Well this is too much fun.  I guess money isn't everything for the Tom's....especially when the last year's game versus the Cobbers only drew 1900 (two free game admissions, popcorn and beverage in this week's Highland Villager...click on picture below to enlarge.).  I guess when you know your rival will bring down about 5000 or more fans you can get away with charging $10.

But wait...there's more...as in a typo.  Look closely at the image and you'll see that the coupon is good for the Sept. 17th game versus the Cobbers however the Tom's are hosting the Oles that day.  Last year's Tommie / Ole game in Northfield drew 2700.  They should draw at least 2500 w/ the free tickets....(probably not).

I guess a free game, popcorn and soda is the least you can do for the neighborhood when you're trying to take it over.  That's where I come in...since I live in Highland I'm thinking about cleaning out the various Highland Villager news-stands around town (it's a free paper).  Anybody want to meet me outside O'Shaugnessy on September 17th and hand out some newspapers???

I think the Tom's need a new public relations guy.  :D

However, I know of no team at any level of football that has permanent home-team-only seats on the visitor's side, which is the issue here.

The only thing more ridiculous was the set-up at the old Auggie Tech field in which the teams shared a sideline  ;D

That was ridiculous. And a little tricky managing substitutions when your team was down on the other side of the field from your 1/2 of the sideline. It was just bizarre to share a sideline with your opponent. But it was funny during pregame watching the Auggie players try to intimidate you with stares and gestures and smack talk. It usually didn't happen much after the game got going though  ;D

In Germany, they would be facing prison time.

When I visited Germany a few years ago I saw monuments to German soliders in several cities.  I also met an old man who proudly showed me a picture of Adolph Hitler that he still carried in his wallet.  I'm not sure that they didn't look at them as young men who fought and died for their country rather than as a Nazi.  The Hitler picture thing was just creepy.

However, that said, I'd have to agree that wearing the uniform to the celebration was in poor taste.

Monuments to German soldiers are not necessarily monuments to Nazi's. There's a big difference. The SS were Nazi's, your average german infantry man probably was not. No problem with honor for the latter who fought bravely for a misguided cause. No honor for the former...

Eh...still think it's kind of jacked up. Like going to the South and seeing the locals "honoring" the Confederacy. It's just weird, particularly at the several predominantly black Robert E. Lee High Schools. Can't wrap my head around that one.

I'm not agreeing with the politics. But when you have 18 and 19 year old young men drafted into service to fight and die for your country, I think it is generally ok to honor their sacrifice, even if the politics and motivation behind the war were grossly misguided.

I'd see it as (somewhat) similar to someone dead set against the war on terror still thinking it was admirable to support our troops, versus the treatment many G.I's got during and after Vietnam. And no, I'm not comparing the war on terror to the politics of germany during WWII.

Hello Friends!  I decided it was time to come out of hiding and post this year.

I am looking forward to this season and I can't wait for it to begin.  Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend this week's game.  The good news is this means I am able to avoid spending time with TDT one additional Saturday.

Duff -  congrats on your upcoming new edition to the family.  While Bob is a good name don't forget that David is a great name.

Go Johnnies!!

* As for how many teams in the MIAC have permanent visitor seats behind the visitor bench, I know of two or three.  However, I know of no team at any level of football that has permanent home-team-only seats on the visitor's side, which is the issue here. -- Bethel, SJU, GAC, Concordia are the ones I can think of. That being said, I can think of plenty of DI programs that reserve the seats directly behind the visitors bench for season ticket holders. Arizona reserves the 10,000 seats (goal to goal) closest to the visitors sideline for its students! At places like Nebraska, to get season tickets you've got to donate to the school to get your name on the list, the more you give the better your chance/seats. Maybe you just need to give $30k to UST, then they'd probably let you sit there, even in your Johnnie gear  ;D ;)

* I am pleased to hear that there is a covered patio area underneath that you say can hold several hundred for standing room and that you say any Johnnie fan should be able to utilize if they arrive early.  Why do I think that won't actually be the case come Oct. 1? -- They did allow us to stand underneath for the West Region final last year. Which was really enjoyable as we got to witness firsthand that money can't buy you class. I was standing directly behind the Bethel D's bench and heard some incredibly inappropriate things said to the Bethel players and coaches throughout the entire game. Stuff that has no business being said in public or in the presence of women. Nothing like 50 year old men heckling 19 and 20 year old players and female trainers/managers. But I suppose when you can sit in the reserved seats and are protected by campus security who won't allow anyone up there to confront your ignorance, anything goes   ::)

* What would I have changed in this arrangement to satisfy the "few dozen Johnny fans who are bent out of shape"?  Aside from not building it in the first place, how about letting it be a seating area for the Johnnie fans, or for all visiting teams in fact?  When Notre Dame plays USC at the Coliseum in Los Angeles, ND brings so many fans that SC moves the seats of many of its season ticket holders for that game alone and opens up some of the good seating for ND.  You're as magnanimous and fair-minded as the Trojans, aren't you? -- Personally, I think we should simply return the favor. Rule that the 'visitor's' side bleachers are reserved for the SJU/CSB and BU student body only during games when UST comes to visit. I wonder how long it would take before Caruso started speaking up about the injustice of the situation.  8-)

The only danger at Nebraska is that the home fans would pay too many compliments to the visiting team.

I understand that schools can station fans behind a visiting team's bench, but in a large d-1 stadium that's not really the same thing.  At UST, as you know, the ONLY seats behind the visiting bench are reserved for UST.  And your observation about your experience of the arrangement last year in the playoffs is about what I would expect; it will only be magnified against SJU.  People don't say "Tommies suck" for nothing.

The wife and I saw a dude decked out in Auggie Tech football gear at Coldstone in Maple Grove last night.  After wondering why someone would advertise that they're an Auggie player ( ;D ), I remembered that that must mean it's football time!

For the most part I can deal with the SJU love fest on here because it's obvious the fan/alum base is second-to-none at the DIII level. I can acknowledge that. I've also met some great acquaintances from SJU that have the ability to talk about the game objectively, root for their team, give a little good natured ribbing, receive a little good natured ribbing, and look at the UST/SJU rivalry for what it is: a football game between predominantly privileged white kids from Minnesota with moderate athletic talent. There's no larger social concept to it, unless you want to play up the rich small town kids v. rich suburb/big town kids angle, but that's ridiculous.

Where I get exhausted is when it turns into incessant b****ing about EVERY LITTLE THING. Visitor accomodations, locker rooms, forking over an extra $3, messing with the field to thwart the blazing speed of the Johnnies (STO), as if it is a cardinal sin or "classless" for any other team in the MIAC to try to obtain some sort of competitive/finanicial/recruiting advantage against MIAC football immortality. Gags/Natural Bowl/Countless MIAC titles/NCAA titles, etc. are giant advantages that are tough for any team to compete with. Steve Johnson, Glenn Caruso, Chris Meidt, Terry Horan have had their moments when they were able to level the playing field a little bit with SJU. Maybe it's only temporary, but it's actually a GOOD thing when other teams can challenge for a conference championship or a playoff spot. I mean, how pointless is Mt. Union's conference season at this point?
