If you can't ignore an insult, top it; if you can't top it, laugh it off; and if you can't laugh it off, it's probably deserved.

Duff, you've got a lot of balls jumping into a frozen lake.

But I'm not sure they are going to still be there when you get out.  :o

It appears that just about everything at St. Cloud State is falling apart. Let's face it, if you can't get people to show up for homecoming, you can be assured that they won't show up for a "spirit/school pride day."

Does anyone else see the writing on the wall for the SCSU football program? I see the student activity fee hike as a short-term fix and that the program is ultimately doomed. As a Johnnie, I have mixed feelings about this. I am set to drift off into wild hypothetical musings about what this could mean for SJU football, the MIAC, and the distribution of collegiate football talent among Minnesota schools. Any thoughts?

Sam;

How much high quality football talent does SCSU draw anyway?  It will provide, I expect, a marginally larger pool for Saturday evening attendance.  Oops!  Did I say evening?  Silly me.  You can't play at night without lights.

I'm not talking great D2 talent. I'm talking about guys that can make a difference on a D3 squad. Kyle Gearman was an SCSU transfer and he was a guy that made a big difference on the offensive side of the ball when he came to SJU.

What do evening games and lights have to do with this topic?

I hope the polar plunge went well for Duffman and Team Shock and Thaw yesterday. The Bock Fest in New Ulm was great. My gal pal, who was there for her first time, had never been to anything like it before. She really enjoyed the different outfits people were wearing and the interaction between people. Thank goodness for the fire pits and sticking the hot pokers into the bock beer.

The only downside was having to stand in line for over an hour before we got in to the event. And it is always interesting to see a young woman being helped off the brewery grounds around noon for what appeared to being  intoxicated. :P

Off to Belle Plaine later this morning to be a judge to select a Blarney queen from a number of candidates for the St. Patrick's Day celebration in Belle Plaine next Saturday. Another fun event if you are looking for something to do next weekend.

The Polar Bear Plunge went well.  It wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be.  Ran into a few Johnnies at the event, too.

A tradition unrivaled...

The lights have no relevance at all.  I just tossed it out there to cause a stir.

I didn't realize that Gearman was a SCSU transfer.  I thought all our good transfers came from other schools.  Still, I can't remember SCSU having a decent team.  I would think most of their players were average guys taking advantage of the scholarships.  I always thought that SJU pulled the better players.

Speaking of, #13 said it was so much fun they jumped in TWICE!

That's what I figured. I'm the one who has led the hyperventilating over the new lights at Clemens. I just wanted to make sure you didn't know something I didn't.

SCSU seems to be a traditional middle of the pack team with flashes of success. This year they went 10-3 with two losses at the hands of eventual D2 national champ UM-Duluth. And, in the two seasons prior, the Huskies went 7-4

I would agree that our better transfer athletes in recent memory have come from schools other than SCSU, the most recent being Brayde Lipp from the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

Note 1.  A dearth of D2 schools doesn't seem to hurt those wisconsin schools too much.

Note 2.  Johnnie Red, what ever happened to that poor tommie girl in New Ulm?
Everyday is payday in paradise.

That's what I'm hoping someone would stumble upon, stanbob. My hypothesis is that in the absence of a D2 program nearby, D3 schools in the region will absorb a good portion of that talent. I don't think many kids plan on traveling real far just to play football unless they are getting a scholarship.

Stanbob, hopefully she is alright. As to whether she is a Tommie, I doubt it. She was too cute to get into St. Thomas. ;) I did run into a Tommie who was selling beer at the Bock Fest. I inquired that since I was Johnnie, could I get the beer free? He said it would be double the price for me.  :P
