Is it time to start the debate on this page as to whether it is a good idea to schedule a difficult team for a non-conference game or go with the cupcake. If SJU schedules Crown instead of UW-EC, does SJU have only 1 loss and still in prime position for the playoffs?
If UST and UW-EC both finish the year ranked-does that give a 2 loss SJU team a leg up on many 1 loss teams?

You had to choose Crown, didn't you?   :-[

Everything depends upon the type of team you have. If it's a team that's growing and doesn't have it's identity yet (Carleton), it may be good to schedule a lesser opponent for a non-conference game (that worked out well). If it's a team like SJU, then I don't think they gain anything by stomping two very bad teams. Scheduling two average-good teams would be fine.

The problem is you likely don't know which team you have until after the schedule is set in stone.

SJU did schedule a cupcake in NW. I don't think two teams of NW-caliber on their schedule would not benefit SJU.

My opinion is to schedule 1 cream puff team and something with a little more beef (I wouldn't however schedule an "Ole 96er" or even an order of  "Lamb Fries")...that might be a bit too much to handle.

But seriously...a good team shouldn't take a chance on getting nicked with a loss by two non-conference teams.  If Maclester would still play football in the MIAC this wouldn't be much of an issue....unless of course a team scheduled another puff for the 1 non-conference game there used to be.

In two weeks, Carleton will be the home team at St. Olaf against the Oles.

+K for keeping us updated on the Knights. I certainly hope the school & the downtown businesses get back to "normal" A.S.A.P.- the heartache flood damage can cause is hard to describe unless you have been through it personally.  :-\

Which draws the bigger crowd at UST this weekend?

Cretin and Stillwater (it is CDH's homecoming) or

UST and Augsburg

The Auggie fans, many being local, may push it over the 1900 that UST got for their game with the Cobbers two weeks ago.

Regarding UST attendance, the line from Field of Dreams says it best, "if you build it, they will come." The build it part referring to sustained success. It has been a long time since there has been any level of excitement surrounding the football program there. My suspicion is that with some level of sustained success they will start to see their attendance numbers increase.

Out of curiosity, how does UST's attendance numbers compare to other MIAC institutions? I'd be curious to see them in comparison, particularly to the other schools in the Cities.

Bethel is #15 in the nation 2009- SJU is #1

IOW, Tommies are front-runners (at best).  They've had enough success since Caruso arrived to spark interest, yet the best they could do last year, when they lost only the game at SJU, was to finish middle of the pack (NCAA 2009 data).  This year is no better as the 1900 for the Concordia game shows.

SJU   8208
Concordia   4313
Bethel   3485
St. Olaf   2980
UST   2625
Gustavus   2278
Hamline   1638
Carleton   1261
Augsburg   1107

Something tells me UST's attendance numbers have been on the rise since Caruso's arrival. Can anyone confirm or deny?

sjusection105

I believe that UST has the largest number of undergrads. in the MIAC, and that is where their attendance increase should come from. Alumni numbers will come & go but UST should be able to get 4,000 per game with undergrads attendance.

This seems to fall into the "deny" category.  According to the NCAA, UST's 2007 2006 attendance was 2847/game, so in fact attendance has declined.  [Edit: Sorry - I was a year off - same conclusion though]

That is disappointing to hear. sjusection105, I agree that with the attendance size the game attendance should be much better. I can't speak much for how it is now, but I can say that during my time there (mid 90's) there was very little excitement around the football team.

USTBench

Their attendance is much higher than reported. That huge building next to the stadium is just a massive luxury box. Thought you guys knew.

A sign that you may have lost a big rivalry game last week:

You're taking solice in superior attendance numbers.  ::)

Nope, the rivalry game is Saturday at Arden Hills. Bethel has beaten SJU more than any team in the MIAC in the past decade-that's a rivalry. The last time (besides last weekend) that UST beat SJU, the players were in middle school---hardly a rivalry  8-)
