border around the field with concrete; the wood bleachers with plastic and aluminum; the old white shed serving great carmel apples with a three-story suite of boxes serving pre-packaged brats; and the silence between plays with "Johnnie fans, if you turn to page 21 in your gameday program...."; and now we seek to change the ritual of Saturday afternoons to a Saturday evening main event?  Forget it.  I am out.  Way to systemically destroy what placed St. John's on the list of can't-miss places to watch a football game.  The school has milked that notion for all it was worth and now will have lost just about all its nostalgia that was a big draw to me.  We might as well put up big sandstone fence around the place too.  And yet, they can't find a way to stream video of the game with a three-story press box.

Finally, and above all, Tommies still suck.  ROR, I understand that this year's Tommy award winner (a good kid who was profiled in one of the local fishwraps a few months back about how he was the theater director at now-defunct St. Bernard's) made a statement in his graduation speech that, he always wanted to be a Johnnie, but UST gave him more money.  Always nice to know the Tommy award winners prefer SJU...

Good to see you drop in, Esq.

First - Double that.

Second - Good to hear.  We'll be getting better and they have reached their peak?

Third - So much for the cover, eh?

Fourth - To be fair, the Johnnies are a victim of their own success.  When averaging over 8k people a game, they must beef up the facilities to cope or else there will soon be far fewer than 8k a game.  The biggest issue is concessions and toilets even with the new building.  They probably want nothing less than to put a building in between the field and the trees, but something must be done to relieve pressure (so to speak).  It took me forever during the Tommie game to get over to the building from Fins' perch.  As to the lights, I think they came up around here in conversation before and I thought the word was that they were for Friday night high school games.  I may be wrong on that recollection.

And yes, Tommies suck.

Bad, bad idea.  Can't see the J's EVER playing a night game at home.  Unless, of course, ESPN dictates it to keep the game on TV.

I can verify that the Tommie award winner did in fact make that statement.  I believe only one person in the large crowd applauded that statement.  And yes, a very good kid.  My daughter, as well as her boyfriend, commented that he was a good guy.  I was quite impressed with his speech.  I've seen too many speeches in a situation like this where the kid comes off as sharing his/her far superior wisdom with not only his contemporaries but also us old farts in the audience.  He would have made a great Johnnie.  Obviously he's not perfect.

Oz,

Are you aware (according the the Star Tribune) that former Grand Rapids "Thunder" & Gopher basketball player Dusty Rychert plays ing the Australian professional basketball league along with Rick Rickert formerly of Duluth East and the Gophers.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

And yes, Tommies suck.

If they are for high school games, let's do the math:

MSHSL football has 8 regular season weeks.  In the St. Cloud metro area, the only teams without a field are Prep (who barely fields a team year in and out) and Cathedral-- as every other school has their own field.  Are we suggesting that a HS would want to give up a home game for the prestige of playing at St. John's?  Not likely.  Besides, my guess is Cathedral would rather play at SCSU or at Tech (where they had been playing) than have to travel all the way out to SJU for a game.

So that leaves playoffs alone.

Section games, until sometimes the finals, are played at the higher seed.  Again, think a St. Cloud area high school will want to give up the home field advantage come section times?  No way.

There is one state game per class not played at the Dome (or TCF, when that facility takes over).  So, essentially, we are talking about perhaps ONE TO TWO EVENING DATES PER YEAR that the field would be rented out?  Hardly a good reason to put up lights.  Even then, you still have to compete with SCSU's field too.

What I heard was that they were to be used for HS games (see my argument above), late afternoon practices and night games come NCAA playoff time.  While I see the need for lights at practice, the idea of hosting a night NCAA playoff game in late November is about as crazy as it comes.  Yeah, that will boost attendance.  And John figured out lighting before, methinks he will do it again...when we make a run in the NCAAs...

Yeah.  Last I checked, he was playing for one of the New Zealand teams and doing pretty well.  I don't follow the basketball, so I always miss when he comes to town.  I keep on saying I should go to one of his games and say hello afterwards but I always miss out.

As long as you don't cut down the trees to build parking ramps, you'll likely keep your spot among the "can't miss places to watch a football game".  I doubt the lights will be a deal-breaker for many people.  It can't be that long before they put in a big video board and fill it with ads, which might reduce the need for audible ads between plays.

Night games would also serve the hunters, craft-fair goers  :o, and people wanting to see multiple games a day.

Pat Coleman

All NCAA playoff games (aside from the Stagg Bowl) are noon local time kickoffs. The handbook says (or at least it has in the past) that deviations from that game time have to be approved by the NCAA committee, but no waivers have been granted in the dozen years I've been following the playoffs. The occasional game is started on a delayed basis because of weather but none has been scheduled to start at any other time.
