Pretty good article in the St. Cloud Times by Sports Editor Dave DeLand, even if it is in Johnnie Land its a great read...

Dear MIAC Posters,

Take a look at this and please vote for Pat. He is a heck of a midwestern kid and what we all love about D3 football. Thanks.

Stout's Patrick Mengelkoch Selected to 2010 All State Good Works Team
(only 22 Players selected from all Divisions in NCAA Football)

"Few awards in college football look beyond a player's statistics to recognize excellence and achievement in places where touchdowns and interceptions do not matter.  Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) announced the 22 student-athletes chosen for the 2010 Allstate AFCA Good Works TeamĀ®, one of the most prestigious off-the-field honors in college football."

Vote for Pat to be the team captain here!

I've seen this article before. Written a different way, but I've definitely seen it before. Unfortunately I have to agree with what some of the critics underneath the article have to say (though not as negatively). I look at it like this: To me there is nothing wrong with Division 1 football. I do however, think there something seriously wrong with lunatic alums forcing a guy out in the 2nd year of his contract because he didn't get a BCS bowl bid with some other coach's recruits, agents hanging around practice facilities and the temptations dangled in front of kids who came from nothing, that are frankly, too damn good to pass up.

I think people who are such insane rubes about any sports team that they fail to look at things objectively are some of the most notoriously annoying people on the planet. Whether they are USC, Iowa, Florida or even (yes) SJU fans, it's just time to get a flipping grip. Yes, show up on Saturday, cheer loud, tailgate, display your colors proudly during the week, but take a deep breath. College football is the hood ornament of your school usually, so it's obvious everyone loves a winner. That's why Don Roney is gone/"resigned" (which was 100% justified). But we all forget that despite the fact that these guys are 6'5" and ripped to shreds, they are just kids with a dream, people who hate on D1 forget that (as do people who love it); and people who hate on D3 are usually some 165lb frat douche wearing a Michigan wolverines hat backwards, that if thrown on a field with Bethel, SJU, UST, et al, would get absolutely destroyed.

If you're telling me tailgating on Saturday afternoon in South Bend, IN watching the Notre Dame bagpipers, and seeing those student-athletes walk from morning mass to the stadium together isn't "college football," just because they have a contract with NBC and an 80,000 seat stadium, I'd have to vehemently disagree. That being said, Saturday in Collegeville isn't any less special because it's D3, see (SI's 10 greatest college football venues).

Some programs do look at their kids like indentured servants, or property of the university, and that's sad. (Especially since the USC AD said Reggie Bush is no longer welcome on campus. Really? How much money did that KID make for your school and athletic program. He gave his Heisman back but did you give him any money for all the No. 5 jerseys you sold?) But a "vast majority" of these kids are amateurs that love the game, and are not kids going to "trade school" as some sort of stepping stone to the NFL.

We don't need to tear down D1 to prop up our brand of football. I just love college football at any level, because I know what it takes to make that committment. The haters do not.

If you can't ignore an insult, top it; if you can't top it, laugh it off; and if you can't laugh it off, it's probably deserved.

BDB, not a big fan of going to espn for anything, but I went and voted for Pat.  Best of luck to him.

Well said Bench. I second flashes ditto. Having been to Notre Dame for a game or two myself, as well as an Army/Navy classic, we shouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater because there are a few (maybe more than a few) transgressions. I like my DIII, but I still can be amazed and thrilled watching the "Big Timers" show their prowess. Sometimes we can think too much.

Damn, BDB, had I known I would have had to listen to Lou Holtz while voting, I might not have gone to that site. But he got my vote!

What's this world coming to when I have to give +K to a Tommie? Well put Bench.

What the heck, it's Friday, and after 3 days in a row in the chair, the dentist finished my root canal this morning. It's not just the vicodin talking, I love everybody. Really I do. +K

Has anyone had an Oz sighting lately?  He's the leader in the clubhouse but hasn't submitted his picks.  Unfortunately this wouldn't be the first time the leader didn't submit his picks as Tmerton was likely traveling last saturday and forgot to submit despite leading the pack.

Understanding the difficulty of finding a computer while traveling, I think we'd all be ok if he phoned in his picks to anyone who might happen to have his number here.

Bench,

Outstanding post!  I have to agree with you whole-heartedly.

Just cracked a Surly Fest (a first for me).  This stuff is tasty!!!  Took today off to fish, but couple the 10" of rain and 30 mph winds and I am stuck at home  :-[

Duff-guess it worked out ok for you.
I hear TDT is meeting with Obama to straighten out the economy-should be interesting.

Agree wholeheartedly Bench.

There are definitely the tools who disparage DIII, but we don't need to return the favor by pretending there is nothing good going on at any other level. I for one, will be thoroughly enjoying my weekend in Lincoln on Oct. 16.

Looks like Carleton took a page out of the Olaf manual in field preparation for the upcoming Carleton-St.John's game.
