Woo-eee!

I can't imagine a more exciting game to watch than yesterday's game in Collegeville.  It sucks to come out on the losing end, but that was just an all-out battle.  Both teams looked brilliant at times and still made some boneheaded mistakes.  I'm still not sure why Wartman is a good back--he's not very speedy and doesn't have sweet moves, but he sure can pick up yards!  SJU's punting game is downright embarrassing  >:(

All in all, UST did all they could to help SJU win it, but SJU fell just short.  Congrats to UST.  You earned that one, but barely.

Bench, great BSing with you and your two friends.  You guys are always welcome in Collegeville.

My guess is that he wasn't making the play call.  The guy is more of a figure head then anything now.  Look to the o coordinator is my guess if you want to know who decided to throw it.

Yes, but I've been given grief for calling The Elder Gagliardi a figurehead before.  Thought it better to assign the head coach responsibility for a call that late in the game.

Were the Johnnies in FG range at the 27?  Watching the kicker warm up and pummel extra points I thought 45 was very doable - and every yard on the ground, where the Johnnies had had success all day, would make it more of a reality.
Given a good snap, good hold and good protection yes, they would have had been in FG range at the 27 yd. line.
A lot of "fans in the stands" opinions  were to keep running in the middle gaining 4 or more yards in 3 plays & then kick, but hey we aren't coaches.
I also am under the impression the LS had some sort of injury to his thumb (he bounced a couple to the punter and a bad snap on the missed PAT in OT) and this may have had an impact on the decision.

I suppose in theory they were in field goal range. In theory. In theory, communism works (copyright, Homer Simpson).

In Division III, no matter who you have, I think it'd be too much of a stretch to try and settle for a 44-yard field goal when you have ample time to pick up more yardage. Hell, it'd be dumb to do that in the NFL, much less in D3. If he had to kick it in a last-second situation, okay. But you've just marched right down the field, Boyle has protected the ball very well this season, might as well try and pick up a few yards with a little pass.

And as we saw from both kickers, it's not like there is an automatic field goal in D3, not when even extra points are often far from automatic.

Just thinking out loud here......

If UST is the #4 team in the country, wouldn't that make SJU #5? If a team loses to a #4 team by 1, in OT, wouldn't they be almost as good? I know there are objective criteria that one could use; home field advantage, rivalry game, Homecoming etc, but objectively, unless another team loses in 2 or 3 Overtimes, a team that loses in one OT must be almost as good.

At any rate, it will be interesting to see what happens in the rankings.

Along that line of thinking, I would think that SJU should, right now, be the highest rated 2 loss team. What happens in the WIAC, IIAC and NWC will have a lot to do with SJU getting into the playofs, but just throwing this random idiocy (see above) out there.

That is interesting-but if I remember correctly-in selecting the teams, the NCAA puts all the Pool C teams on a "board" then selects the best teams. So, one could have 2 "North" region teams and a "South" region team slected. I don't think there is a "West" pool C team slot.
The interesting question is could you ever have a 2 loss team ranked ahead of a 1 loss team for slection purposes for at-large bid?

<< Today I was talking with a very credible source who is involved with fundraising over at UST and there is a very real concern of losing Caruso to the upcoming opening over at the U of M if the Tommies are able to have another deep run into the play-offs in 2010

This is pure crap, total BS, and just another SJU/UST mind fVck!  I while I have no double super secret sources, I have enough of a network within the U of MN to assure the is as sais pure crap and total BS.

Last year's selection process made it seem unlikely, although in the extreme (a team with two losses like St. John's vs. a UMAC team or maybe a MWC team with one loss) it could certainly happen.

It's obvious that sju needs to win out and have ust beat bu for any chance at the post season.  I noticed that uwec bet the pointers yesterday.  Maybe the blugolds have something this year.makes the johnnies loss to them not look so bad.  Good laugh for me yesterday when Finsleft and I had to tell UST students the names of their qb,) and wr's.
I don't know if either team palyed like the 4th or 5th best team in the country.  Toughe environment to keep composure in.  The D3 Nat Championship game won't even have that big of crowd...will it?

Congrats to UST. Tough game to listen to and for the OT I was relying on the good folks on the MIAC game update board. Special K+ for them!

Incredible crowd. That game alone drew more than all but 18 d3 schools drew ... all season.

<<I don't know if St. John's really considered itself in field goal range on the 27-yard line.>>

Field goal from the 27 was never an option -- too new, too low a kicking trajectory, too much pressure.

Duff,

Do you think Fasching was pulling his hair out when Dakata Tracy was running naked bootlegs at will?

I know I was.  Cripes.  It was like they had never seen a boot before.

I ran into your nephew yesterday.  Hadn't seen him in a while--it was good to briefly catch up!
